Be kind to dentists, they have fillings too
The office at ABC pediatric dentistry is bright, colorful, and has a very open concept. It is a place designed for children. The first thing patients notice when they walk in are the building blocks and toys. They can also see the giant glass windows that allow them to look into the north cleaning bay. The purpose of this is to lead by example. They can see other children getting their teeth cleaned, so they feel more comfortable letting us clean their teeth. Each colored chair has a TV placed above it and the children get to choose from one of four different Disney movies for the day. Our main job is to use behavior management techniques to help children feel comfortable while getting their teeth cleaned. This will create positive memories and make future cleanings and procedures easier

Hybrid Manufacturing: Integrating Direct Write and Stereolithography
A commercial stereolithography (SL) machine was modified to integrate fluid dispensing or
direct-write (DW) technology with SL in an integrated manufacturing environment for
automated and efficient hybrid manufacturing of complex electrical devices, combining threedimensional (3D) electrical circuitry with SL-manufactured parts. The modified SL system
operates similarly to a commercially available machine, although build interrupts were used to
stop and start the SL build while depositing fluid using the DW system. An additional linear
encoder was attached to the SL platform z-stage and used to maintain accurate part registration
during the SL and DW build processes. Individual STL files were required as part of the
manufacturing process plan. The DW system employed a three-axis translation mechanism that
was integrated with the commercial SL machine. Registration between the SL part, SL laser and
the DW nozzle was maintained through the use of 0.025-inch diameter cylindrical reference
holes manufactured in the part during SL. After depositing conductive ink using DW, the SL
laser was commanded to trace the profile until the ink was cured. The current system allows for
easy exchange between SL and DW in order to manufacture fully functional 3D electrical
circuits and structures in a semi-automated environment. To demonstrate the manufacturing
capabilities, the hybrid SL/DW setup was used to make a simple multi-layer SL part with
embedded circuitry. This hybrid system is not intended to function as a commercial system, it is
intended for experimental demonstration only. This hybrid SL/DW system has the potential for
manufacturing fully functional electromechanical devices that are more compact, less expensive,
and more reliable than their conventional predecessors, and work is ongoing in order to fully

Murder She Wrote: Death and Drama in Nesting Woodpeckers
Woodpeckers serve a vital role as a keystone species in their respective biome by excavating nesting cavities that are in turn used by numerous forest birds and animals. These secondary cavity nesters rely heavily on the success of primary nesters in order to ensure their own reproductive success. Unfortunately numerous woodpeckers, such as the Black-backed (Picoides arcticus) and White-headed Woodpeckers (Picoides albolarvatus), have seen a large decline in numbers and are now considered a threatened species. Inability for these woodpeckers to reproduce creates a top-down trophic cascade in their biome. In an effort to better understand how nesting success is impacted by the behaviors of woodpeckers, predators, and secondary cavity nesters at the nest, sixty-five different nests were filmed for over 15,000 hours in the Eastern Washington Cascades during the 2015 and 2016 breeding seasons. We have watched and scored close to 400 hours of footage and have documented aggressive takeover by secondary cavity nesters, predation of nest chicks, and even human disturbance of nests. By better understanding the ecological pressures woodpeckers face and identifying what factors contribute to successful nesting, proper measures can be taken to maintain healthy levels of woodpecker populations

Self-Debiasing Large Language Models: Zero-Shot Recognition and Reduction of Stereotypes
Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable advances in language
generation and understanding but are also prone to exhibiting harmful social
biases. While recognition of these behaviors has generated an abundance of bias
mitigation techniques, most require modifications to the training data, model
parameters, or decoding strategy, which may be infeasible without access to a
trainable model. In this work, we leverage the zero-shot capabilities of LLMs
to reduce stereotyping in a technique we introduce as zero-shot self-debiasing.
With two approaches, self-debiasing via explanation and self-debiasing via
reprompting, we show that self-debiasing can significantly reduce the degree of
stereotyping across nine different social groups while relying only on the LLM
itself and a simple prompt, with explanations correctly identifying invalid
assumptions and reprompting delivering the greatest reductions in bias. We hope
this work opens inquiry into other zero-shot techniques for bias mitigation
Bias and Fairness in Large Language Models: A Survey
Rapid advancements of large language models (LLMs) have enabled the
processing, understanding, and generation of human-like text, with increasing
integration into systems that touch our social sphere. Despite this success,
these models can learn, perpetuate, and amplify harmful social biases. In this
paper, we present a comprehensive survey of bias evaluation and mitigation
techniques for LLMs. We first consolidate, formalize, and expand notions of
social bias and fairness in natural language processing, defining distinct
facets of harm and introducing several desiderata to operationalize fairness
for LLMs. We then unify the literature by proposing three intuitive taxonomies,
two for bias evaluation, namely metrics and datasets, and one for mitigation.
Our first taxonomy of metrics for bias evaluation disambiguates the
relationship between metrics and evaluation datasets, and organizes metrics by
the different levels at which they operate in a model: embeddings,
probabilities, and generated text. Our second taxonomy of datasets for bias
evaluation categorizes datasets by their structure as counterfactual inputs or
prompts, and identifies the targeted harms and social groups; we also release a
consolidation of publicly-available datasets for improved access. Our third
taxonomy of techniques for bias mitigation classifies methods by their
intervention during pre-processing, in-training, intra-processing, and
post-processing, with granular subcategories that elucidate research trends.
Finally, we identify open problems and challenges for future work. Synthesizing
a wide range of recent research, we aim to provide a clear guide of the
existing literature that empowers researchers and practitioners to better
understand and prevent the propagation of bias in LLMs
Elevated serum matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) concentration predicts the presence of colorectal neoplasia in symptomatic patients
Early detection of polyps or colorectal carcinoma can reduce colorectal carcinoma-associated deaths. Previous studies have demonstrated raised serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (sMMP-9) in a range of cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of sMMP-9 levels in identifying colorectal neoplasia. Consenting patients donated a blood sample and were assessed by proforma-led history and physical examination. Samples were analysed for sMMP-9 concentration (enzyme-linked immuno-sorbant assay) and compared to final diagnoses. Logistic regression modelling determined independent factors associated with neoplasia. A total of 365 patients were recruited of whom 300 were analysed, including 46 normal controls. A total of 27 significant adenomas and 63 malignancies were identified. The median sMMP-9 concentration was 443ng ml−1 (IQR: 219–782; mean: 546). Patients with neoplasia had significantly elevated sMMP-9 levels (P<0.001). Logistic regression modelling identified elevated log(sMMP-9) as the most significant predictor of neoplasia (χ2=38.33, P<0.001). Other significant factors were age, sex, smoking history, abdominal pain and weight loss. The model accurately predicted neoplasia in 77.3% of cases. Sensitivity and specificity were 77.9 and 77.1%. sMMP-9 estimation can accurately stratify patient to low- or high-risk cohorts. Stirring the motivational soup: Within-person latent profiles of motivation in exercise
Background: The purpose of the present study was to use a person-oriented analytical approach to identify latent motivational profiles, based on the different behavioural regulations for exercise, and to examine differences in satisfaction of basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy and relatedness) and exercise behaviour across these motivational profiles. Methods: Two samples, consisting of 1084 and 511 adults respectively, completed exercise-related measures of behavioural regulation and psychological need satisfaction as well as exercise behaviour. Latent profile analyses were used to identify motivational profiles. Results: Six profiles, representing different combinations of regulations for exercise, were found to best represent data in both samples. Some profiles were found in both samples (e.g., low motivation profile, self-determined motivation profile and self-determined with high introjected regulation profile), whereas others were unique to each sample. In line with the Self-Determination Theory, individuals belonging to more self-determined profiles demonstrated higher scores on need satisfaction. Conclusions: The results support the notions of motivation being a multidimensional construct and that people have different, sometimes competing, reasons for engaging in exercise. The benefits of using person-oriented analyses to examine within-person interactions of motivation and different regulations are discussed. © 2017 The Author(s)
