    Model Checking Linear Logic Specifications

The overall goal of this paper is to investigate the theoretical foundations of algorithmic verification techniques for first order linear logic specifications. The fragment of linear logic we consider in this paper is based on the linear logic programming language called LO enriched with universally quantified goal formulas. Although LO was originally introduced as a theoretical foundation for extensions of logic programming languages, it can also be viewed as a very general language to specify a wide range of infinite-state concurrent systems. Our approach is based on the relation between backward reachability and provability highlighted in our previous work on propositional LO programs. Following this line of research, we define here a general framework for the bottom-up evaluation of first order linear logic specifications. The evaluation procedure is based on an effective fixpoint operator working on a symbolic representation of infinite collections of first order linear logic formulas. The theory of well quasi-orderings can be used to provide sufficient conditions for the termination of the evaluation of non trivial fragments of first order linear logic.Comment: 53 pages, 12 figures "Under consideration for publication in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming

Women, medieval commerce, and the education gender gap

We investigate the historical determinants of the education gender gap in Italy in the late nineteenth century, immediately following the country’s Unification. We use a comprehensive newly-assembled database including 69 provinces over twenty-year sub-samples covering the 1861- 1901 period. We find robust evidence that female primary school attainment, relative to that of males, is positively associated with the medieval pattern of commerce, along the routes that connected Italian cities among themselves and with the rest of the world. The effect of medieval commerce is particularly strong at the non-compulsory upperprimary level and persists even after controlling for alternative long-term determinants reflecting the geographic, economic, political, and cultural differentiation of medieval Italy. The long-term influence of medieval commerce quickly dissipates after national compulsory primary schooling is imposed at Unification, suggesting that the channel of transmission was the larger provision of education for girls in commercial centers

Origins and implications of family structure across Italian provinces in historical perspective

    Get PDF
In this study we review the literature on the origins and implications of family structure in historical perspective with a focus on Italian provinces. Furthermore we present newlycollected data on three of the main features of family structure: female mean age at marriage, the female celibacy rate, and the fraction of illegitimate births. The data are collected at the provincial level for 1871, the year of Italy's political unification. The analysis of the data allows us to confirm and quantify the geographic differentiation in family patterns across the country. We also illustrate the links between family structure and a set of socio-economic outcomes, in the short, medium, and long run

Modeling and simulation of an emulsion copolymerization process

    Get PDF
Radical emulsion copolymerization is one of the most widely diffused processes aimed to produce paints easy to use because of their low viscosity. At industrial scale, such processes require a high control level of all the operating variables. Particularly, the repeatability of an emulsion polymerization process within narrow limits is one of the most desirable features because it allows for controlling also other important product qualities as final solids content, average particle size, latex viscosity and polymer average molecular weight. Other important full plant requirements are the minimization of reactants dosing times and the preparation of a latex at the highest possible concentration. In this work, the first step of a complex industrial copolymerization process has been considered. Since different monomer types (butyl acrylate, styrene, acrylic acid and acrylamide) are involved, it has been necessary to propose a complete set of rate constants for all the traditional steps of the radical emulsion reactions chain (i.e. initiation, propagation, radicals termination, backbiting and long-chain branching, micelles seeding, etc..). These parameters have then been inserted into a system of ordinary differential equations expressing all balances and control actions aimed to simulate the full plant synthesis. Finally, the proposed model has been experimentally validated through the comparison with a reaction calorimetry test carried out in an indirectly cooled semibatch reactor (RC1, 1L, Mettler Toledo). Obtained results have confirmed the reliability of the theoretical model

Reliability assessment of open-source multiscale landslide susceptibility maps and effects of their fusion

    Get PDF
Several landslide susceptibility (LS) maps at various scales of analysis have been performed with specific zoning purposes and techniques. Supervised machine learning algorithms (ML) have become one of the most diffused techniques for landslide prediction, whose reliability is firmly based on the quality of input data. Site-specific landslide inventories are often more accurate and complete than national or worldwide databases. For these reasons, detailed landslide inventory and predisposing variables must be collected to derive reliable LS products. However, high-quality data are often rare, and risk managers must consider lower-resolution available products with no more than informative purposes. In this work, we compared different ML models to select the most accurate for large-scale LS assessment within the Municipality of Rome. The ExtraTreesClassifier outperformed the others reaching an average F1-score of 0.896. Thereafter, we addressed the reliability of open-source LS maps at different scales of analysis (global to regional) by means of statistical and spatial analysis. The obtained results shed light on the difference in hazard zoning depending on the scale and mapping unit. An approach for low-resolution LS data fusion was attempted, assessing the importance of the adopted criteria, which increased the ability to detect occurred landslides while maintaining precision

    Self-sustainable bio-methanol & bio-char coproduction from 2nd generation biomass gasification

Methanol is an important intermediate in the synthesis of different chemicals. It is mainly produced by reforming of natural gas in centralized facilities with productive capacities on the order of 109 tons per day. Production of methanol from biomass suffers from the cost and logistics of the transportation of biomass and it has not yet maturated into commercial scale. The techno-economic feasibility of the co-production of bio-methanol and bio-char is assessed through detailed computer simulations using process simulator Aspen HYSYS® together with the gasification simulator GASDS. This work further elaborates the previous results on the bio-methanol production process, presenting particularities and updates on previously reported values. The production model is seen to be valid, with payback times that go from 3 to 6 years according to the capacity of the plant (100 to 1000 kt of biomass per year). Self-sustainability is possible but a 50/50 mix of producing and buying electricity yields the most economic choice. © Copyright 2017, AIDIC Servizi S.r.l

Analysis of a possible application of a new process for oxygen enriched air production

A new process for oxygen enriched air (EA) production has been applied to Claus Process. This process is simple and requires few process units. Matlab and Aspen Hysys have been used for simulations and system sizing. The results demonstrate that it could be an alternative to traditional EA processes from an economical point of view
