The Use of Leasing in Financially Constrained Firms: An Analysis for European SMEs

Severe informational asymmetries, small size, unreliable financial statements and lack of collateral hamper the access of SMEs to traditional sources of debt financing. We use a survey data set of 4,583 SMEs from 25 European countries to analyse whether the use of leasing as a form of financing could fill the financing gap of constrained SMEs. We do so analysing whether the use of leasing by SMEs is triggered by the existence of financial constraints. Our findings indicate that after controlling for firm, bank and country-specific characteristics the likelihood of using leasing increases for financially constrained SMEs, which confirms our hypothesis. This paper contributes to the debate about differences in the use of lease financing between constrained and unconstrained SMEs, providing to the best of our knowledge, the first international evidence using a survey assessment of self-declared financial constraints for SMEs.The authors acknowledge financial support by Santander Financial Institute and Fundación UCEIF

Weak protection of the rights of financiers intensifies agency problems in SME financing, inhibiting the optimal provision of credit necessary to grow and innovate. We use a survey data set of 4,348 SMEs from 25 European countries to analyze whether the use of factoring as a form of SME financing is less dependent on low quality of laws and institutions. We do so analyzing whether the use of factoring by SMEs differs across countries due to differences in the legal protection of creditors. Our findings indicate that firms operating in countries with legal environments that weakly protect the rights of creditors, with political instability or high enforcement costs, are more likely to use factoring. Managers of riskier and opaque companies operating in such inefficient environments can use the results of this study to better understand that there are suitable options to complement bank financing. Managers who seek loans can use the results to diversify their financing structure through the use of factoring. Since factoring can be used as a complement to bank loans or as a substitute for bank financing, it is important that policy makers take our results into account when revising policies concerning access to external financing.Ginés Hernández-Cánovas acknowledges financial support by Fundación Séneca (Project 15403/PHCS/10), and by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Project ECO2011-29080)

In this paper, we present a study on the instruction offered in a professionalization program for math teachers from the online and distance programs of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico. The study is based on Wenger’s (1998, 2010) theory of communities of practice (CoP), and particularly on the concepts of competence and experience. We analyze the teachers’ interactions during their participation in a learning unit on the didactic resources of and for math teachers. The analysis focuses on the interaction between the teachers’ experience and the competence promoted by educators in order to align that experience. We conclude that the alignment between the teachers’ experience and the competence that they represent is essential to promote equity in teachers’ learning. Abstract: This paper details the full design, implementation, and validation of an e-health service in order to improve the community health care services for patients with cognitive disorders. Specifically, the new service allows Parkinson’s disease patients benefit from the possibility of doing cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) at home by using a familiar device such as a TV set. Its use instead of a PC could be a major advantage for some patients whose lack of familiarity with the use of a PC means that they can do therapy only in the presence of a therapist. For these patients this solution could bring about a great improvement in their autonomy. At the same time, this service provides therapists with the ability to conduct follow-up of therapy sessions via the web, benefiting from greater and easier control of the therapy exercises performed by patients and allowing them to customize new exercises in accordance with the particular needs of each patient. As a result, this kind of CST is considered to be a complement of other therapies oriented to the Parkinson patients. Furthermore, with small changes, the system could be useful for patients with a different cognitive disease such as Alzheimer’s or mild cognitive impairment

Papilomatosis bovina: epidemiología y diversidad de papilomavirus bovinos (BPV)

Bovine papillomatosis is a cattle disease characterized by the presence of papillomas and fibropapillomas. It is caused by the infection of bovine papillomavirus (BPV), naked viruses of the family Papillomaviridae. They are epithelitropic viruses, although they have also been detected in blood, milk, urine and seminal fluid. They present high viral diversity, and up to date 13 types are recognized (BPV-1 a BPV-13). Although they were originally described in cattle, some genotypes (BPV-1 and BPV-2) have been associated with the development of papillomas in buffaloes, zebras, giraffes and yaks. Some genotypes also have been associated with the development of tumors in the gastrointestinal tract and in the urinary bladder in cattle, and with equine sarcoids. BPV infection has been described in different areas of the world, although not all genotypes have the same prevalence. Recent studies show a high incidence of multiple infections.

Social and cognitive determinants in entrepreneurial interest: an exploratory study among argentine students

    Get PDF
In this paper we analyze the intentions in creating a business on the part of a group of Argentine students in Strategic Human Resources Management in the University of Buenos Aires. The results of the study show that these students want to create their own business, but their possibilities depend on several factors. Among all of them, self-efficacy stands out; those students who show more self-efficacy are those who demonstrate more intention for creating a business. This intention is minor for the students who possess more social support. Neither family charges nor previous experience in entrepreneurship have a significant effect.Entrepreneruship, cognitive factors, social factors.

This paper analyzes the human resources management in a familiar and entrepreneurial company, REDUR. Specifically, it is analyzed the characteristics and the main problems of the human resources area along the company’s cycle of life. Nowadays, REDUR is in the growth stage. The work shows that the human resources management goes becoming more formal and that formation and selection are the most important practices. Exactly, in which refers to these practices, they use graphology, as technique to select personal, and they consider especially important the socialization. The reason can be that businesses in growth emphasize person-organization fit.Familiar businesses, entrepreneurship, human resource management and cycle of life.

From Cu(i) and Cu(i)–Cu(ii) mixed-valence clusters to 2D Cu(ii) and Cu(i) coordination polymers supported by a flexible bis-tetrazole organosulfur ligand

Three coordination compounds from the reaction of copper(II) bromide with the flexible bis-tetrazole organosulfur ligand, 1,2-bis(1-methyl-1H-tetrazole-5-ylthio)ethane (bmtte) have been isolated and characterised. The identification of polymeric 2Cu2Br4 (bmtte) (1), trinuclear [Cu3Br4(bmtte)2] (2) and tetra-nuclear [Cu2Br2(bmtte)]2 (3) compounds shows that the reaction conditions have a significant influence on the structure of the complexes formed. Moreover, two polymorphs of the 2D Cu(II )-coordination polymer 1 have been isolated and these crystallise in the monoclinic C2/m (1m) and the triclinic P1¯ (1t) space groups. The thermal stabilities and behaviour in aqueous media of compounds 1–3 were investigated along with the reactivity of compound 2 with CuBr2 and KI. The solid-state reaction between mixed-valence compound 2 with KI or the direct reaction of CuI and bmtte under microwave irradiation allowed the preparation of the polymeric 2 1Cu4 I4 (bmtte)2 (4). The redox behaviour of complexes 2 and 3 was analysed by cyclic voltammetry.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. PID2019-110218RB-I00Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref.
