Objective: Impairment of continuity of the sleep due to arousals and stage changes commonly experienced by the patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cause sleep problems associated with insomnia or hypersomnia. These resultant sleep problems lead to impaired quality of life in the patients with COPD. The aim of this study was to evaluate complaints related to sleep-alertness in the patients with COPD in the setting in which subjective sleep tests and polysomnography investigation using scales of quality of life are unavailable. Materials and Methods: The present study included 70 patients with COPD (33 were men and 37 were women). First, the patients with symptoms of COPD were evaluated clinically and COPD was staged based on degree of restriction of airflow (GOLD 2011). Sleep-alertness situation of all patients was evaluated using Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Pittsburgh Scale of Seep Quality (PSSQ). Results: No statistically significant relationship was observed between stage of COPD and results of subjective sleep tests. Conclusion: Although these results indicate that stage of disease does not impact sleepiness and quality of sleep in the patients with COPD, they support the fact that presence of COPD alone negatively affected quality of sleep

Introduction. Awareness of the healthcare providers on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in our country and all over the world, and on pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) which plays an important role in its nonpharmacological treatment will provide effectiveness in diagnosis and treatment of COPD. The present study aimed at determining knowledge level of the healthcare providers about COPD and PR. Materials and Methods. In this cross-sectional study, family practitioners and staff of home-care in central county of Manisa City were applied a questionnaire in order to determine their knowledge level on COPD and pulmonary rehabilitation during the in-service training on “pulmonary rehabilitation, home-care services for the pulmonary diseases, and respiratory exercises.” Results. 65.5% of the healthcare providers responded to the survey. Rate of those correctly knowing at least one of four items was 97.2%. No responder knew all items correctly. Average value for correct answers was 5.30 ± 2.1 (range: 1–10). The physicians, men, and those working in family health centers had higher level of knowledge on COPD compared to nonphysician healthcare providers (p=0.006), women (p=0.002), and those working in other practices (p=0.019), respectively. Conclusion. Knowledge level of the primary healthcare providers on COPD and PR remains inadequate. Dynamic postgraduate training on this topic will be useful in referring the patients to centers giving service for this condition

Thirty-three patients from Chest Department of Celal Bayar University Hospital have been included into this study which takes, quality of life in lung cancer patients, which is a very crucial problem in nowadays, under its scope. All patients are evaluated from the views of sex, age, tobacco consumption, complaints at the time of hospital admittance, cancer cell type, cancer stage, method of diagnosis, treatment modality and its side effects, and response to treatment. Quality of life is measured by Short Form-36 and Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale. It is concluded that weight loss and pain, which are the main complaints at time of admittance and progressing disease despite the anticancer treatment influenced the quality of life (p= 0.02, p= 0.01 respectively). The effect of tumour stage, cancer type and treatment modality have not been noted. We concluded that various factors may effect the quality of life in lung cancer patients but these factors must be subjected to further studies

Objective: In this study we aimed to evaluate asthma prevalence, smoking status and the effect of probable risk factors in first and second class students of Celal Bayar University Medical Faculty, Manisa School of Health and Vocational School of Health Service. Material and Method: A questionnaire was prepared based on the ECHRS questionnaire and performed by face to face query. Data were analyzed as current asthma, cumulative asthma and asthma related symptoms prevalence. Results: Of the 392 students 144 (36.8%) were male and the mean age was 19.3±1.57. Current asthma, cumulative asthma and asthma related symptom prevalences were 0.5, 2.0, 6.7% respectively and the current smoking status was 16.1%. Current smoking rates were statistically higher in males (p=0.001) and lower in medical students. Allergic rhinitis, dermatitis and familial atopy frequencies were 20.2, 46 and 28.6% respectively. Family history of asthma, presence of asthma in mother and presence of allergic rhinitis affected the prevalence of asthma related symptoms, while the residence of the students and gender did not effect this prevalence. Smoking history of at least one cigarette a day for 6 months or more was significantly affecting the feeling of wheezing and whistling in the chest. Conclusion: The results showed that, the current asthma prevalence in the university students of our city was similar to the asthma prevalence of university students of the same age in previous studies
