Exploring how nurses assess, monitor and manage acute pain for adult critically ill patients in the emergency department: Protocol for a mixed methods study
© 2017 The Author(s). Background: Many critically ill patients experience moderate to severe acute pain that is frequently undetected and/or undertreated. Acute pain in this patient cohort not only derives from their injury and/or illness, but also as a consequence of delivering care whilst stabilising the patient. Emergency nurses are increasingly responsible for the safety and wellbeing of critically ill patients, which includes assessing, monitoring and managing acute pain. How emergency nurses manage acute pain in critically ill adult patients is unknown. The objective of this study is to explore how emergency nurses manage acute pain in critically ill patients in the Emergency Department. Methods: In this paper, we provide a detailed description of the methods and protocol for a multiphase sequential mixed methods study, exploring how emergency nurses assess, monitor and manage acute pain in critically ill adult patients. The objective, method, data collection and analysis of each phase are explained. Justification of each method and data integration is described. Discussion: Synthesis of findings will generate a comprehensive picture of how emergency nurses' perceive and manage acute pain in critically ill adult patients. The results of this study will form a knowledge base to expand theory and inform research and practice

Failure of the Standard Coupled-Channels Method in Describing the Inelastic Reaction Data: On the Use of a New Shape for the Coupling Potential
We present the failure of the standard coupled-channels method in explaining
the inelastic scattering together with other observables such as elastic
scattering, excitation function and fusion data. We use both microscopic
double-folding and phenomenological deep potentials with shallow imaginary
components. We argue that the solution of the problems for the inelastic
scattering data is not related to the central nuclear potential, but to the
coupling potential between excited states. We present that these problems can
be addressed in a systematic way by using a different shape for the coupling

Growth Responses of Zoysia spp. under Tree Shade in the Midwestern United States
‘Meyer’ zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steudel) is commonly planted on home lawns and golf courses in the transition zone; however, poor shade tolerance limits its widespread use. This study was conducted to determine changes and differences in growth among selected Zoysia cultivars and progeny under a natural shade environment over a 3-year period in the transition zone. The study was initiated in June 2010 at the Rocky Ford Turfgrass Research Center in Manhattan, KS. Soil type was a Chase silt loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic, Aquic, Argiudoll). Zoysia genotypes were sodded in 0.37-m2 plots and arranged in a randomized complete block with five replications under silver maple (Acer saccharinum L.) shade that resulted in a 91% reduction in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Genotypes included ‘Zorro’ [Z. matrella (L.) Merrill], ‘Emerald’ [Z. japonica × Z. pacifica (Goudswaard) Hotta & Kuroki], ‘Meyer’, Chinese Common (Z. japonica), and experimental progeny Exp1 (Z. matrella × Z. japonica), and Exp2 and Exp3 [(Z. japonica × Z. pacifica) × Z. japonica]. ‘Zorro’ and ‘Emerald’ experienced winter injury, which negatively affected their performance. Tiller numbers decreased 47% in ‘Meyer’ from June 2010 to June 2012, but declines in [(Z. japonica × Z. pacifica) × Z. japonica] progeny were only 1% for Exp2 and 27% for Exp3, and both Exp2 and Exp3 maintained high percent green cover throughout the study. In general, by the third year of evaluation, progeny of [(Z. japonica × Z. pacifica) × Z. japonica] had higher quality ratings and higher tiller numbers than ‘Meyer’ and may provide more shade-tolerant cultivar choices for transition zone turf managers
Development of measurement techniques for studying propeller erosion damage in severe wake fields
Preliminary propeller erosion tests have been conducted at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division 24 inch variable pressure water tunnel (VPWT), shown in Figure 1, to establish testing procedures for evaluating various coatings to minimize cavitation erosion damage to marine propellers. A severe wake field was produced using a two dimensional, thick foil ahead of a downstream driven propeller model. This approach was derived from similar tests conducted by Miller [11]. Conventional cavitation viewing was performed with cameras viewing through the tunnel side window. Images were acquired using high speed (up to 6000 fps) and high resolution (2K x 2K) cameras. In addition, a waterproof camera was mounted inside the foil looking directly downstream at the suction face of the blade. Two propellers were tested, a 16 inch (0.406 m) diameter propeller 5388 and a 12 inch (0.305 m) diameter propeller 4119 [8]. The foil wake field was measured with LDV surveys. Accelerometers were mounted in the water tunnel test section to measure acoustic emissions of cavitation activity. Cavitation erosion was observed at the tip of the 16 inch diameter propeller due to excessive tip vortex, and complicated vortex collapse. Moderate erosion was also observed at the inner radii, where leading edge sheet cavitation collapsed. Scanning techniques for quantifying propeller erosion damage were evaluated. These studies will transition to the 36-inch VPWT where a number of geosym propellers of different materials and coating will be assessed in a similar wake field.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/84210/1/CAV2009-final156.pd
Leptogenesis with Dirac Neutrinos
We describe a "neutrinogenesis" mechanism whereby, in the presence of
right-handed neutrinos with sufficiently small pure Dirac masses,
(B+L)-violating sphaleron processes create the baryon asymmetry of the
Universe, even when B=L=0 initially. It is shown that the resulting neutrino
mass constraints are easily fulfilled by the neutrino masses suggested by
current experiments. We present a simple toy model which uses this mechanism to
produce the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. (PostScript Errors

Absence of correlation between built-in electric dipole moment and quantum Stark effect in InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots
We report significant deviations from the usual quadratic dependence of the
ground state interband transition energy on applied electric fields in
InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots. In particular, we show that conventional
second-order perturbation theory fails to correctly describe the Stark shift
for electric field below kV/cm in high dots. Eight-band calculations demonstrate this effect is predominantly due to
the three-dimensional strain field distribution which for various dot shapes
and stoichiometric compositions drastically affects the hole ground state. Our
conclusions are supported by two independent experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Mass zeros in the one-loop effective actions of QED in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions
It is known that the one-loop effective action of is a quadratic in
the field strength when the fermion mass is zero: all potential higher order
contributions beyond second order vanish. For nonzero fermion mass it is shown
that this behavior persists for a general class of fields for at least one
value of the fermion mass when the external field's flux satisfies
. For the mass-shell renormalized one-loop effective
action vanishes for at least one value of the fermion mass for a class of
smooth, square integrable background gauge fields provided a plausible

Fermionic Determinant of the Massive Schwinger Model
A representation for the fermionic determinant of the massive Schwinger
model, or , is obtained that makes a clean separation between the
Schwinger model and its massive counterpart. From this it is shown that the
index theorem for follows from gauge invariance, that the Schwinger
model's contribution to the determinant is canceled in the weak field limit,
and that the determinant vanishes when the field strength is sufficiently
strong to form a zero-energy bound state
