Mitigating Distributed Denial of Service Attacks in an Anonymous Routing Environment: Client Puzzles and Tor
Online intelligence operations use the Internet to gather information on the activities of U.S. adversaries. The security of these operations is paramount, and one way to avoid being linked to the Department of Defense (DoD) is to use anonymous communication systems. One such system, Tor, makes interactive TCP services anonymous. Tor uses the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol and is thus vulnerable to a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that can significantly delay data traversing the Tor network. This research uses client puzzles to mitigate TLS DDoS attacks. A novel puzzle protocol, the Memoryless Puzzle Protocol (MPP), is conceived, implemented, and analyzed for anonymity and DDoS vulnerabilities. Consequently, four new secondary DDoS and anonymity attacks are identified and defenses are proposed. Furthermore, analysis of the MPP identified and resolved two important shortcomings of the generalized client puzzle technique. Attacks that normally induce victim CPU utilization rates of 80-100% are reduced to below 70%. Also, the puzzle implementation allows for user-data latency to be reduced by close to 50% during a large-scale attack .Finally, experimental results show successful mitigation can occur without sending a puzzle to every requesting client. By adjusting the maximum puzzle strength, CPU utilization can be capped at 70% even when an arbitrary client has only a 30% chance of receiving a puzzle

[Accepted Manuscript] Narratives of Promise, Narratives of Caution: A Review of the Literature on Social Impact Bonds
Social Impact Bonds (SIBs) are a new mechanism for delivering public services. This article reviews the emerging SIB literature in high-income settings. It identifies three distinct narratives: a public sector reform narrative; a financial sector reform narrative; and a cautionary narrative. These are analyzed relative to three themes: public versus private values; outcomes contracting; and risk allocation. The first two narratives are complementary and offer a ‘win-win’ portrayal of SIBs. The third narrative challenges this dominant commentary by highlighting potential risks. There is limited empirical evidence on active SIBs to support these narratives. SIBs may have the potential to align public and private interests while improving outcomes for people affected by entrenched social problems, but this is yet to be established and appears less probable than the third more cautionary narrative. More empirical research is needed to consider the potential risks, drawbacks, benefits and alternatives of SIBs in different settings
Escaping the perfect storm of simultaneous climate change impacts on agriculture and marine fisheries
The availability and production of food is threatened by climate change, with subsequent implications for food security and the global economy. In this study we assessed how the impacts of climate change on agriculture and marine fisheries interact under a range of scenarios. The 'business-as-usual' scenario would lead to ~90% of the global population, particularly in least developed countries, being exposed to declines in the productivity of both sectors, and < 3% of the world would experience productivity gains in both sectors. With strong mitigation equivalent to meeting Paris Agreement commitments, most countries including both the most vulnerable and the largest carbon emitters would show net gains in both agricultural and fisheries sectors
A grounded theory of positive youth development through sport based on results from a qualitative meta-study
The overall purpose of this study was to create a model of positive youth development (PYD) through sport grounded in the extant qualitative literature. More specifically, the first objective was to review and evaluate qualitative studies of PYD in sport. The second objective was to analyze and synthesize findings from these studies. Following record identification and screening, 63 articles were retained for analysis. Meta-method analysis revealed strengths of studies were the use of multiple data collection and validity techniques, which produced high-quality data. Weaknesses were limited use of ‘named’ methodologies and inadequate reporting of sampling procedures. Philosophical perspectives were rarely reported, and theory was used sparingly. Results of an inductive meta-data analysis produced three categories: PYD climate (adult relationships, peer relationships, and parental involvement), life skills program focus (life skill building activities and transfer activities), and PYD outcomes (in personal, social, and physical domains). A model that distinguishes between implicit and explicit processes to PYD is presented
Short Chain Fatty Acids Taken at Time of Thrombectomy in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Are Independent of Stroke Severity But Associated with Inflammatory Markers and Worse Symptoms at Discharge
Introduction: Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) are gut microbiota-derived metabolites that contribute to the gut-brain axis and may impact stroke outcomes following gut dysbiosis. We evaluated plasma SCFA concentrations against stroke severity parameters and identified SCFA-associated protein networks.
Methods: The Blood and Clot Thrombectomy Registry and Collaboration (BACTRAC), a continuously enrolling tissue bank, was used to obtain stroke samples. Arterial blood distal and proximal to the thrombus was obtained from Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) Patients (n=53) during thrombectomy. Patient demographics, stroke presentation and outcome parameters were reported. The SCFAs were isolated from proximal plasma via chemical derivatization UHPLC coupled tandem mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization and multiple reaction monitoring. Proteomic levels for 184 cardioembolic and inflammatory proteins was quantified from systemic and intracranial plasma by Olink. Arterial blood from cerebrovascular patients undergoing elective neurointerventional procedures was used as controls.
Results: Acetate positively correlated with time from last known normal (LKN) and was significantly lower in stroke patients compared to control. Isobutyrate, Butyrate and 2-Methylbutyrate negatively correlated with %ΔNIHSS. Isobutyrate and 2-Methylbutyrate positively correlated with NIHSS discharge. SCFA concentrations were not associated with NIHSS admission, infarct volume, or edema volume. Multiple SCFAs positively associated with systemic and pro-inflammatory cytokines, most notably IL-6, TNF-α, VCAM1, IL-17, and MCP-1.
Conclusions: Plasma SCFA concentrations taken at time of stroke are not associated with stroke severity at presentation. However, higher levels of SCFAs at the time of stroke are associated with increased markers of inflammation, less recovery from admission to discharge, and worse symptom burden at discharge
