How do mechanical engineering students see their training and learning at university? Findings from a case study

    Get PDF
This article draws upon research aimed at investigating teaching and learning in higher education within the so-called Bologna Process. The author discusses the ways in which students acquire engineering education and analyses the implications of redesigning initial training and rethinking teachers’ role. Data were gathered through interviews and questionnaires. A questionnaire was designed including both closed and open-ended questions. Four levels of information were included: biographic data (gender, age, initial training, current job position, etc), academic education (reasons for choosing mechanical engineering, reasons for selecting the University of Minho, expectations about the mechanical engineering course, etc), transition from the university to the labour market (difficulties faced, scope and nature of the work, etc) and graduate and post-graduate interests (areas, type and organisation for high level courses, specific courses). Background characteristics, such as years of experience, academic years of experience at the current job were also included. Overall, findings suggest a positive evaluation of initial training, namely, the ways students adapted to the University, relationships between students and the length of their practicum. They also highlighted a number of issues to be improved: a more hands-on approach and a better pedagogical intervention from lecturers.(undefined

Modeling and simulation of wear in revolute clearance joints in multibody systems

    Get PDF
The main goal of this work is to develop a methodology for studying and quantifying the wear phenomenon in revolute clearance joints. In the process, a simple model for a revolute joint in the framework of multibody systems formulation is presented. The evaluation of the contact forces developed is based on a continuous contact force model that accounts for the geometrical and materials properties of the colliding bodies. The friction effects due to the contact in the joints are also represented. Then, these contact-impact forces are used to compute the pressure field at the contact zone, which ultimately is employed to quantify the wear developed and caused by the relative sliding motion. In this work, the Archard’s wear model is used. A simple planar multibody mechanical system is used to perform numerical simulations, in order to discuss the assumptions and procedures adopted throughout this work. From the main results obtained, it can be drawn that the wear phenomenon is not uniformly distributed around the joint surface, owing to the fact that the contact between the joint elements is wider and more frequent is some specific regions.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Art of modelling contact problems in multibody dynamics

    Get PDF
12-14 Septiembre 2022This talk focuses on the main ingredients associated the art of modelling contact problems in multibody dynamics, covering the different methods to handle frictional collisions, namely the piecewise and continuous analysis. Special attention is given to the numerical aspects related to modelling and simulation of contact-impact events. Several examples of application will be considered to discuss the key features related to the modelling process of frictional contacts in dynamics systems

Professor Jorge Ambrósio: A Tribute at the University of Minho

I am fortunate to be one of Professor Jorge Ambrósio’s PhD students at the beginning of XXI century. The story starts in February 2000, when I first met Professor Jorge Ambrósio, during a visit to his institute. I still remember very well how astonished I was when Professor Jorge Ambrósio presented several multibody systems applications, including mechanisms analysis, vehicle dynamics, crashworthiness, biomechanics of motion, contact-impact problems, etc. In the same year, Professor Jorge Ambrósio went to University of Minho to be opponent in my Pedagogical Aptitude and Scientific Capacity Tests (PAPCC) – MSc equivalent – examination. One year later, Professor Jorge Ambrósio delivered a two-day course on “Kinematics and Dynamics of Mechanical Systems”, which was absolutely instrumental to my PhD work and my professional career. It is more than opportune to mention the exceptional professionalism demonstrated by Professor Jorge Ambrósio, who promoted a nice work atmosphere during coffee-breaks, lunches and dinners. The lunches at the Angolan restaurant “Mãe Preta” were simply delicious and unforgettable. Since the first days that Professor Jorge Ambrósio contributes to the development of a new scientific area related to multibody dynamics at the University, and maintains a constant and permanent collaboration with Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Minho. Thus, this talk is a simple and genuine tribute to Professor Jorge Ambrósio for all he has done and continues to do for the success of the “Dynamics of Mechanical Systems” scientific area at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Minho

A bibliometric overview of Mechanism and Machine Theory journal: publication trends from 1990 to 2020

    Get PDF
This work reports a bibliometric overview of Mechanism and Machine Theory journal in the timespan 1990-2020. This desideratum is achieved by considering the most relevant features associated with the life of this scientific journal, namely in terms of publications, citations, regions of origin of publications, authors, institutions, etc. In the present study, the Scopus database was chosen as the platform to identify and extract information on those aspects. Thus, based on the data collected, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of Mechanism and Machine Theory is performed, which permits to reveal the overall picture of the journal trends in evolution, as well as its impact and influence in the mechanism and machine science community. Overall, the outcomes presented in this study allow to observe that Mechanism and Machine Theory journal has been attracting more and more interest year after year.FCT -Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia(UIDB/04436/2020
