ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE AND EFFECTIVENESS: CAN AMERICAN THEORY BE APPLIED IN RUSSIA?

This paper examines the link between organizational culture and effectiveness for foreign-owned firms operating in Russia. Beginning with a model of organizational culture developed in the USA, the paper presents a multi-method analysis of culture and effectiveness in a transition economy. We argue that effectiveness in Russia relies more on adaptability and flexibility than in the USA. Furthermore, the legacy of the communist era forces firms in Russia to deal with a workforce with a unique time perspective and a unique set of sub-cultures that often undermine attempts at coordination and integration. We first explore these ideas using survey data on 179 foreign-owned firms operating in Russia and compare the results to those obtained for firms in the USA. We then present four case studies designed to ground the results in the Russian context, and to document cultural dynamics not captured by the model.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39984/3/wp598.pd

Enhanced Formal Verification Flow for Circuits Integrating Debugging and Coverage Analysis

    Get PDF
In this paper we briefly review techniques used in formal hardware verification. An advanced flow emerges from integrating two major methodological improvements: debugging support and coverage analysis. The verification engineer can locate the source of a failure with an automatic debugging support. Components are identified which explain the discrepancy between the property and the circuit behavior. This method is complemented by an approach to analyze functional coverage of the proven Bounded Model Checking(BMC) properties. The approach automatically determines whether the property set is complete or not. In the latter case coverage gaps are returned. Both techniques are integrated in an enhanced verification flow. A running example demonstrates the resulting advantages

Organizational Culture and Effectiveness: The Case of foreign Firms in Russia

This paper extends the literature on organizational culture and effectiveness by examining a set of foreign-owned firms operating in Russia. Based on a large-scale empirical study of 179 firms and four in-depth case studies, this study examines the applicability of an American model of organizational culture and effectiveness in the Russian context. The results of the empirical study are presented first and are compared to results for a sample of firms in the USA. Next, four case studies are used to ground the empirical results and to identify other aspects of organizational culture in the Russian context which appear to be linked to effectiveness, but are not included in the model.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39566/3/wp179.pd

MAE 4344 - Senior design capstone: Group 2b - Dolphin blowhole simulator

The use of drones have been proposed for the collection of biological samples in marine mammals, specifically marine biologists need to obtain samples of dolphin "blow" from their blowhole discharge in the wild. These non-invasive techniques are needed to assess biological health such as reproductive and adrenal functions. While the techniques have been demonstrated on whales, dolphins have proven more difficult to obtain samples from due to their speed and apprehensiveness to typical quadcopter drone. Thus, quiet fixed wing vehicles are proposed. In order to assess the feasibility to capture a sample, a blowhole simulator is needed that mimics the intermittent outflow characteristics of the blowhole jet, including flow rate, jet velocity, height, and spread

    SAT-based Automatic Test Pattern Generation

Abstract. Due to the rapidly growing size of integrated circuits, there is a need for new algorithms for Automatic Test Pattern Generation (ATPG). While classical algorithms reach their limit, there have been recent advances in algorithms to solve Boolean Satisfiability (SAT). Because Boolean SAT solvers are working on Conjunctive Normal Forms (CNF), the problem has to be transformed. During transformation, relevant information about the problem might get lost and therefore is not available in the solving process. In the following we briefly motivate the problem and provide the latest developments in the field. The technique was implemented and experimental results are presented. The approach was combined with the ATPG framework of NXP Semiconductors. Significant improvements in overall performance and robustness are demonstrated

A relational database to identify differentially expressed genes in the endometrium and endometriosis lesions

    Get PDF
Endometriosis is a common inflammatory estrogen-dependent gynecological disorder, associated with pelvic pain and reduced fertility in women. Several aspects of this disorder and its cellular and molecular etiology remain unresolved. We have analyzed the global gene expression patterns in the endometrium, peritoneum and in endometriosis lesions of endometriosis patients and in the endometrium and peritoneum of healthy women. In this report, we present the EndometDB, an interactive web-based user interface for browsing the gene expression database of collected samples without the need for computational skills. The EndometDB incorporates the expression data from 115 patients and 53 controls, with over 24000 genes and clinical features, such as their age, disease stages, hormonal medication, menstrual cycle phase, and the different endometriosis lesion types. Using the web-tool, the end-user can easily generate various plot outputs and projections, including boxplots, and heatmaps and the generated outputs can be downloaded in pdf-format.Peer reviewe
