    Electrically conductive epoxy nanocomposites containing carbonaceous fillers and in-situ generated silver nanoparticles

    An epoxy resin was nanomodified with in-situ generated silver nanoparticles (Ag) and with various amounts of carbon black (CB) and carbon nanofibers (NF), in order to increase the electrical conductivity of the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry tests revealed how the addition of both CB and NF led to a slight decrease of the glass transition temperature of the material, while electron microscopy evidenced how the dimension of CB aggregates increased with the filler content. Both flexural modulus and stress at yield were decreased by CB addition, and the introduction of Ag nanoparticles promoted an interesting improvement of the flexural resistance. CB resulted to be more effective than NF in decreasing the electrical resistance of the materials down to 103 !·cm. Therefore, a rapid heating of the CB-filled samples upon voltage application was observed, while Ag nanoparticles allowed a stabilization of the temperature for elevated voltage application times

    Three-dimensional ISAR imaging: a review

    Three-dimensional (3D) inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging has been proven feasible by combining traditional ISAR imaging and interferometry. Such technique, namely inteferometric ISAR (In-ISAR), allows for the main target scattering centres to be mapped into a 3D spatial domain as point clouds. Specifically, the use of an In-ISAR system can overcome the main geometrical interpretation issues imposed by the monostatic acquisition geometry as the problem of cross-range scaling and unknown image projection plane (IPP). However, some issues remain such as scatterer scintillation, shadowing effects, poor SNR etc., which limit the effectiveness of 3D imaging. A solution to such unsolved issues can be found in the use of multiple 3D views, which can be obtained exploiting either multi-temporal or multi-perspective configurations or a combination of both. This study aims to review the main concepts to produce multi-view 3D ISAR images by using In-ISAR systems also presenting real data collected with a multi-static In-ISAR system

    Analysis in Dried Fruit by LC/MS/MS and a Modified QuEChERS Procedure

    A sensitive and reliable multi-mycotoxin method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 toxicological important mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2; enniatins A, A1, B, and B1; beauvericin; ochratoxin A; fumonisin B1, B2, andB3; diacetoxyscirprenol; HT-2; and T-2 toxin in dried fruits using liquid chromatography combined with electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole tandem-mass spectrometry. Mycotoxins have been extracted from the samples using a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe procedure. The method was based on a single extraction with acidified acetonitrile, followed by partitioning with salts, avoiding any further clean-up step. Limits of detections ranged from 0.08 to 15 μg kg−1 and limits of quantification ranged from 0.2 to 45 μg kg−1, which were below the legal limit set by the European Union for the legislated mycotoxines. The recoveries in spiked samples ranged from 60 to 135 % except for beauvericin using matrix-matched calibration curves for quantification, with good inter- and intraday repeatability (respective relative standard deviation ≤20 and 9 %). The developed method was applied to 15 commercial dried fruits: raisins, figs, apricots, plums, and dates purchased in local markets from Spain. Among the mycotoxins studied, enniantins and aflatoxins were the most predominant mycotoxins

In particular, the themes of (de)globalization and (dis)information are deepened, pointing out the reinforcement of the state and the risks connected to an increasing cognitive confusion

    Evaluation of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues in the proteomic analysis of parathyroid glands

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Proteomic research in the field of parathyroid tissues is limited by the very small dimension of the glands and by the low incidence of cancer lesions (1%). Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens are a potentially valuable resource for discovering protein cancer biomarkers. In this study we have verified the applicability of a heat induced protein extraction from FFPE parathyroid adenoma tissues followed by a gel-based or gel-free proteomic approach in order to achieve protein separation and identification.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The best results for high quality MS spectra and parameters, were obtained by using a gel-free approach, and up to 163 unique proteins were identified. Similar results were obtained by applying both SDS-out and SDS-out + TCA/Acetone techniques during the gel-free method. Western blot analysis carried out with specific antibodies suggested that the antigenicity was not always preserved, while specific immunoreactions were detected for calmodulin, B box and SPRY domain-containing protein (BSPRY), peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX 6) and parvalbumin.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In spite of some limitations mainly due to the extensive formalin-induced covalent cross-linking, our results essentially suggest the applicability of a proteomic approach to FFPE parathyroid specimens. From our point of view, FFPE extracts might be an alternative source, especially in the validation phase of protein biomarkers when a large cohort of samples is required and the low availability of frozen tissues might be constraining.</p

    The Role of Pain Catastrophizing and Pain Acceptance in Performance-Based and Self-Reported Physical Functioning in Individuals with Fibromyalgia and Obesity

    Impaired physical functioning is one of the most critical consequences associated with fibromyalgia, especially when there is comorbid obesity. Psychological factors are known to contribute to perceived (i.e., subjective) physical functioning. However, physical function is a multidimensional concept encompassing both subjective and objective functioning. The contribution of psychological factors to performance-based (i.e., objective) functioning is unclear. This study aims to investigate the contribution of pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance to both self-reported and performancebased physical functioning. In this cross-sectional study, 160 participants completed self-report measures of pain catastrophizing, pain acceptance, and pain severity. A self-report measure and a performance-based test were used to assess physical functioning. Higher pain catastrophizing and lower pain acceptance were associated with poorer physical functioning at both self-reported and performance-based levels. Our results are consistent with previous evidence on the association between pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance with self-reported physical functioning. This study contributes to the current literature by providing novel insights into the role of psychological factors in performance-based physical functioning. Multidisciplinary interventions that address pain catastrophizing and pain acceptance are recommended and might be effective to improve both perceived and performance-based functioning in women with FM and obesity

    Salivary psoriasin (S100A7) correlates with diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide in a large cohort of systemic sclerosis patients

    Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease characterized by progressive fibrosis of the skin and the internal organs. In a previous work we suggested a correlation between levels of salivary psoriasin (S100A7) and pulmonary involvement in SSc patients. The goals of this study are to determine the distribution characteristics of psoriasin in whole saliva (WS) of SSc and healthy donor populations and define its predictive value on diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO), along with others clinical parameters. Methods: Salivary level of psoriasin was determined by ELISA kit in 134 SSc patients, 63 Raynaud syndrome patients, 40 patients affected by other connective diseases (non-case) and 74 healthy control subjects. Results: A significant increase of salivary psoriasin was observed in SSc patients when compared with other healthy and pathological controls. Moreover, we confirmed the efficacy of salivary psoriasin to correlate with DLCO in a large cohort of SSc patients. Conclusions: Overall our results suggest a rapid, non invasive and low costing method which can help clinicians in the evaluation of SSc pulmonary involvement

    Proteomic approach used in the diagnosis of Riedel's thyroiditis: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Riedel's thyroiditis, a rare thyroid disease, can be difficult to diagnose prior to surgical removal and can be confused with malignancy both clinically and cytologically.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 72-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with a goiter, which showed a rapid increase in size at ultrasound check, suggesting malignancy. Because of inconclusive cytology, a total thyroidectomy was performed. Fine-needle aspiration of the removed thyroid was processed by two-dimensional electrophoresis, and the proteome was compared with both anaplastic cancer and control samples. Significant differentially expressed protein spots were identified by Western blot analysis by using specific antibodies.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The protein pattern of Riedel's fine-needle aspiration revealed a superimposition with that of the control samples. The comparison of the protein pattern of Riedel's thyroiditis fine-needle aspiration with that of anaplastic cancer showed evidence of a different expression of ferritin heavy chains, ferritin light chains, and haptoglobins, as previously reported in thyroid cancers. Therefore, we performed Western blot analysis of these proteins and validated that their expression levels were low or absent in Riedel's thyroiditis and control samples despite the high concentrations present in fine-needle aspiration anaplastic samples. The concurrent absent or low expression levels of haptoglobin, ferritin light chain, and ferritin heavy chain in Riedel's thyroiditis fine-needle aspiration samples strongly indicate the benign nature of the thyroid lesion. These results suggest the potential applicability of fine-needle aspiration proteome analysis for Riedel's thyroiditis diagnosis.</p
