The anomalous C 4 intensity ratio in symbiotic stars

    Get PDF
The C IV lambda lambda 1548.2,1550.8 resonance doublet in a symbiotic stars was shown to exhibit anomalous line intensity ratios in which I (lambda 1548.2)/I(lambda 1550.8) less than 1, or less than the optically-thick limit of unity. The R Aquarii-central HII region and RX Puppis exhibit this phenomena. The I(lambda 1548.2)/I(lambda 1550.8) ratio in RX Puppis is found to vary inversely with the total C IV line intensity, and with the FES-visual light, as the object declined over a 5 yr period following a brightening in UV and optical emission which peaked in 1982. This doublet intensity behavior could be explained by a wind which has a narrow velocity range of 600 approx. less than sup v wind approx. less than 1000 km/sec, or by the pumping of the Fe II (mul. 45.01) transition a sup 4 F sub 9/2 - y sup 4 H(o) sub 11/2 by C IV lambda 1548.2, which effectively scatters C IV photons into the Fe II spectrum in these objects

Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 34-35).A hybrid envisionment is a novel representation of a simulated state graph, specifying all possible states and transitions of the system, characterized by both qualitative and quantitative state variables. The Deep Green project creates a hybrid envisionment, called a futures graph, to depict all possible occurrences and outcomes of a combat engagement between friendly and enemy units on a battlefield. During combat, Al state estimation techniques are utilized to efficiently track the state of the battle in a futures graph, giving the commander an up-to-date analysis of what is taking place on the battlefield and how it the battle could turn out. Because state estimation of highly complex hybrid envisionments is a relatively unexplored and novel process, it is important to ensure that it is handled efficiently and accurately enough for usage on the field. This paper explores an approach for discerning the behavior in state estimation through the use of an analysis suite. By accompanying Deep Green state estimation with the analysis suite developed, estimation techniques could be benchmarked and analyzed over various implementations through both numerical and graphical metrics. The metrics generated greatly helped to improve the estimation algorithm over the course of its development.by Joseph M. Fahey.M.Eng

The Rise and Fall of A Midwestern Studies Journal: The Old Northwest, 1975-1992

    Get PDF
The Old Northwest was a scholarly journal published at Miami University (Ohio) from 1975 to 1992. Its focus was on the states that had been part of the Old Northwest Territory, or those bounded by the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Mississippi rivers: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. In the inaugural issue the editors pointed to the Northwest Territory Celebration Commission of 1937, and argued that the Old Northwest had a distinctive cultural identity comparable to that of New England and of the Old South. The journal was founded with the support of Phillip R. Shriver, a historian who served as president of Miami University from 1965 to 1981 and who taught classes on the history of Ohio and Miami. There is no website listing Old Northwest tables of contents, alas, but I hope this recollection will cause scholars of a new generation of Midwestern studies to revisit The Old Northwest where it can be found in research libraries

    Margaret Fison, 1817-1866: Mid-Victorian Reformer

    Get PDF
This article explores the life of Margaret Fison, an English social reformer who championed workingmen and women and criticized the upper and middle classes for their indifference to working-class problems. Fisom\u27s combined anti-Catholic evangelical Protestantism with her mid-Victorian enthusiasm for science and social reform. As well as being a writer, Fison was an activist who took to the field as an organizer for the related causes of health and temperance. Her life illustrated what a young widow from a provincial town could achieve. Her early death at age forty-eight helps explain her undeserved obscurity. This papers use of her published travel articles returns Fison to her place in history

    SLO Hard Seltzer

For my senior project, I created an alcoholic seltzer brand called SLO Seltzer. SLO Seltzer is marketed towards young adults of all genders ranging from the ages of 21 to 26 who are either currently living in San Luis Obispo or who have a personal connection to the area. I designed a unique logo, created eye-catching packaging prototypes, and developed a cohesive social media presence which encapsulates the business’ brand, goals, and values. To complete this project, I began by researching the current alcoholic seltzer market to find out which business strategies have created the most successful brands and use this information to guide my project forward. I also looked at successful alcoholic beverage designs to see how I could mimic their techniques in my designs. My next steps included developing a color scheme, logos, branding mood boards, and rough prototypes of packaging designs. From there, I developed a more finalized brand and design using my skills in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Dimension. I also received feedback from my peers and experts in the field of marketing to get more sets of eyes on my work and add improvements to my designs. By the end of the quarter, I have created a unique alcoholic seltzer brand that would hopefully be able to compete with popular brands in the city of San Luis Obispo if it were to be launched into production

The evolution of glutathione metabolism in phototrophic microorganisms

The low molecular weight thiol composition of a variety of phototropic microorganisms is examined in order to ascertain how evolution of glutathione (GSH) production is related to the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis. Cells were extracted in the presence of monobromobimane (mBBr) to convert thiols (RSH) to fluorescent derivatives (RSmB) which were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Significant levels of GSH were not found in green sulfur bacteria. Substantial levels were present in purple bacteria, cyanobacteria, and eukaryotic algae. Other thiols measured included cysteine, gamma-glutamylcysteine, thiosulfate, coenzyme A, and sulfide. Many of the organisms also exhibited a marked ability to reduce mBBr to syn-(methyl,methyl)bimane, an ability which was quenched by treatment with 2-pyridyl disulfide or 5,5 prime-bisdithio - (2-nitrobenzoic acid) prior to reaction with mBBr. These observations indicate the presence of a reducing system capable of electron transfer to mBBr and reduction of reactive disulfides. The distribution of GSH in phototropic eubacteria indicates that GSH synthesis evolved at or around the time that oxygenic photosynthesis evolved
