Fiction as a Means to Understanding the Dynamics of Empathy

The current study investigated whether the reflective reading of fiction can provide an experiential definition of empathy to supplement more traditional concept analyses. A secondary aim was to look at the rates of absorption (loss of time and space) relative to the rate of reported empathic engagement. Based on earlier studies on reading fiction as an engagement in a social simulation, it was predicted that because fiction is a controlled experience, reading and talking about fiction could provide a forum in which to examine actual experiences of empathy elicitation in relation to an evolving situation. A survey was conducted with 210 student participants over a three-year period. The results show that the empathetic response to narrative is affected in a variety of ways by the presence or absence of an initial sense of affinity and by cognitive input over time, that is, the changing perception of characters and the situations with which they are confronted. Adept readers are more likely to experience absorption, and those who experience absorption are more likely to be empathetically responsive to input and changes in a situation. Empathetic emotions and cognitive empathy can be experienced for multiple objects simultaneously in one situation and relate to past events and potential futures, but they also shift from object to object

Moors, Social Anxiety and Horror in Thomas Rawlins's The Rebellion

In her article, Anna Fåhraeus contextualizes race within multiple images of social horror in Thomas Rawlins’s little-discussed tragedy The Rebellion (1640). While racial representation of the Moors in the play adheres to stereotype, Fåhraeus contends that the multiple racial doubling works to interrogate the certainty of nature versus culture in relation to race, even as the image of the tailors that runs through the play does the same in relation to class. Both issues—race and class—become sexualized through the juxtaposition of male and female characters and gender itself thus becomes a third site of epistemological uncertainty: are women materially changed through sexual experience or exposure? Fåhraeus suggests that The Rebellion merits serious consideration because it links the depiction of race to upward social mobility and constructions of female purity, and all three to the loss of white male privilege

Läsfrämjande, forskning och kompetensutveckling i Halland

Hösten 2015 blev Regionbibliotek Halland kontaktad av två forskare från Halmstad högskola för en första diskussion om eventuella samarbeten. Och vi behövde inte sitta många minuter tillsammans förrän Anna Fåhraeus, lektor i engelska och litteraturvetenskap, Jonas Asklund, lektor i litteraturvetenskap och vi från regionbiblioteket insåg att vi hade många gemensamma frågor som vi ville studera och gå vidare med. Regionbibliotekets goda erfarenhet att samarbeta med forskare utanför professionen har varit en drivande kraft. Att låta någon som inte är färgad av biblioteksvärlden reflektera över vårt arbete har tidigare visat sig vara lyckosamt. Anna och Jonas förankring i lärarutbildningen var en annan god grund för samarbete; bibliotekarieyrket och läraryrket har överlappningar som vi fortfarande är dåliga på att ta tillvara. Regionbiblioteket hade redan ett stort projekt på gång tillsammans med samtliga folkbibliotek i Halland. Folkbibliotekschefsgruppen hade initierat ett utbildningspaket för alla anställda kring litteratur och läsning – en insats som i synnerhet Eiler Jansson, utvecklingsledare på Regionbiblioteket höll samman. Vi bestämde nu att Halmstad högskola skulle gå in i denna satsning som föreläsare, följeforskare och samtalspartners. Efter denna dag föreslog de båda forskarna att de skulle gå vidare med en enkät samt en del djupintervjuer för att bättre fånga hur biblioteksanställda arbetar med läsfrämjande i Halland men också att försöka fånga upp ytterligare insatser som behöver göras. Det känns viktigt att påpeka att forskning utförd i sådan nära relation som i detta fall ändå är självständig. Detta är inte en uppdragsforskning där beställaren har en ungefärlig bild av vad som ska undersökas. Tvärtom, frågeställningen var ett gemensamt beslut, en färdriktning som skulle gynna både professionen och akademin. Anna Fåhraeus och Jonas Asklund presenterar här sina egna analyser och resultat. Regionbiblioteket har stått till tjänst med bakgrundsmaterial, samordning och utgivning. Rapporten ger svar på hur bibliotekarier i Halland ser på sitt läsfrämjande arbete och förslag på insatser som behöver göras. Den har gett oss mycket att tänka på och folkbibliotekschefsgruppen kommer att tillsammans med regionbibliotekarien och Halmstad högskola bestämma hur vi ska gå vidare. För gå vidare vill vi.
