    Predicting Compliance in Voice Therapy using the Voice Handicap Index

    Research indicates that it is not uncommon for patients to cancel or postpone scheduled appointments for speech therapy designed to improve the voice, i.e., voice therapy. The purpose of this study is to determine if patient perceptions of their voice and vocal problems will predict which patients exhibit noncompliance with a voice therapy program. The present study also analyzed the effects of demographic variables (i.e. age, gender, occupation, etc.) on patient compliance with voice therapy.   Twenty-five patient participants were included in this study. Before undergoing voice therapy, these participants were asked to complete the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) in order to obtain a subjective measure of how their vocal "problems" have affected their everyday lives: physically, emotionally, and functionally. The VHI is a standardized patient attitude rating scale that has been shown to document similar issues with patient compliance. Prior to this study, however, variables including occupation, type of insurance coverage, and driving distance from the clinic were not included in those analyses. The individual questions of the VHI were also analyzed in comparison to adherence to therapy recommendations. Descriptive analyses of the data revealed that the VHI scores and responses to individual VHI questions provided no practical significance in predicting patient compliance or noncompliance to voice therapy. In addition, analyses of demographic variables did not offer information that had practical significance regarding patient compliance or noncompliance to therapy.M.S

    From Writer to Teacher: The Gradual Release of Responsibility in an Early Childhood Education Writing Course for Pre-Service Teachers

    Teaching students to become confident, capable writers is imperative in today’s world. Growing attention has been paid to the amount and kinds of writing students are experiencing in schools with an urgent plea for more time and attention given to writing instruction (Nagin, 2003; National Commission on Writing, 2003). Yet, few teachers feel well prepared to teach writing. In this special issue on writing methods courses, we discuss the evolution of our writing methods course for early childhood preservice teachers (PK-5). Specifically, we examine the current pedagogical practices within the course to support preservice teachers’ experiential learning. This piece examines how a gradual release of responsibility model with multiple units of study supports preservice teachers as writers and as future teachers of writers

    The Initial Mass Function and Disk Frequency of the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud: An Extinction-Limited Sample

    We have completed an optical spectroscopic survey of an unbiased, extinction-limited sample of candidate young stars covering 1.3 square degrees of the Rho Ophiuchi star forming region. While infrared, X-ray, and optical surveys of the cloud have identified many young stellar objects (YSOs), these surveys are biased towards particular stages of stellar evolution and are not optimal for studies of the disk frequency and initial mass function.We have obtained over 300 optical spectra to help identify 135 association members based on the presence of H-alpha in emission, lithium absorption, X-ray emission, a mid-infrared excess, a common proper motion, reflection nebulosity, and/or extinction considerations. Spectral types along with R and I band photometry were used to derive effective temperatures and bolometric luminosities for association members to compare with theoretical tracks and isochrones for pre-main-sequence stars. An average age of 3.1 Myr is derived for this population which is intermediate between that of objects embedded in the cloud core of Rho Ophiuchi and low mass stars in the Upper Scorpius subgroup. Consistent with this age we find a circumstellar disk frequency of 27% plus or minus 5%. We also constructed an initial mass function for an extinction-limited sample of 123 YSOs (A_v less than or equal to 8 mag), which is consistent with the field star initial mass function for YSOs with masses > 0.2 M_sun. There may be a deficit of brown dwarfs but this result relies on completeness corrections and requires confirmation.Comment: 46 pages, 7 figures, 4 table

    iPSCORE: A Resource of 222 iPSC Lines Enabling Functional Characterization of Genetic Variation across a Variety of Cell Types.

    Large-scale collections of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) could serve as powerful model systems for examining how genetic variation affects biology and disease. Here we describe the iPSCORE resource: a collection of systematically derived and characterized iPSC lines from 222 ethnically diverse individuals that allows for both familial and association-based genetic studies. iPSCORE lines are pluripotent with high genomic integrity (no or low numbers of somatic copy-number variants) as determined using high-throughput RNA-sequencing and genotyping arrays, respectively. Using iPSCs from a family of individuals, we show that iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes demonstrate gene expression patterns that cluster by genetic background, and can be used to examine variants associated with physiological and disease phenotypes. The iPSCORE collection contains representative individuals for risk and non-risk alleles for 95% of SNPs associated with human phenotypes through genome-wide association studies. Our study demonstrates the utility of iPSCORE for examining how genetic variants influence molecular and physiological traits in iPSCs and derived cell lines

    The Impact of ECB Communication on Financial Market Expectations

    This paper analyzes European financial markets' comprehension and interpretation of ECB communication signals. By applying a novel indicator developed by Berger et al. (2006), that quantifies the contents of the ECB's introductory statements, we find that communication affects the term structure of interest rates in the medium run over a horizon between five months to one year. Our results suggest that financial market agents expect the ECB to prepare them for a change in interest rates well in advance. However, judging upon the dynamics of the response, the exact timing of a decision is less foreseeable. Disentangling the effects of ECB statements on prices, the real and the monetary sector, we provide evidence that especially the ECB's interpretation and forecasts of price developments represent important news to financial market agents

    SHINING, A Survey of Far-infrared Lines in Nearby Galaxies. I. Survey Description, Observational Trends, and Line Diagnostics

    We use the Herschel/PACS spectrometer to study the global and spatially resolved far-infrared (FIR) fine-structure line emission in a sample of 52 galaxies that constitute the SHINING survey. These galaxies include star-forming, active-galactic nuclei (AGN), and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We find an increasing number of galaxies (and kiloparsec size regions within galaxies) with low line-to-FIR continuum ratios as a function of increasing FIR luminosity (LFIRL_{\mathrm{FIR}}), dust infrared color, LFIRL_{\mathrm{FIR}} to molecular gas mass ratio (LFIR/MmolL_{\mathrm{FIR}}/M_{\mathrm{mol}}), and FIR surface brightness (ΣFIR\Sigma_{\mathrm{FIR}}). The correlations between the [CII]/FIR or [OI]/FIR ratios with ΣFIR\Sigma_{\mathrm{FIR}} are remarkably tight (∼0.3\sim0.3 dex scatter over almost four orders of magnitude in ΣFIR\Sigma_{\mathrm{FIR}}). We observe that galaxies with LFIR/Mmol≳80 L⊙ M⊙−1L_{\mathrm{FIR}}/M_{\mathrm{mol}} \gtrsim 80\,L_{\odot}\,M_{\odot}^{-1} and ΣFIR≳1011\Sigma_{\mathrm{FIR}}\gtrsim10^{11} L⊙L_{\odot} kpc−2^{-2} tend to have weak fine-structure line-to-FIR continuum ratios, and that LIRGs with infrared sizes ≳1\gtrsim1 kpc have line-to-FIR ratios comparable to those observed in typical star-forming galaxies. We analyze the physical mechanisms driving these trends in Paper II (Herrera-Camus et al. 2018). The combined analysis of the [CII], [NII], and [OIII] lines reveals that the fraction of the [CII] line emission that arises from neutral gas increases from 60% to 90% in the most active star-forming regions and that the emission originating in the ionized gas is associated with low-ionization, diffuse gas rather than with dense gas in HII regions. Finally, we report the global and spatially resolved line fluxes of the SHINING galaxies to enable the comparison and planning of future local and high-zz studies
