    Mr. William King was a man whom the city of Savannah could not do without from the time of his birth in 1806 to the time of his death by 1892. Mr. King was actually born on St. Simons Island but at that time the Golden Isles were merely an extension of Savannah which was the key center of trade for the region. William King quickly learned from his father, Roswell, that civic participation was a must if one intended to acquire Southern wealth during the 1800\u27s. Mr. King voiced his opinions well 1st as Foreman of the First Panel of the Chatham County Gr nd Jury, 2nd as the staunch leader of the Temperance Movement in Savannah, and 3rd as a firm supporter of Southern rights and grievances during the Civil War.     Adults’ numeracy practices in fluid and unstable contexts—An agenda for education, policy and research?

    Numeracy practices are always dependent on the social context in which they emerge. These contexts, however, are unstable because of a range of technological and socio-political changes. How does this instability affect people’s agency in the world? After reviewing key approaches to numeracy practices research, we distil key findings from recent numeracy studies. We introduce the concept of the numerate environment to examine the context in which opportunities, supports and demands present themselves for people’s numeracy development, explaining how cultural-historical activity theory can be used to analyse the effects of changes in numerate environments. We consider examples of social trends likely to effect such changes and conclude with implications of shifts in people’s numerate environment for future educational provision, policy and research

    Fatigue Countermeasure Using Automatic Real-Time Video Processing of Eye Characteristics

    Fatigue is a large and growing problem for aviators and motor vehicle drivers. A fatigue countermeasure based on digital video processing of images of the subject’s face has been developed. Digital video data of drivers was collected in experiments in a driving simulator at the University of Iowa. Algorithms were developed to automatically locate the head, eyes, and face features of the driver using wide field-of-view images. The exposed eye area is quantified using the final eye target location. Automatic processing of face features in a vehicle environment is a difficult task due to the complexity of the scene and the variable lighting conditions. The use of both static and dynamic processing in parallel and the use of symmetry has lead to the development of innovative and useful algorithms for automatic face location and feature detection. The prototype system was effective in automatic feature location for all 13 subjects tested in driving simulator studies. The appearance of visible eye features is quantified and used to determine onset of potentially dangerous fatigue conditions. An alarm event is generated if the eyes remain closed longer than 1.5 seconds, or if sustained reduction in area of exposed eye features is detected (eyelid droop). Other studies in the literature have validated correlation of measures of pupil occlusion (such as PERCLOS) with operator performance lapse. The system is designed to work with an inexpensive digital video sensor mounted on the dashboard of a vehicle and runs on standard computing hardware

    Bridges of the BeltLine

    As currently realized, the Atlanta BeltLine weaves under, over, and through a multitude of overpasses, footbridges, and tunnels. As in any city, this significant feature is simultaneously an asset and a potential hazard. These types of structures are "vulnerable critical facilities" that should be included in emergency risk assessments and mitigation planning (FEMA, 2013). As such, the Bridges of the BeltLine project was proposed as a mixed-methods study to understand how people's movement along the BeltLine can inform emergency management mitigation, planning, and response. Understanding pedestrian flow in cities has been underfunded and understudied but is nonetheless critical to city infrastructure monitoring and improvement projects. This study focused on developing inexpensive, low-power consumption sensors capable of detecting human presence while preserving privacy, as well as a survey designed to collect data that the sensors cannot. The survey data were intended to describe BeltLine users, querying on demographics, reasons, frequency, duration of use, and mode of travel to and on the BeltLine. After conferring with the Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (ABI) leadership, it became apparent that ABI's primary interest is in understanding which communities are being served by the BeltLine and whether it has changed commuting and travel behaviors or created new demand. As a result, the project's original focus on emergency management was expanded to explore which communities are being served and for what kind of use. As such, the project's revised objective was two-fold: to facilitate understanding of (a) whether the BeltLine is serving the adjacent communities and purpose of use and (b) to inform emergency mitigation, planning, and response.This research was made possible by a grant from Georgia Tech's Executive Vice President of Research, Small Bets Seed Grants program, with supplemental funding from the Center for the Development and Application of Internet of Things Technologies (CDAIT)

    Dimerization and opposite base-dependent catalytic impairment of polymorphic S326C OGG1 glycosylase

    Human 8-oxoguanine-DNA glycosylase (OGG1) is the major enzyme for repairing 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG), a mutagenic guanine base lesion produced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). A frequently occurring OGG1 polymorphism in human populations results in the substitution of serine 326 for cysteine (S326C). The 326 C/C genotype is linked to numerous cancers, although the mechanism of carcinogenesis associated with the variant is unclear. We performed detailed enzymatic studies of polymorphic OGG1 and found functional defects in the enzyme. S326C OGG1 excised 8-oxoG from duplex DNA and cleaved abasic sites at rates 2- to 6-fold lower than the wild-type enzyme, depending upon the base opposite the lesion. Binding experiments showed that the polymorphic OGG1 binds DNA damage with significantly less affinity than the wild-type enzyme. Remarkably, gel shift, chemical cross-linking and gel filtration experiments showed that S326C both exists in solution and binds damaged DNA as a dimer. S326C OGG1 enzyme expressed in human cells was also found to have reduced activity and a dimeric conformation. The glycosylase activity of S326C OGG1 was not significantly stimulated by the presence of AP-endonuclease. The altered substrate specificity, lack of stimulation by AP-endonuclease 1 (APE1) and anomalous DNA binding conformation of S326C OGG1 may contribute to its linkage to cancer incidence

    Video recorded cross-examination or re-examination: a discussion on practice and research

    The Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act (YJCEA, 1999) was designed as a support mechanism to alleviate fear, and enable vulnerable and intimidated witnesses (VIW) within criminal trials Special Measures (SM), such as screens and video recorded evidence (Hoyle & Zedner, 2007). The introduction of video recorded cross-examination, or re-examination, under s.28 of the YJCEA is one of the most recent SM to be used within criminal trials. This procedure reduces the time between initial examination of some witnesses and the subsequent cross-examination in not guilty cases. This discussion paper emphasises a number of key research areas that could yield future improvements within s.28. The development of linguistic psychology, best evidence, and disclosure rules would be future avenues for research, providing emphasis and direction. It is a well-recognised fact that there are inherent issues around the identification of witnesses who may benefit from measures under the YJCEA (Ellison, 1999; Burton et al., 2006; Charles, 2012). There is still a significant gap within research around the development of the Intermediary service amongst other areas of the CJS, and in relation to VIWs; however, this is seen to have strong links with the ability to conduct through interviews with witnesses and defendants alike (Plotnikoff & Woolfson, 2007; Oxburgh et al., 2016). There may be much to be gained from a process of analysis where s.28 cross-examinations take place, and subsequent recordings, are subjected to interdisciplinary research scrutiny
