Helping a Student with Learning Disabilities Develop Automaticity with Multiplication Facts

    Get PDF
An eighth-grade student, was able to memorize multiplication facts (0 to 10) for the zeroes to fives with 100% accuracy. In a previous study [1] the student used skip counting and her hands to recall all the facts for the ones to fives. The overall goal of the current study was to improve the student’s automaticity of multiplication facts (0-10) for the ones through fives, such as 4 x 6 = 24. The student had been taught multiplication concepts in her elementary years and she did have a basic understanding of the meaning of multiplication facts as shown in the previous study.  She understood that 4 x 6 is a representation of four sets of six or 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24.  The student had used skip counting and flash cards with illustrations of the multiplication facts to memorize the multiplication facts. In the current study a multiple baseline design was used to measure the acquisition of fluency of multiplication facts over time. The student was able to develop automaticity with 80% accuracy by giving the solution within 3 seconds for all of the facts (0-10) for the ones through fives

In previous studies, the student used skip counting and her hands to recall [1] all the multiplication facts for the ones to fives and also gained automaticity [2] for the ones to fives facts. In the current study the ninth-grade student was able to memorize the multiplication facts (0 to 10) for the sixes to nines and gained automaticity with 80% accuracy. The overall goal of the current study was to improve the student’s automaticity of multiplication facts (0-10) for the sixes through nines, such as 6 x 7 = 42. The student had been taught multiplication concepts in her elementary years and she has a basic understanding of the meaning of multiplication facts as shown in the previous studies.  She understood that 6 x 7 is a representation of six sets of seven or 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 42.  The student had previously used skip counting and flash cards with illustrations of the multiplication facts to memorize the facts. In the current study a multiple baseline design was used to measure the acquisition of fluency of multiplication facts over time. The student was able to develop automaticity with 80% accuracy by giving the solution within 3 seconds for all of the facts (0-10) for the sixes through nines

ANALYZING ALGEBRAIC THINKING USING “GUESS MY NUMBER” PROBLEMS

The purpose of this study was to assess student knowledge of numeric, visual and algebraic representations. A definite gap between arithmetic and algebra has been documented in the research. The researchers’ goal was to identify a link between the two. Using four “Guess My Number problems, seventh and tenth grade students were asked to write numeric, visual, and algebraic representations. Seventh-grade students had significantly higher scores than tenth-grade students on visual representation responses. There were no significant differences between the seventh and tenth grade students’ responses on the numeric and algebraic representation. The researchers believed that the semi-concrete and visual models, such as used in this study, may provide the link between numeric and algebraic concepts for many students

Propuestas prácticas en la docencia de Dº Mercantil y Dº Procesal para la adquisición de competencias de ejercicio de la abogacía

One of the key indicators of EHEA is the employability of graduated law students. Along with the new regulation concerning becoming a lawyer in Spain, precisely the acquisition of such skills and competences is essential in the design and implementation of the new degrees.

The Climate changed being alive : reading "The future home of the living God" through the lens of the anthropocene

This paper aims to analyze Louise Erdrich's Future Home of the Living God from an ecocritical viewpoint, utilizing the perspective that the knowledge about the problematic emerging from the concept of the Anthropocene gives us, in order to carry out a wider research than that one provided by traditional ecocriticism. Dilemmas about complex systems of technology, epigenetic changes in living organisms motivated by climate change, and the analysis of the book tied to the concept of an eco-fascist dystopia will be considered from an ecofeminist perspective, whose goal is to find common ground between the difficulties that humanity will have face during this new geological era through the literary analysis of Erdrich's novel

Insects As Indicators of Environmental Stress

In the face of climate change-related events and anthropogenic disturbances, understanding the impacts of these events on species richness, abundance and distribution is important for us to mitigate biodiversity loss and better predict consequences for the environment and for human life. Insects are excellent models for understanding the consequences of environmental stress due to the sensitivity of their development and behavior. The overall focus of my dissertation research is the investigation of fluctuating asymmetry and oviposition behavior as indicators of environmental stress. My research includes a meta-analysis of published literature, and empirical research that was part of a collaborative initiative on understanding the ongoing ecological consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the role of timber harvest activity on insect habitat selection. Finally, with the wider availability of Internet and GPS tracking technologies, my research investigated the relative efficacy of citizen science-based research methods on tracking a region-wide ecological event through collaboration with local research institutions. I will show that fluctuating asymmetry can serve as a reliable indicator of environmental stress and provide considerations for its application. I will also show how spatial distribution of citizen reports can relate to the ecological landscape and how changes in the landscape can impact insect behavior
