What Replaced the Kolkhozes and Sovkhozes? A Political Ecology of Agricultural Change in Post-Soviet Russia

Russian agriculture underwent drastic changes after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. A large-scale collective system, with a planned economy, was expected to enter the market economy rapidly with the help of new legislation and programs. Things did not go as the central Russian government and international development organizations had planned. Instead of joining the global capitalist system, rural Russians turned to small private plots and practiced subsistence agriculture for survival. Some people attempted to start private farms but were often not successful because of a lack of capital and structural support. Other enterprises remained variations of collective farms, but without as much state support as before their productivity declined. Overall during the 1990s agricultural output fell sharply. This paper examines why Russian agriculture, specifically in rural Siberia, has thus far not been able to join the larger global market. It employs the lens of political ecology with a specific focus on the role of the Russian state and distance, both physical and political

The Evolution of Theory: A Case Study

    No full text
International attention is currently focused on alleviating health disparities through the adoption of new paradigms of research and the development of culturally relevant theories of health and illness. Yet, in spite of consistent calls to inform these deficiencies, the methodological trajectory from problem identification to theoretical development has remained relatively elusive. In this article, the authors present a case study of a systematic research methodology that resulted in a refined theory of social capital with practical relevance for health disparities research. Their purpose is to demonstrate how the stages and strategies of the hybrid model of concept development were extended as a research trajectory

Classical jazz: the life and musical innovations of Nikolai Kapustin

    No full text
This is an extended study of the historical significance, life, and music of Nikolai Kapustin, Russian composer and pianist. Kapustin's music creatively fuses the virtuosity and structure of traditional classical music with the musical language of jazz. Having composed over 147 works, including twenty piano sonatas, twenty-four preludes and fugues, and six piano concerti, he is arguably one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The study consists of three parts. The first part is an overview of the history of classical-jazz fusion and illustrates how Kapustin stands apart from composers whose music is typically categorized as "crossover" or "third stream." The second part documents Kapustin's biography and musical development throughout the various stages of his life and is the most thorough account of Kapustin's career to date. The third part presents an analysis of the combination of jazz and classical styles in two contrasting pieces: Kapustin's Sonata No. 2, Op. 54, and his Prelude and Fugue Op. 82, No. 10. As a preface, this part will also include an overview of some basic jazz compositional techniques that will help the reader understand the analyses. (Published By University of Alabama Libraries
