Measuring Regional Cohesion Effects of Large-scale Transport Infrastructure Investments: An Accessibility Approach.

    Get PDF
Cohesion is considered one of the main policy goals both at a EU an national level. However, there is currently a lack of a common approach to measure cohesion effects of large-scale transport infrastructure investments. Accessibility indicators have an unexploited potential in transportation assessment methodologies. Accessibility is considered an added value of locations, which represents one of the elements contributing to a region’s welfare. Therefore, spatial distribution of accessibility may be used as a proxy to assess regional cohesion. This paper suggests an approach consisting in measuring changes in the spatial distribution of four different accessibility indicators, computed and mapped using a GIS support. Cohesion is subsequently measured calculating a set of inequality indices of the resulting accessibility distribution. It is possible then to assess whether disparities in regional accessibility are increased or reduced after the implementation of a new transport infrastructure. This approach is tested assessing regional cohesion effects of road and rail network developments in Spain in the period 1992-2004. Comparing the results obtained with accessibility indicators and inequality indices allows identifying the main critical factors and sources of bias. The conclusion is that for the rode mode, cohesion has improved, while regional disparities have increased for the rail mode

Comparison between nested grids and unstructured grids for a high-resolution wave forecasting system in the western Mediterranean sea

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis Group in Journal of Operational Oceanography on 2017, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/1755876X.2016.1260389Traditionally wave modelling uses a downscaling process by means of successive nested grids to obtain high-resolution wave fields near the coast. This supposes an uncertain error due to internal boundary conditions and a long computational time. Unstructured grids avoid multiple meshes and thus the problem of internal boundary conditions. In the present study high resolution wave simulations are analysed for a full year where high-resolution meteorological models were available in the Catalan coast. This coastal case presents sharp gradients in bathymetry and orography and therefore correspondingly sharp variations in the wind and wave fields. Simulations with SWAN v.4091A using a traditional nested sequence and a regional unstructured grid have been compared. Also a local unstructured grid nested in an operational forecast system is included in the analysis. The obtained simulations are compared to wave observations from buoys near the coast; almost no differences are found between the unstructured grids and the regular grids. Simultaneously, tests have been carried out in order to analyse the computational time required for each of the alternatives, showing a decrease to less than half the time when working with regional unstructured grids and maintaining the forecast accuracy and coastal resolution with respect to the downscaling system.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Spent Oyster Mushroom Substrate in a Mix with Organic Soil for Plant Pot Cultivation

Disposal of spent mushroom substrates can pose a problem to the environment. The reuse in crop production by its recycling as an ingredient of growing mixes would provide an environmentally safe disposition. We show the use of Pleurotus Pleurotus sp. spent substrate, sp. spent substrate, obtained after cultivation on a sunfl ower seed hulls based substrate and mixed with organic soil from local nurseries. Salvia offi cinalis Salvia offi cinalis was used to study plant growth in was used to study plant growth in pot cultivation under greenhouse conditions. Treatments were: C, control (soil used in a local nursery); T1, soil : Pleurotus Pleurotus spent substrate (2:1 v/v); and T2, equivalent to T1, but spent substrate (2:1 v/v); and T2, equivalent to T1, but using washed Pleurotus Pleurotus spent substrate in order to reduce its salt content. T1 substrate spent substrate in order to reduce its salt content. T1 substrate had 3.3 times higher electrical conductivity (7 mS cm-1) than that of the control, which is high for the growth of most plants. Air porosity was greater in T1 (7.4%) and T2 (10.2%) than the control (2.8%). The content of certain nutrients also increased with regard to the control, such as phosphorus and sulphur (T1 and T2 substrates), as well as potassium (T1 substrate). After growing 29 days on T1 substrate, plants showed a marked increase in biomass (ca. 21%, p < 0.05) and some minerals compared to the control. T2 plants grew poorly, possibly because of nitrogen defi cit. T1 substrate was adequate to sustain the growth of S. offi cinalis S. offi cinalis plants in pots, by improving air porosity and mineral content.Fil: López Castro, Ramón Ignacio. Treballs Finals de Grau de Física, Facultat de Física, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2017, Tutors: Albert Romano Rodríguez i Guillem Domènech GilIn this work the growth and characterisation of (Ga, In)2O3 NWs obtained by a CVD using different mixtures of Ga2O3 and In2O3 are reported. The NWs have been characterised by SEM, XRD and TEM, proving their cubic crystalline nature similar to In2O3 and providing the degree of incorporation of Ga in this lattice. Furthermore, gas nanosensors based on single NWs have been fabricated and measured, proving the sensing properties of the synthesized materia

Some steps towards abolitionism in american society in the 19th century: an analysis of historical documents

    Get PDF
In this dissertation, I analyze historical documents relevant in terms of the abolition of the slavery in the United States of America in the 19th century. First, I write a summary of the history of slavery in the USA, from the first time that blacks arrived to the country in 1619, until the proclamation of the fourteenth proclamation in 1869 by which the black population is given citizenship. Later on, I realize a detailed analysis of several historical documents, of which I give historical information, draw the main and secondary ideas and finally explain the consequences and implication of the documents I have mentioned before. The majority of the documents emerged as a consequence of the preceding ones, which allow us to obtain a good idea of the steps that were taken to achieve the freedom of the African-Americans.Departamento de Filología InglesaGrado en Estudios Inglese
