Phase shifts of synchronized oscillators and the systolic/diastolic blood pressure relation
We study the phase-synchronization properties of systolic and diastolic
arterial pressure in healthy subjects. We find that delays in the oscillatory
components of the time series depend on the frequency bands that are
considered, in particular we find a change of sign in the phase shift going
from the Very Low Frequency band to the High Frequency band. This behavior
should reflect a collective behavior of a system of nonlinear interacting
elementary oscillators. We prove that some models describing such systems, e.g.
the Winfree and the Kuramoto models offer a clue to this phenomenon. For these
theoretical models there is a linear relationship between phase shifts and the
difference of natural frequencies of oscillators and a change of sign in the
phase shift naturally emerges.Comment: 8 figures, 9 page
Experimental Evidence of Time Delay Induced Death in Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators
Experimental observations of time delay induced amplitude death in a pair of
coupled nonlinear electronic circuits that are individually capable of
exhibiting limit cycle oscillations are described. In particular, the existence
of multiply connected death islands in the parameter space of the coupling
strength and the time delay parameter for coupled identical oscillators is
established. The existence of such regions was predicted earlier on theoretical
grounds in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5109 (1998); Physica 129D, 15 (1999)]. The
experiments also reveal the occurrence of multiple frequency states, frequency
suppression of oscillations with increased time delay and the onset of both

Synchronization of Integrate and Fire oscillators with global coupling
In this article we study the behavior of globally coupled assemblies of a
large number of Integrate and Fire oscillators with excitatory pulse-like
interactions. On some simple models we show that the additive effects of pulses
on the state of Integrate and Fire oscillators are sufficient for the
synchronization of the relaxations of all the oscillators. This synchronization
occurs in two forms depending on the system: either the oscillators evolve ``en
bloc'' at the same phase and therefore relax together or the oscillators do not
remain in phase but their relaxations occur always in stable avalanches. We
prove that synchronization can occur independently of the convexity or
concavity of the oscillators evolution function. Furthermore the presence of
disorder, up to some level, is not only compatible with synchronization, but
removes some possible degeneracy of identical systems and allows new mechanisms

Experimental observation of the amplitude death effect in two coupled nonlinear oscillators
The amplitude death phenomenon has been experimentally observed with a pair of thermo-optical oscillators linearly coupled by heat transfer. A parametric analysis has been done and compared with numerical simulations of a time delayed model. The role of the coupling strength is also discussed from experimental and numerical results

The frequency with which scientists fabricate and falsify data, or commit other forms of scientific misconduct is a matter of controversy. Many surveys have asked scientists directly whether they have committed or know of a colleague who committed research misconduct, but their results appeared difficult to compare and synthesize. One step forward, one step sideways? Expanding research capacity for neglected diseases
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is general agreement, including from the pharmaceutical industry, that current market based methods of generating research into the development of pharmaceutical products that are relevant for developing countries do not work. This conclusion is relevant not just for the most neglected diseases such as leishmaniasis but even for global diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Stimulating research will mean overcoming barriers such as patent thickets, poor coordination of research activities, exclusive licensing of new technologies by universities and the structural problems that inhibit conducting appropriate clinical trials in developing countries. In addition, it is necessary to ensure that the priorities for research reflect the needs of developing countries and not just donors. This article will explore each of these issues and then look at three emerging approaches to stimulating research -paying for innovation, priority review sales or vouchers and public-private partnerships, - and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>All of the stakeholders agree that there is a pressing need for a major expansion in the level of R&D. Whatever that new model turns out to be, it will have to deal with the 5 barriers outlined in this paper. Finally, none of the three proposals considered here for expanding research is free from major limitations.</p
When algorithms shape collective action: Social media and the dynamics of cloud protesting
How does the algorithmically mediated environment of social media restructure social action? This article combines social movement studies and science and technology studies to explore the role of social media in the organization, unfolding, and diffusion of contemporary protests. In particular, it examines how activists leverage the technical properties of social media to develop a joint narrative and a collective identity. To this end, it offers the notion of cloud protesting as a theoretical approach and framework for empirical analysis. Cloud protesting indicates a specific type of mobilization that is grounded on, modeled around, and enabled by social media platforms and mobile devices and the virtual universes they identify. The notion emphasizes both the productive mediation of social and mobile media and the importance of activists’ sense-making activities. It also acknowledges that social media set in motion a process that is sociotechnical in nature rather than merely sociological or communicative, and thus can be understood only by intersecting the material and the symbolic dimensions of contemporary digitally mediated collective action. The article shows how the specific materiality of social media intervenes in the actors’ meaning work by fostering four mechanisms—namely performance, interpellation, temporality, and reproducibility—which concur to create a "politics of visibility" that alters traditional identity dynamics. In addition, it exposes the connection between organizational patterns and the role of individuals, explaining how the politics of visibility is the result of a process that originates and ends within the individual—which ultimately creates individuals-in-the-group rather than groups
