Real-time hand movement trajectory tracking based on machine learning approaches may assist the early identification of dementia in ageing deaf individuals who are users of British Sign Language (BSL), since there are few clinicians with appropriate communication skills, and a shortage of sign language interpreters. In this paper, we introduce an automatic dementia screening system for ageing Deaf signers of BSL, using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to analyse the sign space envelope and facial expression of BSL signers recorded in normal 2D videos from the BSL corpus. Our approach involves the introduction of a sub-network (the multi-modal feature extractor) which includes an accurate real-time hand trajectory tracking model and a real-time landmark facial motion analysis model. The experiments show the effectiveness of our deep learning based approach in terms of sign space tracking, facial motion tracking and early stage dementia performance assessment tasks

Background: Egg allergy is potentially life-threatening. The prevalenceof egg allergy in Egypt is still unclear. This study is to evaluate thefrequency of egg hypersensitivity in a group of Egyptian atopic children. Methods: Eighty allergic children were enrolled, each is subjected toclinical evaluation, skin prick testing (SPT) using a commercial eggwhite extract, and serum egg white specific IgE (SpIgE) estimation. Sixpatients with suspected egg allergy consent to perform open oral eggchallenge. Results: Twenty-eight patients had history of exacerbation oftheir allergic diseases upon exposure to egg white, of these patients, 8had negative SPT and serum egg white SpIgE. SPT was positive in 25(31.2%) patients, of these patients, 3 (4%) were +3, 22 (28%) were +2,of whom 5 patients tolerate eggs without adverse effects. Serum eggwhite SpIgE was positive in 19 (24%) patients with a mean of 0.81 IU/ml(range: 0.35-4.52 IU/ML). Egg white allergy based on positive history, positive SPT and/or egg white SpIgE was detected in 23 (28.8%)patients. Open oral egg challenge was positive in one patient withpositive history but negative tests giving an overall frequency of eggallergy of 30 % (n=24).While egg white SpIgE did not correlate with theages, positive SPT was significantly more frequent among youngerpatients (t= 1.7, p=0.02). Egg sensitization and allergy did not affect theseverity of asthma (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Although positive SPT/ serumspecific IgE to eggs are good tools for diagnosis, oral food challengeremains the gold standard in suspected cases. Further wide-scale studiesare needed to outline the real prevalence of egg allergy in Egypt. Keywords: Egg allergy; children; skin prick test

Near surface mounted technique become the most attractive technique for strengthening RC structures. Several researches had been conducted to study experimentally the flexural behavior of RC members strengthened with NSM technique unlike the numerical researches. In this paper a numerical investigation utilizes the non-linear finite element (FE) modeling using ANSYS was performed. The developed FE model considers the behavior of the epoxy-concrete interface using a particular continuum damage approach, called cohesive zone model (CZM) which is capable of predicting the failure mode of the strengthened beams. The modified model study the effect of different parameters such as NSM bar number, NSM bar length, end inclination angle and end inclination leg length on the flexural behavior of strengthened beams. The results showed that, The developed FE model able to predict the expected modes of failure in NSM technique, the NSM bar length was effective till 0.5 of beam span, beams strengthened with end inclined angle 45º NSM bar gives the highest improvement in load carrying capacity, this improvement was very close in case of using end inclined angle of 60º and 90º

    Get PDF
__Background:__ Post molar GTN was reported to occur in 7.5-20% of patients following evacuation of complete hydatidiform moles and in 2.5-7.5% following evacuation of partial moles. The role of uterine re-curettage in post molar GTN is not clear. __Objectives:__ Study of the correlation of pre-evacuation and week- one level of hCG, and uterine re-curettage to the number of chemotherapy courses in treatment of post molar GTN. __Patients and methods:__ This retrospective study included 29 cases of post molar GTN through reviewing their medical records. Results: There were 25 cases (86.21) of low risk, and 4 cases of high risk score (13.79%). The 3 year survival was 96.6%. There were non-significant correlation of age, parity, pre-evacuation level and hCG in week-1 to number of chemotherapy courses, while uterine recurettage was significantly correlated to number of chemotherapy courses (p=0.04). __Conclusion:__ Uterine re-curettage was significantly correlated to less number of chemotherapy courses in patients with post molar GTN (p=0.04). Pre-evacuation and week-1 hCG were not correlated to number of chemotherapy cycles. A large prospective randomized trial to clarify the beneficial effect of uterine re-curettage is recommended

A visual Analytics System for Optimizing Communications in Massively Parallel Applications

Current and future supercomputers have tens of thousands of compute nodes interconnected with high-dimensional networks and complex network topologies for improved performance. Application developers are required to write scalable parallel programs in order to achieve high throughput on these machines. Application performance is largely determined by efficient inter-process communication. A common way to analyze and optimize performance is through profiling parallel codes to identify communication bottlenecks. However, understanding gigabytes of profile data is not a trivial task. In this paper, we present a visual analytics system for identifying the scalability bottlenecks and improving the communication efficiency of massively parallel applications. Visualization methods used in this system are designed to comprehend large-scale and varied communication patterns on thousands of nodes in complex networks such as the 5D torus and the dragonfly. We also present efficient rerouting and remapping algorithms that can be coupled with our interactive visual analytics design for performance optimization. We demonstrate the utility of our system with several case studies using three benchmark applications on two leading supercomputers. The mapping suggestion from our system led to 38% improvement in hop-bytes for MiniAMR application on 4,096 MPI processes. This research has been sponsored in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation through grant IIS-1320229, and the U.S. Department of Energy through grants DE-SC0012610 and DE-SC0014917. (1) Background: The overdenture is a complete denture, an implant-supported prosthesis, that the patient can remove at home for the usual oral hygiene procedures, thanks to a simple and intuitive anchoring system. Clinically, the execution of this rehabilitation for the lower arch is often favored, but when it is necessary to limit the extension of the palate in the upper arch, it can represent the least invasive and economic solution. The aim of the study is to analyze post-loading implant loss for implant-supported prostheses in the edentulous upper jaw. (2) Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on patients who received a superior overdenture on four implants for rehabilitation. A total of 42 patients were included in this study and initially evaluated clinically and radiographically. The follow-up period for patients after delivery of the upper overdenture is between 48 and 72 months. A total of 168 implants were inserted and monitored in this period. Clinical and radiographic tests were carried out on all 168 implants, with constant re-evaluation. (3) Results: The overall implant survival rate is 92.9%, a value that corresponds to those present in the literature in previously published studies. There were few prosthetic complications, mainly the detachment of anterior prosthetic teeth. (4) Conclusions: Most of these complete prostheses, which as antagonist had another previously made overdenture on four or on two implants, achieved excellent success rates in this study at 72 months

Evaluating Gradient Perception in Color-Coded Scalar Fields

    Get PDF
Color mapping is a commonly used technique for visualizing scalar fields. While there exists advice for choosing effective colormaps, it is unclear if current guidelines apply equally across task types. We study the perception of gradients and evaluate the effectiveness of three colormaps at depicting gradient magnitudes. In a crowd-sourced experiment, we determine the just-noticeable differences (JNDs) at which participants can reliably compare and judge variations in gradient between two scalar fields. We find that participants exhibited lower JNDs with a diverging (cool-warm) or a spectral (rainbow) scheme, as compared with a monotonic-luminance colormap (viridis). The results support a hypothesis that apparent discontinuities in the color ramp may help viewers discern subtle structural differences in gradient. We discuss these findings and highlight future research directions for colormap evaluation
