Alternative Venues: An EFL Writing Center Outside the University

    Get PDF
Recent years have seen an increasing presence of writing centers in diverse English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings, particularly in East Asia and in Europe (Bräuer; Chang). These new centers face familiar issues such as a lack of resources, the need to adapt pedagogy to the local context (Reichelt et. al.; Broekhoff), and ideological resistance to the idea of peer learning (Turner) or even providing support for writing at all (Bräuer). In some cases, these difficulties may force potential writing centers to seek a platform entirely outside of the university, bringing both challenges and new possibilities as the center adapts to a community setting and clientele (Rousculp). This article describes the founding of a writing center in Niš, Serbia, in an alternative venue - an American Embassy-funded resource center. This institution has offered significant advantages, including a central location and strong preexisting member base, but it has also shifted the writing center’s focus away from university students towards the diverse writing needs of the broader community. This article discusses how these factors have affected the writing center’s mission, the tutors’ training and experiences, and the development of local pedagogy and concludes with suggestions for other writing center administrators on working in such alternative spaces.University Writing Cente

This paper considers the essence, significance and necessity of application of the marketing approach, i.e. planning, organizing and control of marketing activities in tourist and rural tourist policy, intending to add to competitiveness of the tourism offer in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The paper elaborates theoretic and substantial aspects of marketing element in tourism and rural tourism, with a special view on importance and contribution of marketing approach in competitiveness of tourism and rural tourism offer in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The marketing approach in tourism and rural tourism, presented in this work, may serve as a basis for creating policy and developing marketing approach in B&H tourism and rural tourism.marketing, tourism, rural tourism, conceptual model of tourism development, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Agribusiness, Community/Rural/Urban Development,

Feshbach resonant scattering of three fermions in one-dimensional wells

We study the weak-tunnelling limit for a system of cold 40K atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice close to an s-wave Feshbach resonance. We calculate the local spectrum for three atoms at one site of the lattice within a two-channel model. Our results indicate that, for this one-dimensional system, one- and two-channel models will differ close to the Feshbach resonance, although the two theories would converge in the limit of strong Feshbach coupling. We also find level crossings in the low-energy spectrum of a single well with three atoms that may lead to quantum phase transition for an optical lattice of many wells. We discuss the stability of the system to a phase with non-uniform density.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Diboson studies at CMS

Measurements of diboson processes in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7TeV and 8TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC are summarized. Inclusive cross section measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes ZZ → 2l2l', Wγ → lνγ, Zγ → llγ, Zγ → ννγ, W+W− → lνlν, and the semileptonic decay mode WW + WZ → lνjj, where l = e, μ and l' = e, μ, τ . Cross section for ZZ (W+W−) production is measured at √s = 7TeV and 8TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1 (4.9 fb−1) and 5.3 fb−1 (3.5 fb−1√ ), respectively. Production of Wγ, Zγ, Zγ, and WW+WZ are measured at √s = 7TeV using data of 5.0 fb−1. A search for exclusive or quasi-exclusive W+W− production by two-photon exchange in the leptonic decay mode WW → eνμν, at √s = 7TeV is performed using data of 5.0 fb−1. All measured cross sections are in agreement with NLO expectations. Inclusive diboson channels are used to extract upper limits on anomalous WWγ, WWZ, ZZγ, Zγγ, ZZZ trilinear gauge couplings. Limits on charged couplings are competitive to limits provided by previous experiments while neutral couplings limits are few times more precise. Exclusive W+W− channel is used to extract the limits on anomalous γγWW quartic gauge coupling, set at the LHC for the first time and resulting in the sensitivity two orders of magnitude better then limits provided by LEP experiments

A lunar far-side very low frequency array

Papers were presented to consider very low frequency (VLF) radio astronomical observations from the moon. In part 1, the environment in which a lunar VLF radio array would function is described. Part 2 is a review of previous and proposed low-frequency observatories. The science that could be conducted with a lunar VLF array is described in part 3. The design of a lunar VLF array and site selection criteria are considered, respectively, in parts 4 and 5. Part 6 is a proposal for precursor lunar VLF observations. Finally, part 7 is a summary and statement of conclusions, with suggestions for future science and engineering studies. The workshop concluded with a general consensus on the scientific goals and preliminary design for a lunar VLF array
