Including the most vulnerable : social funds and people with disabilities

    Get PDF
People with disabilities face many of the challenges that other vulnerable groups face, such as lack of adequate support services in their communities, lack of resources and economic opportunities, and physical and attitudinal barriers to their participating fully in society. One of the best-established World Bank instruments for targeting poor, and vulnerable groups is social funds. The authors review the extent of current disability activities within World Bank-financed social funds, and provide recommendations, and resources for increasing support for persons with disabilities in social fund subprojects. Among other initiatives, social funds can provide infrastructure, and services that people with disabilities can use, support organizations that help persons with disabilities formulate, and demand projects, and promote greater public understanding of disability issues.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Social Cohesion,Social Protections&Assistance,Community Development and Empowerment,ICT Policy and Strategies

Darstellung des Begriffs Toleranz im Deutschen und im Polnischen aus Frame-semantischer Perspektive

    Get PDF
The principal aim of this article is to create a cognitive holistic definition of ‘tolerance’ in Polish and in German based on the approach of the Frame Semantics according to Alexander Ziem (2008). The theory relies on the concept “frame”, understood as a cognitive structure facilitating the understanding of linguistic meaning. The semantic frame consists of “slots” and instances of slots, namely “default values” and “fillers”. The empirical material includes two types of data: selected dictionary definitions of “tolerance” and some press article con-taining this notion. It has been carried out a survey among the Polish and the German native speakers to evaluate the particular meaning aspects of “tolerance” i. e. to distinguish between the default values and the fillers of the Frame TOLERANCE

Investigating Cranial Variation in Japanese Populations Using Geometric Morphometrics

    Get PDF
The Japanese archipelago exhibits an immense amount of variation in culture and history, despite the lay population mostly considering the modern Japanese a homogeneous population. Japan has experienced an amazing amount migration activity. These migration events are well represented in the archaeological record and have provided fodder for hypotheses proposed for peopling of the new world. Biological anthropologists have tested hypotheses surrounding the initial peopling of the islands using linear data in conjunction with non-metric traits of the skull. Recent molecular studies have provided evidence for population substructure, which suggests an original founding group of North Asian descent, and a more recent migration into Southern Japan from the Korean peninsula. The secondary migration interbred with the indigenous Jomon inhabitants, ultimately giving rise to two distinct genetic lineages. An examination of a variety of skeletal collections from a range of temporal and regional samples in Japan allows for an expansion of hypotheses proposed by previous research to explain the range of variation observed through time and space in Japan. This study aims to build upon research endeavors that have quantified various aspects of skeletal morphology represented in Japan. This study reexamines the majority of analyses that have used metric data by using three dimensional data (3D). 3D or coordinate data can be used to better identify evolutionary patterns in biological populations via geometric morphometric approaches. Samples utilized represents skeletal collections of a nearly temporally continuous sequence that encompasses the indigenous Jomon culture that dates to 10,000 BP to the modern period. Results highlight the utility of comparisons of various types of data that represent morphological variation. It is argued that 3D data can provide novel results and thus the reexamination of a host of hypothesis that examine morphology of the cranium is warranted

Embeddings and immersions of tropical curves

We construct immersions of trivalent abstract tropical curves in the Euclidean plane and embeddings of all abstract tropical curves in higher dimensional Euclidean space. Since not all curves have an embedding in the plane, we define the tropical crossing number of an abstract tropical curve to be the minimum number of self-intersections, counted with multiplicity, over all its immersions in the plane. We show that the tropical crossing number is at most quadratic in the number of edges and this bound is sharp. For curves of genus up to two, we systematically compute the crossing number. Finally, we use our immersed tropical curves to construct totally faithful nodal algebraic curves via lifting results of Mikhalkin and Shustin.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, final submitted versio

The Impact of Sauna on Health

    Get PDF
This review examines the health implications of regular sauna use, a tradition deeply rooted in Finnish culture now gaining global interest for its potential health benefits. It consolidates findings from various scientific studies, emphasizing the physiological and health impacts of traditional sauna practices on cardiovascular health, mental well-being, and overall mortality. The review highlights the positive cardiovascular outcomes associated with regular sauna use, such as reduced risks of hypertension, coronary artery disease, and sudden cardiac death, attributing these benefits to improved endothelial function, decreased arterial stiffness, and positive changes in blood pressure. Additionally, sauna bathing is shown to offer mental health benefits by reducing stress, depression, anxiety levels, and possibly lowering the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia. Despite the substantial benefits, the review also acknowledges potential risks, especially for individuals with specific health conditions, underscoring the importance of hydration and caution against alcohol consumption before sauna sessions. Conclusively, the evidence supports the integration of sauna bathing into health promotion strategies, with a call for further research to explore the mechanisms underlying its health benefits and to develop guidelines for optimizing these benefits while minimizing risks. Sauna bathing emerges as a promising, non-invasive approach to enhancing overall health and well-being, warranting its consideration in complementary health practices

At the Crossroads of Gender, Power and Audiovisual Culture: Female Politicians and Businesswomen as Represented in Polish Cinema after 1989

    Get PDF
Contemporary discourse on gender equality in the mass media focuses primarily on analysing news programmes, TV series and advertisements. However, films also constitute powerful cultural stimuli, capable of modifying the attitudes and behaviour of both audiences and the society as a whole. The strength and longevity of their impact lie in their deep roots in the culture in which they operate. For cinematic representations of women and men, this process implies the need to constantly refer to a certain stock of conventions, cultural stereotypes and ways of thinking about gender present in the mentality and social structures of a given community. The same applies to images of women in power in film, which on the one hand are determined by cultural patterns attributed to each gender, while on the other they themselves contribute to their perpetuation in the social consciousness, at the same time creating social images of relations between gender and power in political and economic life. The article discusses this phenomenon in relation to selected Polish films after 1989. The paper will analyse how the roles and behavioural patterns attributed to women were (re)defined in the (changing) public sphere and what the position of characters representing these characteristics was in the narrative of the films
