    Seeing with New Eyes: Developing Visual Literacy in the Sciences

    With the widespread availability of digital photography, we have failed to really capture this readily accessible tool and integrate it into student learning in the sciences, or use it as a means to encourage connections as students move from novice towards more expert thinking within their discipline. In the use of digital photography by students in a disciplinary context, expertise can increase as students must (1) first understand what they are seeing, (2) make the connection to their class material, and (3) be able to justify their choice and clarify their assumptions. In particular, the connection-making process together with justification through clarifying assumptions, are facets of expert-thinking that commonly differ from the thinking of novices. Students photographing subject material creates a novel way to facilitate such meaning-making and communication, and serves as a way to move the thinking outside the classroom box. This session will explore a number of possible ways to integrate photography and other visual imagery such as videos, diagrams, sketches, and maps, into student learning. We will look at how we might use photography and other imagery to encourage writing and discussion, provide an out-of-classroom learning opportunity for our students, encourage students to generate questions, and even use photography to evaluate student learning. This interactive session invites participants to explore ways to actively engage students in learning both inside and outside the classroom while developing students’ visual literacy, and enhancing communication skills using visuals.     Relevance Prediction from Eye-movements Using Semi-interpretable Convolutional Neural Networks

    We propose an image-classification method to predict the perceived-relevance of text documents from eye-movements. An eye-tracking study was conducted where participants read short news articles, and rated them as relevant or irrelevant for answering a trigger question. We encode participants' eye-movement scanpaths as images, and then train a convolutional neural network classifier using these scanpath images. The trained classifier is used to predict participants' perceived-relevance of news articles from the corresponding scanpath images. This method is content-independent, as the classifier does not require knowledge of the screen-content, or the user's information-task. Even with little data, the image classifier can predict perceived-relevance with up to 80% accuracy. When compared to similar eye-tracking studies from the literature, this scanpath image classification method outperforms previously reported metrics by appreciable margins. We also attempt to interpret how the image classifier differentiates between scanpaths on relevant and irrelevant documents

    We are all one together : peer educators\u27 views about falls prevention education for community-dwelling older adults - a qualitative study

    Background: Falls are common in older people. Despite strong evidence for effective falls prevention strategies, there appears to be limited translation of these strategies from research to clinical practice. Use of peers in delivering falls prevention education messages has been proposed to improve uptake of falls prevention strategies and facilitate translation to practice. Volunteer peer educators often deliver educational presentations on falls prevention to community-dwelling older adults. However, research evaluating the effectiveness of peer-led education approaches in falls prevention has been limited and no known study has evaluated such a program from the perspective of peer educators involved in delivering the message. The purpose of this study was to explore peer educators’ perspective about their role in delivering peer-led falls prevention education for community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A two-stage qualitative inductive constant comparative design was used.In stage one (core component) focus group interviews involving a total of eleven participants were conducted. During stage two (supplementary component) semi-structured interviews with two participants were conducted. Data were analysed thematically by two researchers independently. Key themes were identified and findings were displayed in a conceptual framework. Results: Peer educators were motivated to deliver educational presentations and importantly, to reach an optimal peer connection with their audience. Key themes identified included both personal and organisational factors that impact on educators’ capacity to facilitate their peers’ engagement with the message. Personal factors that facilitated message delivery and engagement included peer-to-peer connection and perceived credibility, while barriers included a reluctance to accept the message that they were at risk of falling by some members in the audience. Organisational factors, including ongoing training for peer educators and formative feedback following presentations, were perceived as essential because they affect successful message delivery. Conclusions: Peer educators have the potential to effectively deliver falls prevention education to older adults and influence acceptance of the message as they possess the peer-to-peer connection that facilitates optimal engagement. There is a need to consider incorporating learnings from this research into a formal large scale evaluation of the effectiveness of the peer education approach in reducing falls in older adults

    Tumor innate immunity primed by specific interferon-stimulated endogenous retroviruses.

    Mesenchymal tumor subpopulations secrete pro-tumorigenic cytokines and promote treatment resistance1-4. This phenomenon has been implicated in chemorefractory small cell lung cancer and resistance to targeted therapies5-8, but remains incompletely defined. Here, we identify a subclass of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) that engages innate immune signaling in these cells. Stimulated 3 prime antisense retroviral coding sequences (SPARCS) are oriented inversely in 3' untranslated regions of specific genes enriched for regulation by STAT1 and EZH2. Derepression of these loci results in double-stranded RNA generation following IFN-γ exposure due to bi-directional transcription from the STAT1-activated gene promoter and the 5' long terminal repeat of the antisense ERV. Engagement of MAVS and STING activates downstream TBK1, IRF3, and STAT1 signaling, sustaining a positive feedback loop. SPARCS induction in human tumors is tightly associated with major histocompatibility complex class 1 expression, mesenchymal markers, and downregulation of chromatin modifying enzymes, including EZH2. Analysis of cell lines with high inducible SPARCS expression reveals strong association with an AXL/MET-positive mesenchymal cell state. While SPARCS-high tumors are immune infiltrated, they also exhibit multiple features of an immune-suppressed microenviroment. Together, these data unveil a subclass of ERVs whose derepression triggers pathologic innate immune signaling in cancer, with important implications for cancer immunotherapy

    Increased B Cell ADAM10 in Allergic Patients and Th2 Prone Mice

    ADAM10, as the sheddase of the low affinity IgE receptor (CD23), promotes IgE production and thus is a unique target for attenuating allergic disease. Herein, we describe that B cell levels of ADAM10, specifically, are increased in allergic patients and Th2 prone WT mouse strains (Balb/c and A/J). While T cell help augments ADAM10 expression, Balb WT B cells exhibit increased ADAM10 in the naïve state and even more dramatically increased ADAM10 after anti-CD40/IL4 stimulation compared C57 (Th1 prone) WT B cells. Furthermore, ADAM17 and TNF are reduced in allergic patients and Th2 prone mouse strains (Balb/c and A/J) compared to Th1 prone controls. To further understand this regulation, ADAM17 and TNF were studied in C57Bl/6 and Balb/c mice deficient in ADAM10. C57-ADAM10B-/- were more adept at increasing ADAM17 levels and thus TNF cleavage resulting in excess follicular TNF levels and abnormal secondary lymphoid tissue architecture not noted in Balb-ADAM10B-/-. Moreover, the level of B cell ADAM10 as well as Th context is critical for determining IgE production potential. Using a murine house dust mite airway hypersensitivity model, we describe that high B cell ADAM10 level in a Th2 context (Balb/c WT) is optimal for disease induction including bronchoconstriction, goblet cell metaplasia, mucus, inflammatory cellular infiltration, and IgE production. Balb/c mice deficient in B cell ADAM10 have attenuated lung and airway symptoms compared to Balb WT and are actually most similar to C57 WT (Th1 prone). C57-ADAM10B-/- have even further reduced symptomology. Taken together, it is critical to consider both innate B cell levels of ADAM10 and ADAM17 as well as Th context when determining host susceptibility to allergic disease. High B cell ADAM10 and low ADAM17 levels would help diagnostically in predicting Th2 disease susceptibility; and, we provide support for the use ADAM10 inhibitors in treating Th2 disease

    Nursing home administrators’ perspectives on a study feedback report : a cross sectional survey

    BackgroundThis project is part of the Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) program of research, a multi-level and longitudinal research program being conducted in 36 nursing homes in three Canadian Prairie Provinces. The overall goal of TREC is to improve the quality of care for older persons living in nursing homes and the quality of work life for care providers. The purpose of this paper is to report on development and evaluation of facility annual reports (FARs) from facility administrators&rsquo; perspectives on the usefulness, meaningfulness, and understandability of selected data from the TREC survey. MethodsA cross sectional survey design was used in this study. The feedback reports were developed in collaboration with participating facility administrators. FARs presented results in four contextual areas: workplace culture, feedback processes, job satisfaction, and staff burnout. Six weeks after FARs were mailed to each administrator, we conducted structured telephone interviews with administrators to elicit their evaluation of the FARs. Administrators were also asked if they had taken any actions as a result of the FAR. Descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as content analysis for open-ended questions, were used to summarize findings. ResultsThirty-one facility administrators (representing thirty-two facilities) participated in the interviews. Six administrators had taken action and 18 were planning on taking action as a result of FARs. The majority found the four contextual areas addressed in FAR to be useful, meaningful, and understandable. They liked the comparisons made between data from years one and two and between their facility and other TREC study sites in their province. Twenty-two indicated that they would like to receive information on additional areas such as aggressive behaviours of residents and information sharing. Twenty-four administrators indicated that FARs contained enough information, while eight found FARs &lsquo;too short&rsquo;. Administrators who reported that the FAR contained enough information were more likely to take action within their facilities than administrators who reported that they needed more information. ConclusionsAlthough the FAR was brief, the presentation of the four contextual areas was relevant to the majority of administrators and prompted them to plan or to take action within their facility. <br /

    Inferior outcome after hip resurfacing arthroplasty than after conventional arthroplasty: Evidence from the Nordic Arthroplasty Register Association (NARA) database, 1995 to 2007

    Today, total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one of the safest and most efficient surgical treatments. New materials, surgical techniques and design concepts intended to improve THA have not always been successful. Thorough preclinical and early clinical investigations can detect some aspects of under-performing, while continuing surveillance is recommended to detect and analyze reasons for any later appearing flaws. In this thesis, several ways to monitor and assess THA performance are explored and carried out, using survival analysis in registry studies, radiostereometry (RSA), radiology and clinical outcome. In Paper I, a study using the Nordic Arthroplasty Register Association (NARA) registry shows that HRA had an almost 3-fold increased early non-septic revision risk and that risk factors were found to be female sex, certain HRA designs and units having performed few HRA procedures. Papers II and III contain comparisons of highly cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and conventional polyethylene (PE). XLPE had a considerably lower wear rate up to 10 years but showed no obvious improvements regarding implant fixation, BMD or clinical outcome. In the NARA registry, in 2 of 4 studied cup designs the XLPE version had a lower risk of revision for aseptic loosening compared to the PE version. Paper IV describes that stem subsidence and retrotorsion measured with RSA at 2 years predicted later aseptic stem failure in an unfavorably altered, previously well-functioning cemented femoral stem. In Paper V and VI, a novel approach to measure articulation wear with RSA in radiodense hip arthroplasty articulations was presented and evaluated. Subsequently, a comparison between ceramic-on-ceramic (COC) and metal-on-conventional PE uncemented THA displayed a considerably lower wear rate, smaller periacetabular bone lesions and a relatively high squeaking rate, the latter with unknown long-term consequences, in the COC hips. Implant fixation, heterotopic ossification and clinical outcome did not differ between articulation types. In conclusion, it was confirmed that implant surveillance can be done with RSA, also in radiodense THA. Early migration predicts later aseptic implant failure. Prolonged surveillance can confirm long-term material and design performance, verify or contradict anticipated advantages as well as detect unanticipated long-term complications
