Isolated Photon Cross Sections and Nuclear Modification Factor in √sNN = 5.02 TeV pp and p–Pb with ALICE

Prompt photons, produced via QCD Compton scattering or quark and anti-quark annihilation at leading order, are unique probes to study QCD processes since they do not interact strongly and therefore allow to control the dynamics of the initial hard parton scattering. Isolated photon production in pp collisions is one of the most clear tests of perturbative QCD processes and parton distribution functions. Photon measurement in p–A collisions provides the opportunity to measure possible modifications of the nucleon structure function in nuclei. ALICE has measured isolated photons at low pT, thus extending previous measurements down to small x. In this thesis, the cross section of isolated photons for the range 12 GeV/c < pT < 60 GeV/c is presented in pp and p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV along with photon nuclear modification factor (RpPb)

Isolated photon production in pp collisions is one of the most clear tests of hard QCD processes and proton structure functions. Their measurement in pA collisions provides the possiblity to check initial geometrical scaling and possible modifications of the nucleon structure function in nuclei. Furthermore, the isolated photons constrain the kinematics of scattered partons and therefore, the measurement of isolated photon-hadron correlations has some advantages in the extraction of parton fragmentation function in pp and pA collisions. ALICE collected data on pp and p-Pb collisions at several colliding energies. Thanks to the low material budget, ALICE is able to measure isolated photons down to relatively small $p_{\rm T} \sim 10$ GeV/$c$, thus probing structure functions down to small $x$. In this talk, the isolated photon spectra measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 7 TeV will be presented and compared to those in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. By constructing the nuclear modification factor even stronger constraints on the geometrical model and the amount of modification of nucleon structure functions in nuclei can be provided due to partial error cancelation. Additionally, the isolated photon-hadron correlations in pp and p-Pb collisions will be presented and contrasted with the corresponding fragmentation functions and jet-hadron correlations at the LHC

First study of the two-body scattering involving charm hadrons

This Letter presents the first measurement of the interaction between charm hadrons and nucleons. The two-particle momentum correlations of $\mathrm{pD^-}$ and $\mathrm{\overline{p}D}^+$ pairs are measured by the ALICE Collaboration in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\mathrm{TeV}$. The data are compatible with the Coulomb-only interaction hypothesis within (1.1-1.5)$\sigma$. Considering an attractive nucleon(N)$\overline{\mathrm{D}}$ strong interaction, in contrast to most model predictions which suggest an overall repulsive interaction, slightly improves the level of agreement. This measurement allows for the first time an estimation of the 68% confidence level interval for the isospin $\mathrm{I}=0$ inverse scattering length of the $\mathrm{N\overline{D}}$ state ${f_{0,~\mathrm{I}=0}^{-1} \in [-0.4,0.9]~\mathrm{fm^{-1}}}$, assuming negligible interaction for the isospin $\mathrm{I}=1$ channel

Observation of medium-induced yield enhancement and acoplanarity broadening of low-pTp_\mathrm{T} jets from measurements in pp and central Pb−-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV

International audienceThe ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high $p_{\rm T}$) hadron trigger in proton$-$proton and central Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb$-$Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter $R=0.2$, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range $7 < p_{\rm T,jet} < 140$ GeV$/c$ and trigger$-$recoil jet azimuthal separation $\pi/2 < \Delta\varphi < \pi$. The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low $p_{\rm T}$ and at large azimuthal deviation from $\Delta\varphi\sim\pi$. The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on $\Delta\varphi$, which has a slope that differs from zero by 4.7$\sigma$. Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. These comparisons indicate that the observed yield enhancement arises from the response of the QGP medium to jet propagation

Charged-particle production as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp, p−-Pb, and Pb−-Pb collisions at the LHC

International audienceMeasurements of charged-particle production in pp, p$-$Pb, and Pb$-$Pb collisions in the toward, away, and transverse regions with the ALICE detector are discussed. These regions are defined event-by-event relative to the azimuthal direction of the charged trigger particle, which is the reconstructed particle with the largest transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\rm trig}$) in the range $8<p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\rm trig}<15$ GeV$/c$. The toward and away regions contain the primary and recoil jets, respectively; both regions are accompanied by the underlying event (UE). In contrast, the transverse region perpendicular to the direction of the trigger particle is dominated by the so-called UE dynamics, and includes also contributions from initial- and final-state radiation. The relative transverse activity classifier, $R_{\mathrm{T}}=N_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}}/\langle N_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}}\rangle$, is used to group events according to their UE activity, where $N_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}}$ is the charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse region and $\langle N_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}}\rangle$ is the mean value over the whole analysed sample. The energy dependence of the $R_{\mathrm{T}}$ distributions in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$, 5.02, 7, and 13 TeV is reported, exploring the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling properties of the multiplicity distributions. The first measurements of charged-particle $p_{\rm T}$ spectra as a function of $R_{\mathrm{T}}$ in the three azimuthal regions in pp, p$-$Pb, and Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV are also reported. Data are compared with predictions obtained from the event generators PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC. This set of measurements is expected to contribute to the understanding of the origin of collective-like effects in small collision systems (pp and p$-$Pb)

Modification of charged-particle jets in event-shape engineered Pb−-Pb collisions at sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5 TeV

International audienceCharged-particle jet yields have been measured in semicentral Pb$-$Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. These yields are reported as a function of the jet transverse momentum, and further classified by their angle with respect to the event plane and the event shape, characterized by ellipticity, in an effort to study the path-length dependence of jet quenching. Jets were reconstructed at midrapidity from charged-particle tracks using the anti-$k_{\rm T}$ algorithm with resolution parameters $R =$ 0.2 and 0.4, with event-plane angle and event-shape values determined using information from forward scintillating detectors. The results presented in this letter show that, in semicentral Pb$-$Pb collisions, there is no significant difference between jet yields in predominantly isotropic and elliptical events. However, out-of-plane jets are observed to be more suppressed than in-plane jets. Further, this relative suppression is greater for low transverse momentum ($<$ 50 GeV/$c$) $R =$ 0.2 jets produced in elliptical events, with out-of-plane to in-plane jet-yield ratios varying up to 5.2$\sigma$ between different event-shape classes. These results agree with previous studies indicating that jets experience azimuthally anisotropic suppression when traversing the QGP medium, and can provide additional constraints on the path-length dependence of jet energy loss

Measurement of the production of charm jets tagged with D0^{0} mesons in pp collisions at s \sqrt{s} = 5.02 and 13 TeV

International audienceThe measurement of the production of charm jets, identified by the presence of a D$^{0}$ meson in the jet constituents, is presented in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The D$^{0}$ mesons were reconstructed from their hadronic decay D$^{0}$ → K$^{−}$π$^{+}$ and the respective charge conjugate. Jets were reconstructed from D$^{0}$-meson candidates and charged particles using the anti-k$_{T}$ algorithm, in the jet transverse momentum range 5 < p$_{T,chjet}$< 50 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η$_{jet}$| < 0.9 − R, and with the jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6. The distribution of the jet momentum fraction carried by a D$^{0}$ meson along the jet axis $\left({z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}}\right)$ was measured in the range 0.4 <${z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}}$< 1.0 in four ranges of the jet transverse momentum. Comparisons of results for different collision energies and jet resolution parameters are also presented. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. A generally good description of the main features of the data is obtained in spite of a few discrepancies at low p$_{T,chjet}$. Measurements were also done for R = 0.3 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and are shown along with their comparisons to theoretical predictions in an appendix to this paper.[graphic not available: see fulltext

A new laboratory to study hadron-hadron interactions

One of the big challenges for nuclear physics today is to understand, starting from first principles, the effective interaction between hadrons with different quark content. First successes have been achieved utilizing techniques to solve the dynamics of quarks and gluons on discrete space-time lattices. Experimentally, the dynamics of the strong interaction have been studied by scattering hadrons off each other. Such scattering experiments are difficult or impossible for unstable hadrons and hence, high quality measurements exist only for hadrons containing up and down quarks. In this work, we demonstrate that measuring correlations in the momentum space between hadron pairs produced in ultrarelativistic proton-proton collisions at the CERN LHC provides a precise method to obtain the missing information on the interaction dynamics between any pair of unstable hadrons. Specifically, we discuss the case of the interaction of baryons containing strange quarks (hyperons). We demonstrate for the first time how, using precision measurements of p-$\Omega^{-}$ correlations, the effect of the strong interaction for this hadron-hadron pair can be studied and compared with predictions from lattice calculations
