Seismic Analysis and Strengthening of Mallorca Cathedral
Due to the complexity associated with the seismic action, as well as the dynamic properties of the structures, the design of historical buildings only took into account static actions. Depending on the seismicity of the site, the buildings are characterized by more or less constructive details adopted in order to prevent important damages due to seismic action.
Therefore, the seismic analysis of Mallorca Cathedral is carried out in the present work. The typical damages arising from seismic activity in historical buildings are caused by single architectonic parts that are characterized by an autonomous structural behaviour than the rest of the building. These local mechanisms, which are likely to develop during an earthquake, are individualized with respect to Mallorca Cathedral within this thesis.
The seismic analysis of Mallorca Cathedral comprises the individual analysis of each one of the considered local mechanisms. The nonlinear structural behaviour is obtained through limit analysis and the performance point is obtained though the capacity spectrum method. The results obtained for each local mechanism are its safety condition and, in the case of the safety being assured, the damage level that may be expected. A specific procedure developed for the analysis of historical structures that is recommended in the Italian code is used.
The seismic demand of Mallorca Cathedral considered within this thesis corresponds to several spectrums obtained from the European and Spanish codes and the detailed seismic hazard evaluation of the cathedral carried out in a previous work. This evaluation comprised deterministic and probabilistic estimations of the seismic action that may be expected in the site. In order to reduce the damage level or to assure the safety of the local mechanisms, strengthening solutions are proposed in order to improve the seismic behaviour of Mallorca Cathedral. The mainprinciples and criteria for conservation and restoration of historical structures are respected
Effects of fatigue and time-out on physiological, time-motion indicators and in patterns of spatial organization of the teams in basketball
The aim of this study was to identify the effects of fatigue on physiological variables, time-motion indicators and patterns of spatial organization of the teams in basketball. The study sample consisted of 10 basketball players of the under-18 with a mean age of 17.5 ± 0.3 years. There were two sessions: session a) game continuous (C1) 10 minutes - yo-yo intermittent recovery test (level 1) - 1 minute timeout - game continuous (C2) 10 minutes. Session b) game interrupted (I1) 5 minutes - 1 minute timeout - 5 minutes game - yo-yo intermittent recovery test (level 1) -1 minute timeout -game interrupted (I2) - 5 minutes - 1 minute timeout - 5 minutes game. HR values were determinate by the YYIRTL1 and registered by short range radiotelemetry heart-rate monitors (Polar Team System, Polar Electro, Finland), time-motion analysis were registered with GPS (SPI Elite. GPSports Systems, Australia), and a digital camera was used to record the game. The results suggest that the fatigue and the time-outs promote betters patterns of spatial organization. Additionally the results showed that with the accumulated fatigue the players covered a less total distance and in a slower way
Quantum Error Correction via Noise Guessing Decoding
Quantum error correction codes (QECCs) play a central role both in quantum
communications and in quantum computation, given how error-prone quantum
technologies are. Practical quantum error correction codes, such as stabilizer
codes, are generally structured to suit a specific use, and present rigid code
lengths and code rates, limiting their adaptability to changing requirements.
This paper shows that it is possible to both construct and decode QECCs that
can attain the maximum performance of the finite blocklength regime, for any
chosen code length and when the code rate is sufficiently high. A recently
proposed strategy for decoding classical codes called GRAND (guessing random
additive noise decoding) opened doors to decoding classical random linear codes
(RLCs) that perform near the capacity of the finite blocklength regime. By
making use of the noise statistics, GRAND is a noise-centric efficient
universal decoder for classical codes, providing there is a simple code
membership test. These conditions are particularly suitable for quantum systems
and therefore the paper extends these concepts to quantum random linear codes
(QRLCs), which were known to be possible to construct but whose decoding was
not yet feasible. By combining QRLCs and a newly proposed quantum GRAND, this
paper shows that decoding versatile quantum error correction is possible,
allowing for QECCs that are simple to adapt on the fly to changing conditions.
The paper starts by assessing the minimum number of gates in the coding circuit
needed to reach the QRLCs' asymptotic performance, and subsequently proposes a
quantum GRAND algorithm that makes use of quantum noise statistics, not only to
build an adaptive code membership test, but also to efficiently implement
syndrome decoding
