Where the headquarters are – evidence from large public companies 1990-2000

This paper examines the location of headquarter growth of large public companies during the 1990s. Headquarters continue to be attracted by large metropolitan areas. Yet among that group they continue to disperse into medium-sized centers. This paper identifies 6 different categories of gross flows underlying the net change of headquarters observed during the 90s. There is strong variation among the 50 largest metro areas in terms of the composition of these gross flows. On average, entry and exit represent over 2/3 of all gross flow activity. Pure relocation of headquarters is found to lead to urbanization. Mergers tend to not impact the distributing of headquarters across MSAs. A binomial probability model of the decision to move utilizes company-level as well as MSA- level data and finds that MSA-level amenities impact the choice to move.Industrial location ; Metropolitan areas - Statistics

The Economic Crisis between Liberalization and Government Intervention

    Get PDF
Abstract: The aim of this article is to provide a brief analysis of the current financial crisis, event that represents a major economic challenge and which reinforces the eternal dispute between the two economic thoughts: economic liberalization and government intervention. The analysis focuses on clarifying how these two concepts are represented, and the ways in which they have affected (or not) the recent events. Although the main variable in the crisis equation was supposed to be liberalization, this article finds out that it is the inadequate regulation that played an important role. In order to prevent such events, it is vital to properly understand the causes of the crisis and to identify the valuable lessons that can be learned

From Economic Behaviour to Behavioural Economics

Abstract: Mainstream economics postulates the existence of an economic man endowed with a rational and self-interested behaviour. The purpose of this article is to analyze the relevance of this attributes, since the economic behaviour is both a form of human action and the object of the study of economics. Moreover, we go further and examine the role of behavioural economics and the way in which it relates to the traditional model

Pro-Social Behaviours: Between Altruism and Self-interest

    Get PDF
A widely discussed attribute in the economic literature is the prevalence of self-interest. In this article we seek to analyze the concept of altruism from the economic perspective and from the general perspective of human action. We endeavour to clarify the relative confusion around it and to analyze its relation with charity and volunteering. Then, we go further and analyse what is causing such actions. Based on this, we attempt to find out whether the pro-social actions can be considered an effect of self-interest, or, conversely, of altruism

Les services des médiathèques de la HEP-BEJUNE: point de vue des usagers et propositions pour l'avenir

    Get PDF

Deep Neural Network based Cough Detection using Bed-mounted Accelerometer Measurements

We have performed cough detection based on measurements from an accelerometer attached to the patient's bed. This form of monitoring is less intrusive than body-attached accelerometer sensors, and sidesteps privacy concerns encountered when using audio for cough detection. For our experiments, we have compiled a manually-annotated dataset containing the acceleration signals of approximately 6000 cough and 68000 non-cough events from 14 adult male patients in a tuberculosis clinic. As classifiers, we have considered convolutional neural networks (CNN), long-short-term-memory (LSTM) networks, and a residual neural network (Resnet50). We find that all classifiers are able to distinguish between the acceleration signals due to coughing and those due to other activities including sneezing, throat-clearing and movement in the bed with high accuracy. The Resnet50 performs the best, achieving an area under the ROC curve (AUC) exceeding 0.98 in cross-validation experiments. We conclude that high-accuracy cough monitoring based only on measurements from the accelerometer in a consumer smartphone is possible. Since the need to gather audio is avoided and therefore privacy is inherently protected, and since the accelerometer is attached to the bed and not worn, this form of monitoring may represent a more convenient and readily accepted method of long-term patient cough monitoring.Comment: It has been accepted in ICASSP, 2021. Fluorescence Properties of Photonic Crystals Doped with Perylenediimide

    Get PDF
This study aims to present the fabrication of colloidal photonic crystals (PC) with increased fluorescence properties. The use of a highly fluorescent perylenediimide derivate (PDI) during the soap-free emulsion polymerization of styrene–acrylic acid resulted in monodisperse core–shell particles which allowed the fabrication of PC films. The properties of the hybrid material were studied in comparison with hybrid materials obtained by impregnation of films with chromophore solutions. In both cases an increase of the fluorescence response was observed in addition to a blue shift for the PDI core particles, proving the incorporation of the dye inside the copolymer particles
