CKM global fit and constraints on New Physics in the B meson mixing
An update profile of the CKM matrix is given, providing numerical and
graphical constraints on the CKM parameters in the Standard Model. Constraints
on additional parameters accounting for possible new physics contribution in a
model-independent analysis are also reported with emphasis on the leptonic
decay of the Bd and on the Bs mixing phase.Comment: ICHEP08 v2 : Corrected typo
EFFICIENCY IN BETTING MARKETS: EVIDENCE FROM ENGLISH FOOTBALL
We analyze the efficiency of English football betting markets between 2002 and 2006. We find evidence of a positive favourite-longshot bias for both home odds and away odds. Draw odds are instead characterized by a negative longshot bias. We also identify a draw bias in the sense that betting at draw odds yields a higher return than betting at home or away odds. Finally, we investigate betting strategies that exploit the variance of odds between bookmakers
Prospects for and modes and corresponding asymmetries at Tera-
The physics potential of measuring and
decays via four-photon final states at Tera- phase of
CEPC or FCC-ee is investigated in this paper. We propose an electromagnetic
calorimeter (ECAL) with both high energy resolution and excellent separation
power to efficiently reconstruct and from hadronic final states
with high photon multiplicity. The resulting -meson mass resolution is
approximately 30 MeV, allowing 3 separation between and .
With the assistance of the -jet tagging, the relative sensitivities to
, , , and
signal strengths at Tera- are projected as 0.45%, 4.5%,
18%, and 0.95%, respectively. Their dependence on various detector performances
is also discussed. In addition, and its two isospin-related
modes are paid special attention due to their roles in the determination of the
CKM angle (). The anticipated precisions of their
branching-ratio and -asymmetry measurements at Tera- are evaluated. We
show that the measurement of the time-integrated
asymmetry at Tera- is complementary to -factory ones. The precision on
combining - and -factory results reaches , lower than
the systematic uncertainties attached to isospin breaking
Modeling the phase equilibria of refrigerant fluids with the COSMO-SAC and COSMO-RS approaches. Application to process simulation
International audienceOn account of the constraints imposed by the European and International legislations, the refrigerant industry must constantly find alternative refrigerant fluids that have lower impacts on the global warming of Earth and Ozone layer. Working with refrigerant blends is often preferable to pure component fluids for energy saving and flexibility of operation. In order to select the optimal mixture composition for the design and operation of a refrigeration process, it is necessary to know the phase diagram and thermodynamic properties of mixtures. Vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) and the location of azeotropes must be accurately known. In this work three different thermodynamic models based on the COSMO approach have been used to predict the phase equilibria of mixtures of refrigerant molecules: the COSMO-RS model developed by Klamt and co workers [1, 2], the 2002 version of COSMO-SAC model [3], and the COSMO-SAC-dsp model [4] that includes a dispersion term. The vapor-liquid equilibria can be reasonably well predicted by the COSMO-RS model, however bad predictions are obtained with COSMO-SAC 2002. In particular, the COSMO-SAC model is unable to predict the azeotropic behavior observed in mixtures of alkanes and fluorinated molecules. By adjusting some universal parameters, it is possible to obtain reasonable predictions with the COSMO-SAC dsp model
Rethinking business models for innovation
One of the major challenges confronted by those in charge of technological innovation involves anticipating the value creation model sufficiently early on,in a highly uncertain context both as far as the technology itself is concerned and the potential market. Today, in many industrial sectors, the innovation boundaries have moved towards projects that are more and more exploratory and fuzzy. The simple optimisation of linear processes of the "stage-gate" type is no longer sufficient to build sustainable competitive advantages. The notion of Business Models, when applied to innovation, enables us to describe how a company creates value through innovation, generally within a business ecosystem, and how the value will be distributed between the actors involved. The authors of this book believe that the notions of Business Modelling and value creation are key to all the dimensions of successful innovation, whether technology, marketing, organisational or economically based. Rethinking Business Models for Innovation: this title describes the relationship between thinking, modelling, and also field-testing. The book is based on a series of nine recent cases of innovation involving company managers, often assisted by researchers (the co-authors of each chapter), and how they built and formalised their Business Models and then tested their strategies. After having discovered the variety of the cases, the reader will understand that every innovation situation generates specific questions about Business Models. However, we feel that we can identify three key issues that arise, more or less, in each of these projects. The chapters in this book build on these issues: the identification of sources of value and revenue models (the notion of value creation), the position of the company in the value-network or ecosystem (the sharing of value) and finally the evolution of Business MoDdels over time (the sustainability and the competitiveness of the company). The last chapter goes over all the contributions, exploring the notion of value in the Business Model approach.business model ; innovation ; value ; entrepreneurial project

The Cdx2 homeobox gene suppresses intestinal tumorigenesis through non-cell-autonomous mechanisms
Developmental genes contribute to cancer, as reported for the homeobox gene Cdx2 playing a tumor suppressor role in the gut. In this study, we show that human colon cancers exhibiting the highest reduction in CDX2 expression belong to the serrated subtype with the worst evolution. In mice, mosaic knockout of Cdx2 in the adult intestinal epithelium induces the formation of imperfect gastric-type metaplastic lesions. The metaplastic knockout cells do not spontaneously become tumorigenic. However, they induce profound modifications of the microenvironment that facilitate the tumorigenic evolution of adjacent Cdx2-intact tumor-prone cells at the surface of the lesions through NF-ÎșB activation, induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase, and stochastic loss of function of Apc. This study presents a novel paradigm in that metaplastic cells, generally considered as precancerous, can induce tumorigenesis from neighboring nonmetaplastic cells without themselves becoming cancerous. It unveils the novel property of non-cell-autonomous tumor suppressor gene for the Cdx2 gene in the gut
