    Rediscovery and status of Cylindera (s. str.) lunalonga (Schaupp, 1884) (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) in the San Joaquin Valley of California with a comparison to a Sierra Nevada population

    Surveys for adult Cylindera (s. str.) lunalonga (Schaupp) (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) were conducted between 2001 and 2011 at over 80 sites throughout the species’ historic range in the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Previously considered extirpated from the Valley, these surveys resulted in finding adults at 18 sites, several with large populations (>50 individuals). As suggested by historic records, our studies confirmed that the Valley populations of Cy. lunalonga occur in what were historically wetland sites, but are now lowland agricultural croplands. Adults were always associated with wet, muddy soil within and along the edges of irrigation ditches. A comparison of morphology, behavior, habitat, and conservation is made with the only known extant Sierra Nevada population

    Landscape architecture student choice: Profession or provider?

    Secondary school students face many choices about tertiary education. Some will have a career path in mind and choose to attend an institution that offers a relevant programme, while others will choose a programme offered by an institution that has been selected for other reasons. This paper investigates whether students enrolled in one of the three accredited landscape architecture programmes in New Zealand first chose their career rather than first selected an institution. It also reports on the factors that influenced these choices. Ninety-seven first-year landscape architecture students were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire. Seventy-five per cent chose a career in landscape architecture first, rather than first selecting an institution. In choosing a career, extrinsic motivations were more important than family or institutional influences, but institutional influences were more important than family or extrinsic factors when selecting a provider. The main factors influencing choice have implications for the profession; they also have implications for institutions regarding programme distinctiveness. Many factors play a role in these choices, including selection of subjects at school. Survey respondents reported on their choices of subject at secondary school and the usefulness of those subjects to their landscape architecture programme. A particular combination of secondary school courses may be a useful signal for students to consider landscape architecture as a possible career path

    We report the successful buffer-gas cooling and magnetic trapping of chromium atoms with densities exceeding 101210^{12} atoms per cm3^{3} at a temperature of 350 mK for the trapped sample. The possibilities to extend the method to buffer-gas cool and magnetically trap molecules are discussed. To minimize the most important loss mechanism in magnetic trapping, molecules with a small spin-spin interaction and a large rotational constant are preferred. Both the CrH (6ÎŁ+^6\Sigma^+ ground state) and MnH (7ÎŁ+^7\Sigma^+) radicals appear to be suitable systems for future experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 4 Figure

    Eliminating crystals in non-oxide optical fiber preforms and optical fibers

    A method is provided for eliminating crystals in non-oxide optical fiber preforms as well as optical fibers drawn therefrom. The optical-fiber-drawing axis of the preform is aligned with the force of gravity. A magnetic field is applied to the preform as it is heated to at least a melting temperature thereof. The magnetic field is applied in a direction that is parallel to the preform's optical-fiber-drawing axis. The preform is then cooled to a temperature that is less than a glass transition temperature of the preform while the preform is maintained in the magnetic field. When the processed preform is to have an optical fiber drawn therefrom, the preform's optical-fiber-drawing axis is again aligned with the force of gravity and a magnetic field is again applied along the axis as the optical fiber is drawn from the preform

    Actinomycotic infections, once common in humans and cattle, are now rare causes of disease in man. This general group of organisms belongs taxonomically between the true bacteria and the fungi; however, the organisms behave clinically like true anaerobes. The organism, although phagocytized by the host cells, is not killed. Therefore, d is defined as a facultative intracellular parasite of the host. The protean manifestations of actinomycotic infections often mimic infectious processes, such as osteomyelitis or granulomatous disease, as well as neoplasia. It is therefore important for the surgeon to include actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses in children as well as in adults. Being an anaerobe, the organism is difficult to culture and the diagnosis must be considered at the time of biopsy of a cervicofacial mass or when culturing a sinus tract. A case of a 12-year-old girl seen at Children\u27s Hospital of Los Angeles prompted the review of our experience with this disease. In this child, actinomycosis presented as an expansile mass in the mandible. From 1956 to 1986, five children were treated for cervicofacial actinomycosis.     Kaon Condensation in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) Model at High Density

    We demonstrate a fully self-consistent microscopic realization of a kaon-condensed colour-flavour locked state (CFLK0) within the context of a mean-field NJL model at high density. The properties of this state are shown to be consistent with the QCD low-energy effective theory once the proper gauge neutrality conditions are satisfied, and a simple matching procedure is used to compute the pion decay constant, which agrees with the perturbative QCD result. The NJL model is used to compare the energies of the CFLK0 state to the parity even CFL state, and to determine locations of the metal/insulator transition to a phase with gapless fermionic excitations in the presence of a non-zero hypercharge chemical potential and a non-zero strange quark mass. The transition points are compared with results derived previously via effective theories and with partially self-consistent NJL calculations. We find that the qualitative physics does not change, but that the transitions are slightly lower.Comment: 21 pages, ReVTeX4. Clarified discussion and minor change
