    Female politicians in the British press: The exception to the ā€˜masculineā€™ norm?

    As educators of journalists we are concerned with some of the most fundamental questions about the relationship between the media and democracy, and this we argue, is gendered. Through content analysis and interviews we look at the ways in which women MPs are represented in the British Press. We show that the way in which they are reported (or ignored) positions them as dierent from the ā€˜male normā€™ and this in turn has consequences for the ways in which democratic politics is written about by journalists and experienced by female MPs. A press rep-resentation of women that sometimes serves to suggest politics is a ā€˜manā€™s gameā€™, where women are regarded as the aberrant, exception to the rule, can alienate women representatives and likely future candidates. This in turn may have negative consequences for the democratic process, whereby women voters feel unrepresented in Parliament and turn away from political engagement

    This article asks questions about the ways in which female politicians are depicted in press coverage. Previous research has explored the ways in which female politicians are constructed as ā€˜otherā€™ from the male politician norm (Van Zoonen, 2006), where ā€˜men were taken to stand for the whole human populationā€™ (Gill, 2007a: 9). Other work has shown that coverage emphasises their appearance (Garcia-Blanco and Wahl-Jorgensen, 2011) or femininity (Harmer and Wring, 2013). But there has been less research on the visibility of women in politics in our media: women not only need to be involved in politics, they need to be seen to be doing political work. Through analysis of British press coverage using samples from the last 20 years, we examine the relative visibility of women MPs compared to men, the extent to which their voice is heard, and the context of the coverage.     Synergy Between Behavioural Research on Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus leucas) Conducted in Zoological and Wild Settings

    Behavioural observations of captive beluga whales have complemented and extended much of what has been learnt about this species in the wild. Aquarium-based research has provided finer-scale specificity for many topics, including the seasonal breeding pattern that is characteristic of this species, as well as socio-sexual behaviour that appears to be an important part of the behavioural repertoire of this species. One example is a strong propensity for maleā€“male social interactions that begin to develop at an early age. In addition, detailed behavioural milestones in calves have been documented in ways that extend that which have been collected from wild populations. These include swim positions with mother, separations/reunions with mother, and other social interactions, and play. Characteristics of beluga maternal care have also been studied more often in captive settings than in the wild, particularly with respect to details pertaining to nursing behaviour, individual differences in maternal style and allomaternal care. Other topics that have received scientific scrutiny in zoological settings include individual differences and behavioural laterality. Thus, a greater understanding of beluga behavioural biology has the potential to emerge as a consequence of synergy between research conducted in the two settings

    Hope for ā€œContinued Vitalityā€: Qualitative Study of Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury and Low Mood on Their Rehabilitation

    ObjectiveDepression is highly comorbid with traumatic brain injury (TBI) with often complex and interacting symptomology that contributes to the experience of disability. Comorbid depression results in poorer TBI rehabilitation and downstream participation outcomes yet perspectives of this group regarding person-centered care is unknown.PurposeThis study aimed to explicate the perspectives of persons with TBI and depression on their values, preferences, and desired outcomes for optimal rehabilitation.MethodsA qualitative descriptive approach was taken. Thirteen adults [mean age: 40.5 (standard deviation 9.8)] diagnosed with TBI and with self-reported low mood were recruited through convenience sampling. Participants were predominantly female (n = 12) with concussion/mild TBI and at least 6 months post-injury. One-on-one, semi-structured interviews were conducted by phone with Canadian participants (March-May 2020). Interviews were transcribed; data were analyzed thematically by two researchers and the thematic map refined by the research team.ResultsThree themes were identified on values, preferences, and desired outcomes in person-centered care. Participants valued ā€œvalidationā€ from healthcare providers and the health system to feel seen and believed about their conditions and concerns. They preferred for healthcare providers to ā€œshare the burden of managing careā€ through improved interactions and better access to concussion care. Participants expressed that ā€œmeaningful outcomesā€ were to be symptom free, to resume valued life activities, and to be able to adapt/be resilient. The latter indicated hope for ā€œcontinued vitalityā€ for life participation despite past and ongoing challenges.ConclusionsMany adults with TBI and self-identified low mood expressed rehabilitation experiences that were invalidating. Their identified values, preferences, and desired outcomes provide directions for better person-centered care by healthcare providers and health systems to support participation

    Developing a Catalog of Socio-Sexual Behaviors of Beluga Whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ) in the Care of Humans

    The repertoire of socio-sexual and sexual behaviors of cetaceans is relatively unknown. The purpose of the current study was to advance the existing knowledge of socio-sexual behavior of beluga whales through the development of a behavioral catalog that lists the full repertoire of sexual and socio-sexual behaviors. A behavioral catalog was developed initially from 800 hours of observations, collected across a 7-year period from 11 belugas ranging in age (birth to 30+ years), sex, and social groupings. Using this behavioral catalog, observations of eight additional belugas housed between two other facilities were coded for socio-sexual and sexual behaviors. Socio-sexual and sexual behaviors of belugas were similar across all three facilities. Socio-sexual and sexual behaviors involved sequenced behaviors, had lateralized components, and were often subtle in nature. Some of these behaviors overlapped with potentially aggressive actions but showed distinct differences in their form, or topography. Complexity and duration of socio-sexual interactions varied depending on the age and sex of the participating belugas. The development of a complete behavioral catalog, or ethogram, of the socio-sexual and sexual behaviors has profound influences on understanding the mechanisms involved for successful reproduction, a problem that several groups of belugas in their natural habitat are currently facing

    Responses to Familiar and Unfamiliar Humans by Belugas (Delphinapterus leucas), Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), & Pacific White-Sided Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens): A Replication and Extension

    Previous research has documented that cetaceans can discriminate between humans, but the process used to categorize humans still remains unclear. The goal of the present study was to replicate and extend previous work on the discrimination between familiar and unfamiliar humans by three species of cetaceans. The current study manipulated the familiarity and activity level of humans presented to 12 belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) housed between two facilities, five bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and six Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) during free-swim conditions. Two measures of discrimination were coded from video recordings of each trial: lateralized visual processing and gaze duration. No clear lateralization effects emerged at the species level, primarily due to extensive individual variability. The results also indicated that activity level influenced gaze durations across species, and for some individuals, the interaction between human familiarity and activity level influenced gaze durations and eye preferences. Unexpectedly, bottlenose dolphins had longer gaze durations for familiar humans whereas belugas and Pacific white-sided dolphins had longer gaze durations for unfamiliar humans. All three groups displayed longer gaze durations for active humans as compared to neutral humans, and belugas and bottlenose dolphins had significantly longer gaze durations than Pacific white-sided dolphins. These results indicate that the cetaceans can discriminate between unfamiliar and familiar humans and preferred active humans. However, discrimination of humans via lateralized visual processing did not appear at the group level, but rather at the individual level which countered previous research. This study is discussed within the contexts of attention and individual differences across animals of different species

    A Comparative Test of Creative Thinking in Preschool Children and Dolphins

    Creativity is considered one aspect of intelligence. Including creativity allows for more room for expression (e.g., participants can respond with movement instead of written or verbal responses) than in standard intelligence assessments. The Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT; Torrance, 1974) are the leading method of assessing creative abilities in school-aged humans and above. To assess creativity in young humans and nonhuman animals, modifications must be made to facilitate nonverbal responses. In the current study, a cross-species comparison was conducted between preschoolers and bottlenose dolphins to examine responses to a modified creativity task in which both species were trained to demonstrate non-repeated behaviors to an ā€œinnovateā€ prompt. The resulting behaviors for the first test session were coded for fluency (number of non-repeated behaviors demonstrated), originality, and flexibility (low, moderate, or high activity level). Children and dolphins produced a similar number of non-repeated behaviors during individual test trials and also had similar originality scores. Related to flexibility, dolphins displayed more low energy activity levels compared to the children. Given the limited understanding of creative abilities in animals and young children, this comparison using a modified version of the TTCT offers exciting possibilities. These results could provide further evidence of similarities in cognitive processes for humans and nonhuman animals

    Establishing Research Competitiveness in Biophysical Sciences in Maine

    The Maine EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement award is designed to enhance Maine\u27s competitiveness in molecular biophysical sciences through a partnership between the University of Maine and Maine\u27s non-profit research organizations. The proposed Biophysical Sciences Institute brings together University of Maine faculty in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and spatial engineering, with biomedical researchers at the Jackson Laboratory and Maine Medical Center Research Institute. Maine EPSCoR proposes to hire additional tenure-track faculty in the fields of biophysics and advanced optics, biochemistry, structural biology, applied mathematics, computer science, image analysis and visualization, and material science. The new and existing investigators will form research teams to develop new measurement techniques, new sensors, and innovative approaches to data processing and interpretation in intracellular structures and dynamics, functional materials as a means to manipulate cellular reactions, and biocomputing. In addition to establishing the institute, Maine EPSCoR will integrate research and education through improvements to graduate training
