    Is This Verb a Word? A philological Study of the Distribution of Phonological and Morphological Domains in the Middle Welsh Verb

    The - for European languages - large amount of bound elements in the older Insular Celtic languages and the array of phonological interactions within morphological and phrasal structures have lead several researchers to conclude that individual words play a lesser role in the grammars of those languages. Based on current typological research on wordhood and a thorough discussion of the problems and limitations of studying wordhood in corpus languages, this article gives an in-depth investigation of the morphological and phonological word-like domains in the Middle Welsh verbal complex. There are several structures that could be labelled ‘word’ on the basis of the findings presented here, which leads to the conclusion that the term is not very useful for the synchronic description of this language

    Breeding sunflower cultivars for the northern latitudes

    Development of short season sunflower hybrids has been the main objective of the Canadian sunflower breeding program. A gene pool created with 50 lines extracted from USSR open-pollinated varieties provided a good source of early inbred lines. The gene pool produced the lines CM447, CM469 and CM497 which were the basis for the superior early parental lines. Another early line, CM594, was extracted from Armavirec. CM447 and CM594 were converted to the cytoplasmic male sterile (cms) form, while CM469 and CM497 were used in the development of fertility-restorer lines. Hybrids from these lines and in combination with HA3O1, HA232, and NS39 resulted in up to 15 days earlier maturity than the standard hybrids, with good oil content, disease resistance and lodging resistance.     Genetic Analysis in Drosophila Reveals a Role for the Mitochondrial Protein P32 in Synaptic Transmission

    Mitochondria located within neuronal presynaptic terminals have been shown to play important roles in the release of chemical neurotransmitters. In the present study, a genetic screen for synaptic transmission mutants of Drosophila has identified the first mutation in a Drosophila homolog of the mitochondrial protein P32. Although P32 is highly conserved and has been studied extensively, its physiological role in mitochondria remains unknown and it has not previously been implicated in neural function. The Drosophila P32 mutant, referred to as dp32EC1, exhibited a temperature-sensitive (TS) paralytic behavioral phenotype. Moreover, electrophysiological analysis at adult neuromuscular synapses revealed a TS reduction in the amplitude of excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSC) and indicated that dP32 functions in neurotransmitter release. These studies are the first to address P32 function in Drosophila and expand our knowledge of mitochondrial proteins contributing to synaptic transmission

    Management of Peritonsillar Abscess Within a Local Emergency Department: A Quality Analysis Study.

    OBJECTIVE: Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is the most common deep space infection of the head and neck, affecting thousands of people annually with high treatment costs. The purpose of this project was to determine how in-network emergency departments (EDs) adhere to generally accepted guidelines regarding diagnosis and management of potential PTAs. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective chart review to identify patients with PTA in five EDs in one year. Information pertaining to diagnostic tests, treatment, and airway status was also collected. Descriptive analysis was used to assess if EDs were consistent with generally accepted guidelines. RESULTS: Six hundred twenty-one patient records were identified and 140 were included in final analysis. Out of 140 patients, 71 were admitted for inpatient management and 23 were admitted for observation. Of the 46 patients diagnosed and discharged from the ED, 61% received a computerized tomography (CT) scan and only 39% had PTA drainage performed. Four (3%) patients received a point of care ultrasound and a CT scan and no patient received only an ultrasound. Out of all patients, 116/140 received a CT scan and 22 received drainage in the ED. The remainder of these patients either had drainage performed by an otolaryngologist or had no drainage performed. Of the 94 patients admitted for inpatient or observation, 84 received a CT scan and six received drainage by an ED physician. Only 62% of patients were given a penicillin derivative and 29% were given clindamycin, which has no Gram-negative coverage. CONCLUSION: One-third of PTA patients were managed within the ED, far less than similar studies. Of these, over 50% received a CT scan and less than 50% had PTA drainage. PTA drainage can improve patients\u27 symptoms and antibiotic effectiveness. The majority of patients were prescribed a penicillin derivative with or without another antibiotic

    Association of the 894G>T polymorphism in the endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene with risk of acute myocardial infarction

    Background: This study was designed to investigate the association of the 894G>T polymorphism in the eNOS gene with risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), extent of coronary artery disease (CAD) on coronary angiography, and in-hospital mortality after AMI. Methods: We studied 1602 consecutive patients who were enrolled in the GEMIG study. The control group was comprised by 727 individuals, who were randomly selected from the general adult population. Results: The prevalence of the Asp298 variant of eNOS was not found to be significantly and independently associated with risk of AMI (RR = 1.08, 95%CI = 0.77–1.51, P = 0.663), extent of CAD on angiography (OR = 1.18, 95%CI = 0.63–2.23, P = 0.605) and in-hospital mortality (RR = 1.08, 95%CI = 0.29–4.04, P = 0.908). Conclusion: In contrast to previous reports, homozygosity for the Asp298 variant of the 894G>T polymorphism in the eNOS gene was not found to be associated with risk of AMI, extent of CAD and in-hospital mortality after AM

    AbstractgC1qBP is a 33 kDa glycoprotein that binds to the globular `heads' of C1q. We have cloned cDNAs encoding the rat and mouse homologues of gC1qBP. Comparison of the cDNA-derived amino acid sequences of gC1qBP reveals that either of the rodent sequences is 89.9% identical to the reported human sequence. Recombinant rat gC1qBP binds avidly to human C1q. gC1qBP mRNA is abundantly expressed in every rat and mouse tissue analysed. Rat mesangial cells synthesise gC1qBP, but do not express gC1qBP on the cell surface. In rat serum, gC1qBP is present at low levels

    Genetic analysis of water loss of excised leaves associated with drought tolerance in wheat

    BACKGROUND: . Wheat is widely affected by drought. Low excised-leaf water loss (ELWL) has frequently been associated with improved grain yield under drought. This study dissected the genetic control of ELWL in wheat, associated physiological, morphological and anatomical leaf traits, and compared these with yield QTLs. Methods. Ninety-four hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) doubled haploids, mapped with over 700 markers, were tested for three years for ELWL from detached leaf 4 of glasshouse-grown plants. In one experiment, stomata per unit area and leaf thickness parameters from leaf cross-sections were measured. QTLs were identified using QTLCartographer. Results. ELWL was significantly negatively correlated with leaf length, width, area and thickness. Major QTLs for ELWL during 0-3 h and 3-6 h were coincident across trials on 3A, 3B, 4B, 5B, 5D, 6B, 7A, 7B, 7D and frequently coincident (inversely) with leaf size QTLs. Yield in other trials was sometimes associated with ELWL and leaf size phenotypically and genotypically, but more frequently under non-droughted than droughted conditions. QTL coincidence showed only ELWL to be associated with drought/control yield ratio. Discussion. Our results demonstrated that measures of ELWL and leaf size were equally effective predictors of yield, and both were more useful for selecting under favourable than stressed conditions
