Advancing Operating Systems via Aspect-Oriented Programming
Operating system kernels are among the most complex pieces of software in existence to-
day. Maintaining the kernel code and developing new functionality is increasingly compli-
cated, since the amount of required features has risen significantly, leading to side ef fects
that can be introduced inadvertedly by changing a piece of code that belongs to a completely
dif ferent context.
Software developers try to modularize their code base into separate functional units.
Some of the functionality or “concerns” required in a kernel, however, does not fit into
the given modularization structure; this code may then be spread over the code base and
its implementation tangled with code implementing dif ferent concerns. These so-called
“crosscutting concerns” are especially dif ficult to handle since a change in a crosscutting
concern implies that all relevant locations spread throughout the code base have to be
modified.
Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) is an approach to handle crosscutting
concerns by factoring them out into separate modules. The “advice” code contained in
these modules is woven into the original code base according to a pointcut description, a
set of interaction points (joinpoints) with the code base.
To be used in operating systems, AOSD requires tool support for the prevalent procedu-
ral programming style as well as support for weaving aspects. Many interactions in kernel
code are dynamic, so in order to implement non-static behavior and improve performance,
a dynamic weaver that deploys and undeploys aspects at system runtime is required.
This thesis presents an extension of the “C” programming language to support AOSD.
Based on this, two dynamic weaving toolkits – TOSKANA and TOSKANA-VM – are presented
to permit dynamic aspect weaving in the monolithic NetBSD kernel as well as in a virtual-
machine and microkernel-based Linux kernel running on top of L4. Based on TOSKANA,
applications for this dynamic aspect technology are discussed and evaluated.
The thesis closes with a view on an aspect-oriented kernel structure that maintains
coherency and handles crosscutting concerns using dynamic aspects while enhancing de-
velopment methods through the use of domain-specific programming languages

Wigner Crystallization in a Quasi-3D Electronic System
When a strong magnetic field is applied perpendicularly (along z) to a sheet
confining electrons to two dimensions (x-y), highly correlated states emerge as
a result of the interplay between electron-electron interactions, confinement
and disorder. These so-called fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquids form a
series of states which ultimately give way to a periodic electron solid that
crystallizes at high magnetic fields. This quantum phase of electrons has been
identified previously as a disorder-pinned two-dimensional Wigner crystal with
broken translational symmetry in the x-y plane. Here, we report our discovery
of a new insulating quantum phase of electrons when a very high magnetic field,
up to 45T, is applied in a geometry parallel (y-direction) to the
two-dimensional electron sheet. Our data point towards this new quantum phase
being an electron solid in a "quasi-3D" configuration induced by orbital
coupling with the parallel field
Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Depth cues and perceived audiovisual synchrony of biological motion
Due to their different propagation times, visual and auditory signals from external events arrive at the human sensory receptors with a disparate delay. This delay consistently varies with distance, but, despite such variability, most events are perceived as synchronic. There is, however, contradictory data and claims regarding the existence of compensatory mechanisms for distance in simultaneity judgments.
Principal Findings:
In this paper we have used familiar audiovisual events – a visual walker and footstep sounds – and manipulated the number of depth cues. In a simultaneity judgment task we presented a large range of stimulus onset asynchronies corresponding to distances of up to 35 meters. We found an effect of distance over the simultaneity estimates, with greater distances requiring larger stimulus onset asynchronies, and vision always leading. This effect was stronger when both visual and auditory cues were present but was interestingly not found when depth cues were impoverished.
Significance:

TET proteins regulate the lineage specification and TCR-mediated expansion of iNKT cells
TET proteins oxidize 5-methylcytosine in DNA to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine and other oxidation products. We found that simultaneous deletion of Tet2 and Tet3 in mouse CD4+CD8+ double-positive thymocytes resulted in dysregulated development and proliferation of invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT cells). Tet2-Tet3 double-knockout (DKO) iNKT cells displayed pronounced skewing toward the NKT17 lineage, with increased DNA methylation and impaired expression of genes encoding the key lineage-specifying factors T-bet and ThPOK. Transfer of purified Tet2-Tet3 DKO iNKT cells into immunocompetent recipient mice resulted in an uncontrolled expansion that was dependent on the nonclassical major histocompatibility complex (MHC) protein CD1d, which presents lipid antigens to iNKT cells. Our data indicate that TET proteins regulate iNKT cell fate by ensuring their proper development and maturation and by suppressing aberrant proliferation mediated by the T cell antigen receptor (TCR)
Carbon uptake by mature Amazon forests has mitigated Amazon nations' carbon emissions
BACKGROUND: Several independent lines of evidence suggest that Amazon forests have provided a significant carbon sink service, and also that the Amazon carbon sink in intact, mature forests may now be threatened as a result of different processes. There has however been no work done to quantify non-land-use-change forest carbon fluxes on a national basis within Amazonia, or to place these national fluxes and their possible changes in the context of the major anthropogenic carbon fluxes in the region. Here we present a first attempt to interpret results from ground-based monitoring of mature forest carbon fluxes in a biogeographically, politically, and temporally differentiated way. Specifically, using results from a large long-term network of forest plots, we estimate the Amazon biomass carbon balance over the last three decades for the different regions and nine nations of Amazonia, and evaluate the magnitude and trajectory of these differentiated balances in relation to major national anthropogenic carbon emissions. RESULTS: The sink of carbon into mature forests has been remarkably geographically ubiquitous across Amazonia, being substantial and persistent in each of the five biogeographic regions within Amazonia. Between 1980 and 2010, it has more than mitigated the fossil fuel emissions of every single national economy, except that of Venezuela. For most nations (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname) the sink has probably additionally mitigated all anthropogenic carbon emissions due to Amazon deforestation and other land use change. While the sink has weakened in some regions since 2000, our analysis suggests that Amazon nations which are able to conserve large areas of natural and semi-natural landscape still contribute globally-significant carbon sequestration. CONCLUSIONS: Mature forests across all of Amazonia have contributed significantly to mitigating climate change for decades. Yet Amazon nations have not directly benefited from providing this global scale ecosystem service. We suggest that better monitoring and reporting of the carbon fluxes within mature forests, and understanding the drivers of changes in their balance, must become national, as well as international, priorities
