    Enhancement of the Benjamin-Feir instability with dissipation

    It is shown that there is an overlooked mechanism whereby some kinds of dissipation can enhance the Benjamin-Feir instability of water waves.     Generation of higher derivatives operators and electromagnetic wave propagation in a Lorentz-violation scenario

    We study the perturbative generation of higher-derivative operators as corrections to the photon effective action, which are originated from a Lorentz violation background. Such corrections are obtained, at one-loop order, through the proper-time method, using the zeta function regularization. We focus over the lowest order corrections and investigate their influence in the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the vacuum, in the presence of a strong, constant magnetic field. This is a setting of experimental relevance, since it bases active efforts to measure non linear electromagnetic effects. After surprising cancellations of Lorentz violating corrections to the Maxwell's equation, we show that no effects of the kind of Lorentz violation we consider can be detected in such a context.Comment: v2: 13 pages, no figures, section IV considerably rewritten, main results unchanged and are now obtained in a simpler way.     THE INFLUENCE OF PRECEDING MOVEMENTS IN THE PERFORMANCE OF BALLET JUMPS

    The purpose of this study was to gain more insights about the individual technique used in the performance of ballet jumps and determine the influence of preceding movements in the efficiency of its performance. Seven female ballet students participate voluntarily in the study. Ground reaction forces were measured using a Bertec force plate. A triaxial accelerometer was placed at the low back of the subject on the skin surface, approximately at the height of the centre of mass. Results suggest that generally, a positive influence from preceding movements was observed in the performance of the selected jumps. Jumps preceded by only one movement, show a tendency to an increase in the reached height. Due to an immature technique of performance, our ballet students did not use appropriately preceding movements to potentiate the subsequent jumps

    SP mountain data analysis

    An analysis of synthetic aperture radar data of SP Mountain was undertaken to demonstrate the use of digital image processing techniques to aid in geologic interpretation of SAR data. These data were collected with the ERIM X- and L-band airborne SAR using like- and cross-polarizations. The resulting signal films were used to produce computer compatible tapes, from which four-channel imagery was generated. Slant range-to-ground range and range-azimuth-scale corrections were made in order to facilitate image registration; intensity corrections were also made. Manual interpretation of the imagery showed that L-band represented the geology of the area better than X-band. Several differences between the various images were also noted. Further digital analysis of the corrected data was done for enhancement purposes. This analysis included application of an MSS differencing routine and development of a routine for removal of relief displacement. It was found that accurate registration of the SAR channels is critical to the effectiveness of the differencing routine. Use of the relief displacement algorithm on the SP Mountain data demonstrated the feasibility of the technique

    Tuned liquid dampers simulation for earthquake response control of buildings

    This paper is focused on the study of an earthquake protection system, the Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD), which can, if adequately designed, reduce earthquake demands on buildings. This positive effect is accomplished taking into account the oscillation of the free surface of a fluid inside a tank (sloshing). The behaviour of an isolated Tuned Liquid Damper, subjected to a sinusoidal excitation at its base, with different displacement amplitudes, was studied by finite element analysis. The efficiency of the TLD in improving the seismic response of an existing building, representative of modern architecture buildings in southern European countries was also evaluated based on linear dynamic analyses

    CVD of CrO2: towards a lower temperature deposition process

    We report on the synthesis of highly oriented a-axis CrO2 films onto (0001) sapphire by atmospheric pressure CVD from CrO3 precursor, at growth temperatures down to 330 degree Celsius, i.e. close to 70 degrees lower than in published data for the same chemical system. The films keep the high quality magnetic behaviour as those deposited at higher temperature, which can be looked as a promising result in view of their use with thermally sensitive materials, e.g. narrow band gap semiconductors.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    SUBMISSION OF ALLEGED AND UNLIVED SYSTEMS TO PROVIDE HEAT TRANSFER EFFICIENCY

    The study presented is based on two automotive fin and non-fin heads made of cast aluminum that were subjected to an indirect heating called conduction and convection by means of a rectangular equipment constructed of 2mm 1020 carbon steel plate, isolated in its bases. and side by means of a 10mm thick ceramic fiber blanket sandwich, subjected to an internal heat source, a 3,000 watt finned heater, which conducted conductive and convective heat to the top cover where the heads were housed, the fin side and the non fin side. The heating was controlled by thermostat, which when it reached its highest value, was turned off and the calibration made using fans until reaching the ambient temperature. Temperature data were collected by a PICO TECH-TC-08 data entry plate, viewed on the computer through the card software and compared between both fin and non-fin heads by means of “K” thermocouples glued to each silicon block and their respective instrumentation, so that the temperature sensors were strategically positioned to prove the study. After analyzing and discussing the results, it is observed that finned bodies under this operating condition and constructive aspects allowed a better thermal exchange with the medium, producing a higher efficiency between 5 and 12%
