    Effect of alloying elements on magnesium alloy damping capacities at room temperature

    Alloying is a good approach to increasing its strength but leads to a reduction of damping to pure magnesium. Classifying the alloying characteristics of various alloying elements in magnesium alloys and their combined effects on the damping and mechanical properties of magnesium alloys is important. In this paper, the properties of the Mg-0.6wt%X binary alloys were analyzed through strength measurements and dynamic mechanical analysis. The effects of foreign atoms on solid-solution strengthening and dislocation damping were studied comprehensively. The effect of solid solubility on damping capacity can be considered from two perspectives: the effect of single solid-solution atoms on the damping capacities of the alloy, and the effect of solubility on the damping capacities of the alloy. The results provide significant information that is useful in developing high-strength, high-damping magnesium alloys. This study will provide scientific guidance regarding the development of new types of damping magnesium alloys

    Observing the First Stars and Black Holes

    The high sensitivity of JWST will open a new window on the end of the cosmological dark ages. Small stellar clusters, with a stellar mass of several 10^6 M_sun, and low-mass black holes (BHs), with a mass of several 10^5 M_sun should be directly detectable out to redshift z=10, and individual supernovae (SNe) and gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows are bright enough to be visible beyond this redshift. Dense primordial gas, in the process of collapsing from large scales to form protogalaxies, may also be possible to image through diffuse recombination line emission, possibly even before stars or BHs are formed. In this article, I discuss the key physical processes that are expected to have determined the sizes of the first star-clusters and black holes, and the prospect of studying these objects by direct detections with JWST and with other instruments. The direct light emitted by the very first stellar clusters and intermediate-mass black holes at z>10 will likely fall below JWST's detection threshold. However, JWST could reveal a decline at the faint-end of the high-redshift luminosity function, and thereby shed light on radiative and other feedback effects that operate at these early epochs. JWST will also have the sensitivity to detect individual SNe from beyond z=10. In a dedicated survey lasting for several weeks, thousands of SNe could be detected at z>6, with a redshift distribution extending to the formation of the very first stars at z>15. Using these SNe as tracers may be the only method to map out the earliest stages of the cosmic star-formation history. Finally, we point out that studying the earliest objects at high redshift will also offer a new window on the primordial power spectrum, on 100 times smaller scales than probed by current large-scale structure data.Comment: Invited contribution to "Astrophysics in the Next Decade: JWST and Concurrent Facilities", Astrophysics & Space Science Library, Eds.     Fungal diversity notes 253–366: taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions to fungal taxa

    Notes on 113 fungal taxa are compiled in this paper, including 11 new genera, 89 new species, one new subspecies, three new combinations and seven reference specimens. A wide geographic and taxonomic range of fungal taxa are detailed. In the Ascomycota the new genera Angustospora (Testudinaceae), Camporesia (Xylariaceae), Clematidis, Crassiparies (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Farasanispora, Longiostiolum (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Multilocularia (Parabambusicolaceae), Neophaeocryptopus (Dothideaceae), Parameliola (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), and Towyspora (Lentitheciaceae) are introduced. Newly introduced species are Angustospora nilensis, Aniptodera aquibella, Annulohypoxylon albidiscum, Astrocystis thailandica, Camporesia sambuci, Clematidis italica, Colletotrichum menispermi, C. quinquefoliae, Comoclathris pimpinellae, Crassiparies quadrisporus, Cytospora salicicola, Diatrype thailandica, Dothiorella rhamni, Durotheca macrostroma, Farasanispora avicenniae, Halorosellinia rhizophorae, Humicola koreana, Hypoxylon lilloi, Kirschsteiniothelia tectonae, Lindgomyces okinawaensis, Longiostiolum tectonae, Lophiostoma pseudoarmatisporum, Moelleriella phukhiaoensis, M. pongdueatensis, Mucoharknessia anthoxanthi, Multilocularia bambusae, Multiseptospora thysanolaenae, Neophaeocryptopus cytisi, Ocellularia arachchigei, O. ratnapurensis, Ochronectria thailandica, Ophiocordyceps karstii, Parameliola acaciae, P. dimocarpi, Parastagonospora cumpignensis, Pseudodidymosphaeria phlei, Polyplosphaeria thailandica, Pseudolachnella brevifusiformis, Psiloglonium macrosporum, Rhabdodiscus albodenticulatus, Rosellinia chiangmaiensis, Saccothecium rubi, Seimatosporium pseudocornii, S. pseudorosae, Sigarispora ononidis and Towyspora aestuari. The new species of Basidiomycota are Agaricus coccyginus, A. luteofibrillosus, Amanita atrobrunnea, A. digitosa, A. gleocystidiosa, A. pyriformis, A. strobilipes, Bondarzewia tibetica, Cortinarius albosericeus, C. badioflavidus, C. dentigratus, C. duboisensis, C. fragrantissimus, C. roseobasilis, C. vinaceobrunneus, C. vinaceogrisescens, C. wahkiacus, Cyanoboletus hymenoglutinosus, Fomitiporia atlantica, F. subtilissima, Ganoderma wuzhishanensis, Inonotus shoreicola, Lactifluus armeniacus, L. ramipilosus, Leccinum indoaurantiacum, Musumecia alpina, M. sardoa, Russula amethystina subp. tengii and R. wangii are introduced. Descriptions, illustrations, notes and / or reference specimens are designated for Clarkeinda trachodes, Dentocorticium ussuricum, Galzinia longibasidia, Lentinus stuppeus and Leptocorticium tenellum. The other new genera, species new combinations are Anaeromyces robustus, Neocallimastix californiae and Piromyces finnis from Neocallimastigomycota, Phytophthora estuarina, P. rhizophorae, Salispina, S. intermedia, S. lobata and S. spinosa from Oomycota, and Absidia stercoraria, Gongronella orasabula, Mortierella calciphila, Mucor caatinguensis, M. koreanus, M. merdicola and Rhizopus koreanus in Zygomycota

    Modeling of internal transparent collector IGBTs and the extraction of electron lifetime in nano-voids layer

    A new type of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) - internal transparent collector (ITC) IGBT is proposed. It is quite similar to that of the PT-IGBT, but a very low carrier lifetime control region is introduced in the P+ substrate near the p-collector/n-buffer junction. Based on quasi-static hypothesis, the ITC-IGBTs' static characteristic equations are given. The turn-off equations are also derived on base of non-quasi-static analysis. The model is used to our fabricated device structure and the results fit well to the experiment results. Based on the relationship of Von and local carrier lifetime, electron lifetime in carrier lifetime control region is deduced. They are at range of 0.2-30 nanoseconds. The static performance as well as turn-off loses of ITC-IGBT is compared to PT- and FS-IGBT. The ITC-IGBT shows good potential for 600V IGBT applications. © 2009 IEEE

    Influence of high temperature on the tribological properties of hybrid PTFE/Kevlar fabric composite

    The tribological properties of PTFE/Kevlar fabric are extremely important for the service behavior of self-lubricating and maintenance-free joint bearings in aviation, aerospace and other fields that require high wear performance at different temperatures. This paper aims at investigating the influence of the ambient temperature on the tribological properties of hybrid PTFE/Kevlar fabric through reciprocating wear tests. The wear loss, surface damage morphology and tribo-chemical behaviors of PTFE/Kevlar at the temperature range of 25–200 °C are first analyzed. The wear mechanisms, damage behaviors and their transitions with the increase in the ambient temperature and reciprocating cycles are then systematically discussed. This information can provide a guide to master the range of safe use and the optimization of materials

    Transposition of the bamboo Mariner-like element Ppmar1 in yeast

    The moso bamboo genome contains the two structurally intact and thus potentially functional mariner-like elements Ppmar1 and Ppmar2. Both elements contain perfect terminal inverted repeats (TIRs) and a full-length intact transposase gene. Here we investigated whether Ppmar1 is functional in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). We have designed a two-component system consisting of a transposase expression cassette and a non-autonomous transposon on two separate plasmids. We demonstrate that the Ppmar1 transposase Pptpase1 catalyses excision of the non-autonomous Ppmar1NA element from the plasmid and reintegration at TA dinucleotide sequences in the yeast chromosomes. In addition we generated 14 hyperactive Ppmar1 transposase variants by systematic single amino acid substitutions. The most active transposase variant, S171A, induces 10-fold more frequent Ppmar1NA excisions in yeast than the wild type transposase. The Ppmar1 transposon is a promising tool for insertion mutagenesis in moso bamboo and may be used in other plants as an alternative to the established transposon tagging systems
