    Transition Radiation by Neutrinos

We calculate the transition radiation process ν→νγ\nu \to \nu \gamma at an interface of two media. The neutrinos are taken to be with only standard-model couplings. The medium fulfills the dual purpose of inducing an effective neutrino-photon vertex and of modifying the photon dispersion relation. The transition radiation occurs when at least one of those quantities have different values in different media. The neutrino mass is ignored due to its negligible contribution. We present a result for the probability of the transition radiation which is both accurate and analytic. For Eν=1E_\nu =1 MeV neutrino crossing polyethylene-vacuum interface the transition radiation probability is about 10−3910^{-39} and the energy intensity is about 10−3410^{-34} eV. At the surface of the neutron stars the transition radiation probability may be ∼10−20\sim 10^{-20}. Our result on three orders of magnitude is larger than the results of previous calculations

Differential Neutrino Rates and Emissivities from the Plasma Process in Astrophysical Systems

The differential rates and emissivities of neutrino pairs from an equilibrium plasma are calculated for the wide range of density and temperature encountered in astrophysical systems. New analytical expressions are derived for the differential emissivities which yield total emissivities in full agreement with those previously calculated. The photon and plasmon pair production and absorption kernels in the source term of the Boltzmann equation for neutrino transport are provided. The appropriate Legendre coefficients of these kernels, in forms suitable for multi-group flux-limited diffusion schemes are also computed.Comment: 27 pages and 10 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

The photo-neutrino process in astrophysical systems

Explicit expressions for the differential and total rates and emissivities of neutrino pairs from the photo-neutrino process e±+γ→e±+ν+νˉe^\pm + \gamma \to e^\pm + \nu + \bar\nu in hot and dense matter are derived. Full information about the emitted neutrinos is retained by evaluating the squared matrix elements for this process which was hitherto bypassed through the use of Lenard's identity in obtaining the total neutrino emissivities. Accurate numerical results are presented for widely varying conditions of temperature and density. Analytical results helpful in understanding the qualitative behaviors of the rates and emissivities in limiting situations are derived. The corresponding production and absorption kernels in the source term of the Boltzmann equation for neutrino transport are developed. The appropriate Legendre coefficients of these kernels, in forms suitable for multigroup flux-limited diffusion schemes are also provided.Comment: 26 pages and 7 figures. Version as accepted in Phys. Identity of the imaginary-time and real-time thermal propagators for scalar bound states in a one-generation Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

By rigorous reanalysis of the results, we have proven that the propagators at finite temperature for scalar bound states in one-generation fermion condensate scheme of electroweak symmetry breaking are in fact identical in the imaginary-time and the real-time formalism. This dismisses the doubt about possible discrepancy between the two formalisms in this problem. Identity of the derived thermal transformation matrices of the real-time matrix propagators for scalar bound states without and with chemical potential and the ones for corresponding elementary scalar particles shows similarity of thermodynamic property between the two types of particles. Only one former inference is modified, i.e. when the two flavors of fermions have unequal nonzero masses, the amplitude of the composite Higgs particle will decay instead grow in time.Comment: 5 pages, revtex4, no figure

On the thermal sunset diagram for scalar field theories

We study the so-called `` sunset diagram'', which is one of two-loop self-energy diagrams, for scalar field theories at finite temperature. For this purpose, we first find the complete expression of the bubble diagram, the one-loop subdiagram of the sunset diagram, for arbitrary momentum. We calculate the temperature independent part and dependent part of the sunset diagram separately. For the former, we obtain the discontinuous part first and the finite continuous part next using a twice-subtracted dispersion relation. For the latter, we express it as a one-dimensional integral in terms of the bubble diagram. We also study the structure of the discontinuous part of the sunset diagram. Physical processes, which are responsible for it, are identified. Processes due to the scattering with particles in the heat bath exist only at finite temperature and generate discontinuity for arbitrary momentum, which is a remarkable feature of the two-loop diagrams at finite temperature. As an application of our result, we study the effect of the diagram on the spectral function of the sigma meson at finite temperature in the linear sigma model, which was obtained at one-loop order previously. At high temperature where the decay σ→ππ\sigma\to\pi\pi is forbidden, sigma acquires a finite width of the order of 10MeV10 {\rm MeV} while within the one-loop calculation its width vanishes. At low temperature, the spectrum does not deviate much from that at one-loop order. Possible consequences with including other two-loop diagrams are discussed.Comment: 30 page

Charged Higgs Boson Production in Bottom-Gluon Fusion

We compute the complete next-to-leading order SUSY-QCD corrections for the associated production of a charged Higgs boson with a top quark via bottom-gluon fusion. We investigate the applicability of the bottom parton description in detail. The higher order corrections can be split into real and virtual corrections for a general two Higgs doublet model and into additional massive supersymmetric loop contributions. We find that the perturbative behavior is well under control. The supersymmetric contributions consist of the universal bottom Yukawa coupling corrections and non-factorizable diagrams. Over most of the relevant supersymmetric parameter space the Yukawa coupling corrections are sizeable, while the remaining supersymmetric loop contributions are negligible.Comment: 18 pages, v2: some discussions added, v3: published versio

Transport Coefficients and Analytic Continuation in Dual 1+1 Dimensional Models at Finite Temperature

    Get PDF
The conductivity of a finite temperature 1+1 dimensional fermion gas described by the massive Thirring model is shown to be related to the retarded propagator of the dual boson sine-Gordon model. Duality provides a natural resummation which resolves infra-red problems, and the boson propagator can be related to the fermion gas at non-zero temperature and chemical potential or density. In addition, at high temperatures, we can apply a dimensional reduction technique to find resummed closed expressions for the boson self-energy and relate them to the fermion conductivity. Particular attention is paid to the discussion of analytic continuation. The resummation implicit in duality provides a powerful alternative to the standard diagrammatic evaluation of transport coefficients at finite temperature.Comment: 41 pages, 6 figure

Hadronic EDMs, the Weinberg Operator, and Light Gluinos

We re-examine questions concerning the contribution of the three-gluon Weinberg operator to the electric dipole moment of the neutron, and provide several QCD sum rule-based arguments that the result is smaller than - but nevertheless consistent with - estimates which invoke naive dimensional analysis. We also point out a regime of the MSSM parameter space with light gluinos for which this operator provides the dominant contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment due to enhancement via the dimension five color electric dipole moment of the gluino.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 3 figures; v2: references added; v3: typos corrected, to appear in Phys. Exclusive Higgs Boson Production with bottom quarks at Hadron Colliders

We present the next-to-leading order QCD corrected rate for the production of a scalar Higgs boson with a pair of high p_T bottom and anti-bottom quarks at the Tevatron and at the Large Hadron Collider. Results are given for both the Standard Model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The exclusive b-bbar-h production rate is small in the Standard Model, but it can be greatly enhanced in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model for large tan(beta), making b-bbar-h an important discovery mode. We find that the next-to-leading order QCD results are much less sensitive to the renormalization and factorization scales than the lowest order results, but have a significant dependence on the choice of the renormalization scheme for the bottom quark Yukawa coupling.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures, RevTeX
