    Effects of early musical experience on auditory sequence memory

    The present study investigated a possible link between musical training and immediate memory span by testing experienced musicians and three groups of musically inexperienced subjects (gymnasts, Psychology 101 students, and video game players) on sequence memory and word familiarity tasks. By including skilled gymnasts who began studying their craft by age six, video game players, and Psychology 101 students as comparison groups, we attempted to control for some of the ways skilled musicians may differ from participants drawn from the general population in terms of gross motor skills and intensive experience in a highly skilled domain from an early age. We found that musicians displayed longer immediate memory spans than the comparison groups on auditory presentation conditions of the sequence reproductive span task. No differences were observed between the four groups on the visual conditions of the sequence memory task. These results provide additional converging support to recent findings showing that early musical experience and activity-dependent learning may selectively affect verbal rehearsal processes and the allocation of attention in sequence memory tasks

    This report compares policy learning processes in 11 European countries. Based on the country reports that were produced by the national teams of the INSPIRES project, this paper develops an argument that connects problem pressure and politicization to learning in different labor market innovations. In short, we argue that learning efforts are most likely to impact on policy change if there is a certain problem pressure that clearly necessitates political action. On the other hand, if problem pressure is very low, or so high that governments need to react immediately, chances are low that learning impacts on policy change. The second part of our argument contends that learning impacts on policy change especially if a problem is not very politicized, i.e. there are no main conflicts concerning a reform, because then, solutions are wound up in the search for a compromise. Our results confirm our first hypothesis regarding the connection between problem pressure and policy learning. Governments learn indeed up to a certain degree of problem pressure. However, once political action becomes really urgent, i.e. in anti-crisis policies, there is no time and room for learning. On the other hand, learning occurred independently from the politicization of problem. In fact, in countries that have a consensual political system, learning occurred before the decision on a reform, whereas in majoritarian systems, learning happened after the adoption of a policy during the process of implementation

    L4Fe2As2Te1-xO4-yFy (L = Pr, Sm, Gd): a layered oxypnictide superconductor with Tc up to 45 K

    The synthesis, structural and physical properties of iron lanthanide oxypnictide superconductors, L4Fe2As2Te1-xO4 (L = Pr, Sm, Gd), with transition temperature at ~ 25 K are reported. Single crystals have been grown at high pressure using cubic anvil technique. The crystal structure consists of layers of L2O2 tetrahedra separated by alternating layers of chains of Te and of Fe2As2 tetrahedra: -L2O2-Te-L2O2-Fe2As2-L2O2-Te-L2O2- (space group: I4/mmm, a ~ 4.0, c ~ 29.6 {\AA}). Substitution of oxygen by fluorine increases the critical temperature, e.g. in Gd4Fe2As2Te1-xOyF4-y up to 45 K. Magnetic torque measurements reveal an anisotropy of the penetration depths of ~31.Comment: 8 figures, 4 table

    Neurocognitive factors in sensory restoration of early deafness: a connectome model

    Progress in biomedical technology (cochlear, vestibular, and retinal implants) has led to remarkable success in neurosensory restoration, particularly in the auditory system. However, outcomes vary considerably, even after accounting for comorbidity-for example, after cochlear implantation, some deaf children develop spoken language skills approaching those of their hearing peers, whereas other children fail to do so. Here, we review evidence that auditory deprivation has widespread effects on brain development, affecting the capacity to process information beyond the auditory system. After sensory loss and deafness, the brain's effective connectivity is altered within the auditory system, between sensory systems, and between the auditory system and centres serving higher order neurocognitive functions. As a result, congenital sensory loss could be thought of as a connectome disease, with interindividual variability in the brain's adaptation to sensory loss underpinning much of the observed variation in outcome of cochlear implantation. Different executive functions, sequential processing, and concept formation are at particular risk in deaf children. A battery of clinical tests can allow early identification of neurocognitive risk factors. Intervention strategies that address these impairments with a personalised approach, taking interindividual variations into account, will further improve outcomes

    Edge channel confinement in a bilayer graphene nn-pp-nn quantum dot

    We combine electrostatic and magnetic confinement to define a quantum dot in bilayer graphene. The employed geometry couples nn-doped reservoirs to a pp-doped dot. At magnetic field values around B=2 B = 2~T, Coulomb blockade is observed. This demonstrates that the coupling of the co-propagating modes at the pp-nn interface is weak enough to form a tunnel barrier, facilitating transport of single charge carriers onto the dot. This result may be of use for quantum Hall interferometry experiments

    Complete quantum-inspired framework for computational fluid dynamics

    Computational fluid dynamics is both an active research field and a key tool for industrial applications. The central challenge is to simulate turbulent flows in complex geometries, a compute-power intensive task due to the large vector dimensions required by discretized meshes. Here, we propose a full-stack solver for incompressible fluids with memory and runtime scaling polylogarithmically in the mesh size. Our framework is based on matrix-product states, a powerful compressed representation of quantum states. It is complete in that it solves for flows around immersed objects of diverse geometries, with non-trivial boundary conditions, and can retrieve the solution directly from the compressed encoding, i.e. without ever passing through the expensive dense-vector representation. These developments provide a toolbox with potential for radically more efficient simulations of real-life fluid problems

    Charge-Stripe Order and Superconductivity in Ir1xPtxTe2\mathrm{Ir_{1-x}Pt_xTe_2}

    A combined resistivity and hard x-ray diffraction study of superconductivity and charge ordering in Ir1xPtxTe2\mathrm{Ir_{1-x}Pt_xTe_2}, as a function of Pt substitution and externally applied hydrostatic pressure, is presented. Experiments are focused on samples near the critical composition xc0.045x_c\sim 0.045 where competition and switching between charge order and superconductivity is established. We show that charge order as a function of pressure in Ir0.95Pt0.05Te2\mathrm{Ir_{0.95}Pt_{0.05}Te_{2}} is preempted - and hence triggered - by a structural transition. Charge ordering appears uniaxially along the short crystallographic (1,0,1) domain axis with a (15,0,15)\mathrm{(\frac{1}{5},0,\frac{1}{5})} modulation. Based on these results we draw a charge-order phase diagram and discuss the relation between stripe ordering and superconductivity.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures: Accepted in Scientific Report

    La vérité des reliques selon Charles Borromée : réforme interne ou aiguillon protestant ?

    Sous le feu des critiques protestantes, le Concile de Trente, au cours de la XXVe et dernière session (3-4 décembre 1563), proclame solennellement la légitimité de la vénération due aux reliques : condamnant toute forme de critique à l’égard du culte des saints et des pèlerinages auprès de leurs corps, il enjoint aux évêques d’enseigner à leurs fidèles « les honneurs dus aux reliques », de réprimer toute forme d’« abus » et de « superstition » et de s’assurer de leur authenticité. Toutefois, dans la mise en œuvre concrète du décret, le contrôle épiscopal des reliques relève plus de l’exigence de réforme interne de l’Église que du combat anti-protestant. Cette contribution met en lumière la place de la réforme interne et de la polémique anti-protestante dans l’interprétation du décret tridentin donnée dans l’archevêché de Milan, pendant l’épiscopat de Charles Borromée (1564- 1584), en prenant en considération la méthode prescrite et quelques exemples de sa pratique de la reconnaissance.

    Host range of mammalian orthoreovirus type 3 widening to alpine chamois

    Mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRV) type 3 have been recently identified in human and several animal hosts, highlighting the apparent lack of species barriers. Here we report the identification and genetic characterization of MRVs strains in alpine chamois, one of the most abundant wild ungulate in the Alps. Serological survey was also performed by MRV neutralization test in chamois population during five consecutive years (2008-2012). Three novel MRVs were isolated on cell culture from chamois lung tissues. No respiratory or other clinical symptoms neither lung macroscopic lesions were observed in the chamois population. MRV strains were classified as MRV-3 within the lineage III, based on S1 phylogeny, and were closely related to Italian strains identified in dog, bat and diarrheic pig. The full genome sequence was obtained by next-generation sequencing and phylogenetic analyses showed that other segments were more similar to MRVs of different geographic locations, serotypes and hosts, including human, highlighting genome reassortment and lack of host specific barriers. By using serum neutralization test, a high prevalence of MRV-3 antibodies was observed in chamois population throughout the monitored period, showing an endemic level of infection and suggesting a self-maintenance of MRV and/or a continuous spill-over of infection from other animal species
