    Theory of rotational processes in perpendicular media and application to anisotropy measurement

    Numerical and analytical calculations of rotational process in perpendicular recording media are presented. The work supports recent experimental studies that suggest that the measurement of rotational magnetization processes can be used to determine the value of the anisotropy constant. An expression for the rotational magnetization for a noninteracting system is derived taking into account the dispersion of K and the easy-axis orientation. The calculations show that the experiments determine the mean value of H-K, essentially independent of the angular dispersion. A numerical (Monte-Carlo based) micromagnetic model is used to study the effects of magnetostatic and exchange interactions at nonzero temperatures. It is shown that for small values of KV/kT, irreversible magnetization processes take place, which precludes the use of the rotational magnetization method to determine K values. This effect is enhanced by the presence of the magnetostatic interaction. However, the presence of exchange interactions is found to enforce coherent rotation in small fields, reducing the irreversible processes and allowing the determination of H-K. Under these circumstances, it is shown that the exchange does not significantly affect the value of HK, and that a well-defined demagnetization correction of 4piM is appropriate. Finally, a comparison with experimental data gives good agreement for multilayer and granular media and shows the role of domain formation on the rotational magnetization process

    Assessment of facial asymmetry before and after the surgical repair of cleft lip in unilateral cleft lip and palate cases

    This study was performed to assess facial asymmetry in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) before and after primary lip repair. Three-dimensional facial images of 30 UCLP cases (mean age 3.7 ± 0.8 months) captured 1–2 days before surgery and 4 months after surgery using stereophotogrammetry were analysed. A generic mesh – a mathematical facial mask consisting of thousands of points (vertices) – was conformed on the three-dimensional images. Average preoperative and postoperative conformed facial meshes were obtained and mirrored by reflecting on the lateral plane. Facial asymmetry was assessed by measuring the distances between the corresponding vertices of the superimposed facial meshes. Asymmetries were further examined in three directions: horizontal, vertical, and anteroposterior. Preoperatively, the philtrum and bridge of the nose were deviated towards the non-cleft side. The maximum vertical asymmetry was at the upper lip. The greatest anteroposterior asymmetry was at the alar base and in the paranasal area. The overall facial asymmetry improved markedly after surgery. Residual anteroposterior asymmetry was noted at the alar base, upper lip, and cheek on the cleft slide. In conclusion, dense correspondence analysis provided an insight into the anatomical reasons for the residual dysmorphology following the surgical repair of cleft lip for future surgical consideration

    We investigate the implications and logical relations between progressivity (a principle of distributive justice) and merging-proofness (a strategic principle) in taxation. By means of two characterization results, we show that these two principles are intimately related, despite their different nature. In particular, we show that, in the presence of continuity and consistency (a widely accepted framework for taxation) progressivity implies merging-proofness and that the converse implication holds if we add an additional strategic principle extending the scope of merging-proofness to a multilateral setting.     On the equivalence between progressive taxation and inequality reduction

    We establish the precise connections between progressive taxation and inequality reduction, in a setting where the level of tax revenue to be raised is endogenously fixed and tax schemes are balanced. We show that, in contrast with the traditional literature on taxation, the equivalence between inequality reduction and the combination of progressivity and income order preservation does not always hold in this setting.     Observation of enhanced optical spring damping in a macroscopic mechanical resonator and application for parametric instability control in advanced gravitational-wave detectors

    We show that optical spring damping in an optomechanical resonator can be enhanced by injecting a phase delay in the laser frequency-locking servo to rotate the real and imaginary components of the optical spring constant. This enhances damping at the expense of optical rigidity. We demonstrate enhanced parametric damping which reduces the Q factor of a 0.1-kg-scale resonator from 1.3Ă—10^5 to 6.5Ă—10^3. By using this technique adequate optical spring damping can be obtained to damp parametric instability predicted for advanced laser interferometer gravitational-wave detectors

    Pseudo-gap features of intrinsic tunneling in (HgBr_2)-Bi2212 single crystals

    The c-axis tunneling properties of both pristine Bi2212 and its HgBr2_2 intercalate have been measured in the temperature range 4.2 - 250 K. Lithographically patterned 7-10 unit-cell heigh mesa structures on the surfaces of these single crystals were investigated. Clear SIS-like tunneling curves for current applied in the c\it c-axis direction have been observed. The dynamic conductance dI/I/dV(V)V(V) shows both sharp peaks corresponding to a superconducting gap edge and a dip feature beyond the gap, followed by a wide maximum, which persists up to a room temperature. Shape of the temperature dependence of the {\it c}-axis resistance does not change after the intercalation suggesting that a coupling between CuO2\rm CuO_2-bilayers has little effect on the pseudogap.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; presented at the Second Int Conf.
