Experimental and analytical results of tangential blowing applied to a subsonic V/STOL inlet
Engine inlets for subsonic V/STOL aircraft must operate over a wide range of conditions without internal flow separation. Experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of tangential blowing to maintain attached flow to high angles of attack. The inlet had a relatively thin lip with a blowing slot located either on the lip or in the diffuser. The height and width of these slots was varied. Experimentally determined flow separation boundaries showed that lip blowing achieved higher angle of attack capability than diffuser blowing. This capability was achieved with the largest slot circumferential extent and either of the two slot heights. Predicted (analytical) separation boundaries showed good agreement except at the highest angles of attack
Static internal performance of a single-engine onaxisymmetric-nozzle vaned-thrust-reverser design with thrust modulation capabilities
An investigation has been conducted at wind-off conditions in the stati-test facility of the Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel. The tests were conducted on a single-engine reverser configuration with partial and full reverse-thrust modulation capabilities. The reverser design had four ports with equal areas. These ports were angled outboard 30 deg from the vertical impart of a splay angle to the reverse exhaust flow. This splaying of reverser flow was intended to prevent impingement of exhaust flow on empennage surfaces and to help avoid inlet reingestion of exhaust gas when the reverser is integrated into an actual airplane configuration. External vane boxes were located directly over each of the four ports to provide variation of reverser efflux angle from 140 deg to 26 deg (measured forward from the horizontal reference axis). The reverser model was tested with both a butterfly-type inner door and an internal slider door to provide area control for each individual port. In addition, main nozzle throat area and vector angle were varied to examine various methods of modulating thrust levels. Other model variables included vane box configuration (four or six vanes per box), orientation of external vane boxes with respect to internal port walls (splay angle shims), and vane box sideplates. Nozzle pressure ratio was varied from 2.0 approximately 7.0
High-density support matrices: Key to the deep borehole disposal of spent nuclear fuel
Deep (4–5 km) boreholes are emerging as a safe, secure, environmentally sound and potentially cost-effective option for disposal of high-level radioactive wastes, including plutonium. One reason this option has not been widely accepted for spent fuel is because stacking the containers in a borehole could create load stresses threatening their integrity with potential for releasing highly mobile radionuclides like 129I before the borehole is filled and sealed. This problem can be overcome by using novel high-density support matrices deployed as fine metal shot along with the containers. Temperature distributions in and around the disposal are modelled to show how decay heat from the fuel can melt the shot within weeks of disposal to give a dense liquid in which the containers are almost weightless. Finally, within a few decades, this liquid will cool and solidify, entombing the waste containers in a base metal sarcophagus sealed into the host rock
Translational energy dependence of O+(4S) + N2 → NO+ + N from thermal energies to 30 eV c.m.

An 0 + (4S) source which produces less than 0.06% excited states is described. Cross sections for the NO+ + N product channel decrease with increasing energy below 0.25 eV but increase with energy at higher energies
Fracture of a viscous liquid
When a viscous liquid hits a pool of liquid of same nature, the impact region
is hollowed by the shock. Its bottom becomes extremely sharp if increasing the
impact velocity, and we report that the curvature at that place increases
exponentially with the flow velocity, in agreement with a theory by Jeong and
Moffatt. Such a law defines a characteristic velocity for the collapse of the
tip, which explains both the cusp-like shape of this region, and the
instability of the cusp if increasing (slightly) the impact velocity. Then, a
film of the upper phase is entrained inside the pool. We characterize the
critical velocity of entrainment of this phase and compare our results with
recent predictions by Eggers

A Search for Stars of Very Low Metal Abundance. VI. Detailed Abundances of 313 Metal-Poor Stars
We present radial velocities, equivalent widths, model atmosphere parameters,
and abundances or upper limits for 53 species of 48 elements derived from high
resolution optical spectroscopy of 313 metal-poor stars. A majority of these
stars were selected from the metal-poor candidates of the HK Survey of Beers,
Preston, and Shectman. We derive detailed abundances for 61% of these stars for
the first time. Spectra were obtained during a 10-year observing campaign using
the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectrograph on the Magellan Telescopes at
Las Campanas Observatory, the Robert G. Tull Coude Spectrograph on the Harlan
J. Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory, and the High Resolution
Spectrograph on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We perform
a standard LTE abundance analysis using MARCS model atmospheres, and we apply
line-by-line statistical corrections to minimize systematic abundance
differences arising when different sets of lines are available for analysis. We
identify several abundance correlations with effective temperature. A
comparison with previous abundance analyses reveals significant differences in
stellar parameters, which we investigate in detail. Our metallicities are, on
average, lower by approx. 0.25 dex for red giants and approx. 0.04 dex for
subgiants. Our sample contains 19 stars with [Fe/H] < -3.5, 84 stars with
[Fe/H] < -3.0, and 210 stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5. Detailed abundances are
presented here or elsewhere for 91% of the 209 stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5 as
estimated from medium resolution spectroscopy by Beers, Preston, and Shectman.

Flight Acoustic Testing and For the Rotorcraft Noise Data Acquisition Model (RNM)
Two acoustic flight tests have been conducted on a remote test range at Eglin Air Force Base in the panhandle of Florida. The first was the "Acoustics Week" flight test conducted in September 2003. The second was the NASA Heavy Lift Rotorcraft Acoustics Flight Test conducted in October-November 2005. Benchmark acoustic databases were obtained for a number of rotorcraft and limited fixed wing vehicles for a variety of flight conditions. The databases are important for validation of acoustic prediction programs such as the Rotorcraft Noise Model (RNM), as well as for the development of low noise flight procedures and for environmental impact assessments. An overview of RNM capabilities and a detailed description of the RNM/ART (Acoustic Repropagation Technique) process are presented. The RNM/ART process is demonstrated using measured acoustic data for the MD600N. The RNM predictions for a level flyover speed sweep show the highest SEL noise levels on the flight track centerline occurred at the slowest vehicle speeds. At these slower speeds, broadband noise content is elevated compared to noise levels obtained at the higher speeds. A descent angle sweep shows that, in general, ground noise levels increased with increasing descent rates. Vehicle orientation in addition to vehicle position was found to significantly affect the RNM/ART creation of source noise semi-spheres for vehicles with highly directional noise characteristics and only mildly affect those with weak acoustic directionality. Based on these findings, modifications are proposed for RNM/ART to more accurately define vehicle and rotor orientation
