Mutual grooming in cucujoid beetles (Coleoptera: Silvanidae)
Mutual grooming in two genera of silvanid beetles is described, and appears to be the first report of this behavior in the order Coleoptera. In Uleiota debilis (LeConte), allogrooming recipients were either stationary or moved away during the acts, without solicitation or facilitation. In Nausibius major Zimmermann, allogrooming was much more extensive and the individual being groomed appeared to facilitate the process by immobility or by changes in posture, there were no recognizable sexual overtones, no solicitations, and no avoidance movements. Gregarious behaviors of some other silvanid beetles are reviewed

This is a catalogue of 23 described and 6 undescribed genera, and 48 described and 157 undescribed species of West Indian Anthribidae distributed from the Bahamas to Grenada. Each described genus has author, date, page, type species and how designated, World distribution, number of World species, and synonyms. Each described species has author, date, page, original generic name if a transfer has occurred, type locality, sex and location of type(s) if known, synonyms, and island-by-island distribution. New taxa are numbered, with data on museum location and island distribution. There are brief comments on New World distributions as they relate to the Antilles, and on missing Suffrian and Wolfrum types

Benchmark solutions for the galactic ion transport equations with spatial and energy coupling
In order to anticipate future space shielding requirements, NASA has initiated an effort to formulate computational methods to simulate radiation effects in space. As part of the program, numerical transport algorithms have been developed for the deterministic Boltzman equation describing galactic cosmic ray (GCR) interactions with matter. It thus becomes necessary to assess the accuracy of proposed deterministic algorithms. For this reason, analytical benchmark solutions to mathematically tractable galactic cosmic ray equations have recently been obtained. Even though these problems involve simplifying assumptions of the associated physics, they still contain the essential features of the basic transport processes. The solutions obtained are features of the basic transport processes. The solutions obtained are compared to results from numerical algorithms in order to ensure proper coding and to provide a measure of the accuracy of the numerical methods used in the algorithm. For the first time, mathematical methods have been applied to the galactic ion transport (GIT) equations in the straight ahead approximation with constant nuclear properties. The approach utilizes a Laplace transforms inversion yielding a closed form benchmark solution which is also computationally efficient

The natural history of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is inextricably associated with mucosal surfaces. The vast preponderance of primary infections occur following mucosal exposure to infectious virions, and the high seroprevalence of HCMV throughout the world is due to long-term excretion of HCMV in bodily fluids from multiple mucosal sites. Accumulating evidence presents a model where the earliest virus-host interactions following infection dictate the long-term pattern of infection, alter innate immune responses that skew adaptive responses to enable persistence within an immune host, and are essential for reinfection of a host with prior immunity. HCMV has evolved a complex repertoire of viral functions fine-tuned to manipulate the immune environment both locally at the sites of infection and systemically within an infected host. Collectively, viral immune modulation represents a significant impediment for an HCMV vaccine. As HCMV can disseminate beyond mucosal surfaces to reinfect immune hosts, it may not matter whether prior immunity results from prior infection or immunization. A better understanding of the earliest virus-hosts interactions at mucosal surfaces may identify elements of the viral proteome that are especially susceptible to vaccine-mediated disruption and prevent challenge virus from disseminating to distal sites, particularly the maternal-fetal interface
