    TSUNAMI MITIGATION IN HAWAI`I

    Get PDF
Hawai`i has a long, though sporadic history of deadly tsunami attacks.Since the 1946 tsunami disaster the State of Hawaii has developed increasingly sophisticated and effective mitigation strategies. The evolution and operation of these strategies is described in this paper. Tsunamis will no longer be Hawai`i’s deadliest natural hazard

    Holographic storage using shift multiplexing

    Get PDF
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a new multiplexing method for volume holographic storage using a single reference beam that is composed of multiple plane waves or is a spherical wave. We multiplex the holograms by shifting the recording material or the recording/readout head. The volume properties of the recording medium allow selective readout of holograms stored in successive overlapping locations. High storage densities can be achieved with a relatively simple implementation by use of the new method

An 1842 reprint containing two reports detailing the events surrounding the 1834 mob destruction of the Ursuline Convent in Charlestown, MA. The first report discusses the public responsibility and duty of the State to protect its citizens and their property, regardless of social or religious affiliation, from unjust actions. The second report, produced by a select committee of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, discusses the merits of a petition for the Commonwealth to indemnify the Sisters of the Ursuline Order for their loss. Boston: Reprinted by Samuel N. Dickinson, 1842. See The Trial of John R. Buzzell by Lemuel Shaw, LL.D, published at the time of the incident (1834) for a detailed account of the mob destruction of the Convent and the subsequent trial of Buzzell and his fellow co-conspirators

The Scientific Evaluation of New Claims

In the scientific world, the burden of proof for new claims is on the claimant. This is consistent with probabilities, because most new suggestions do turn out to be false. There is no single path from claim to proof This article illustrates four typical stages of the process, using the example of a claim for effectiveness of a new treatment. They are labeled "Tentative or Suggestive Evidence, " "Promising or Interesting, " "Probably Effective, " and "Established Effectiveness. " Each is based on characteristic levels of evidence. A few clues for identifying naive enthusiasts or outright frauds who try to shortcut these stages include claims of being ignored or rejected by an "establishment" that is too self-interested or set in its ways to consider new approaches; claims of special skills that others lack; vagueness about how the treatment has been evaluated and tested; and expressions such as "amazing, " "unique, " "special, " and "never dreamed of. Statewide, dairying usually ranks about fourth in importance as a source of agricultural income in Tennessee (19:1).* Annual receipts averaged about 85 million dollars for the five-year period 1959-1963. There were about 476,000 dairy cows in Tennessee in 1963. Average milk production per Tennessee cow that year was 4,700 pounds, while the average American cow produced 7,545 pounds. Research has suggested that production per cow of less than 6,000 pounds is unprofitable, and that cows producing below that amount ought to be culled and replaced. Henry County is located in the northwest corner of the Western Division of Tennessee. It is bordered by the state of Kentucky to the north and the Tennessee River to the east. The agriculture of the county is rather diversified, a little more than one-half of the agricultural income coming from the sale of livestock and livestock products and a little under-one-half coming from the sale of crops. Dairying ranks second in importance and is exceeded only in dollar value by the sale of cattle and calves (5:217)

Leading By Example: Creating Motivation That Fosters Positive Change in Young People

It is not what one has in life; rather, what is left as the legacy. Personally I have received many awards. However, I feel so much better when I help people receive their own awards. Now, I want to use positive language and positive action to help motivate young people, encouraging them to achieve their own success, as well as foster success in others. Oftentimes people get wrapped up in personal issues and forget about others. The purpose of this paper is twofold. One is to shed light on the issue of self-motivation or lack of self-motivation in young people. The second, and primary purpose of this work, is to understand and to create a framework for others who struggle with being successful on a daily basis, and to discover methods of teaching self-motivation. The literature reveals that this type of work is possible. Others have this idea and are trying to put it into practice. Young people want to be motivated. While there is much work done in this area, there is no cohesiveness to bringing this information together and applying it, operationalizing this information in practice. The present study is qualitative in design, using three settings to gather data. Participants included a group of high school football players who agreed to engage in a focus group following a practice and several games. The second source of information came from discourse on the issue of motivation. The third source came from snapshot data following lectures on motivation in selected school sites in Florida and Kentucky. Information was recorded and analyzed for common themes. Results indicated that the act of purposely motivating others had a positive effect on increasing individual motivation
