Kyrie eleison is the first of five chants that are common to all eucharistic celebrations, belonging to the Mass Ordinary, as well as the Gloria, Credo (at major solemnities), Sanctus and Agnus Dei. Although the text remains the same, these chants can assume different melodies depending on the festivity, melodies of variable popularity and which may also linked to local practices or enjoy limited circulation. A survey of this chant from Portuguese chant manuscripts, dating from between circa 1400 and 1650, enabled the bringing together of forty-five manuscript sources. The objective of this study was the identification and analysis of these melodies with the purpose of understanding the way in which this chant was adopted in Portugal.publishersversionpublishe

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 by the authors. The increasing demand for natural products has led to biotechnological vanillin production, which requires the recovery of vanillin (and vanillyl alcohol at trace concentrations, as in botanical vanillin) from the bioconversion broth, free from potential contaminants: the substrate and metabolites of bioconversion. This work discusses the recovery and fractionation of bio-vanillin, from a bioconversion broth, by pervaporation and by vacuum distillation, coupled with fractionated condensation. The objective was to recover vanillin free of potential contaminants, with maximised fluxes and selectivity for vanillin against water and minimised energy consumption per mass of vanillin recovered. In vacuum distillation fractionated condensation, adding several consecutive water pulses to the feed increased the percentage of recovered vanillin. In pervaporation-fractionated condensation and vacuum distillation-fractionated condensation processes, it was possible to recover vanillin and traces of vanillyl alcohol without the presence of potential contaminants. Vacuum distillation–experiments presented higher vanillin fluxes than pervaporation fractionated condensation experiments, 2.7 ± 0.1 g·m−2 h−1 and 1.19 ± 0.01 g·m−2 h−1, respectively. However, pervaporation fractionated condensation assures a selectivity of vanillin against water of 4.5 on the pervaporation step (acting as a preconcentration step) and vacuum distillation fractionated condensation requires a higher energy consumption per mass of vanillin recovered when compared with pervaporation– fractionated condensation, 2727 KWh kgVAN−1 at 85 °C and 1361 KWh kgVAN−1 at 75 °C, respectively.publishersversionpublishe

[ENG] The occupation of public space plays a fundamental role in shaping any society. Throughout history, there has been a marked disparity in men's and women's access and control over these spaces, which has translated into inequalities in power structures and cultural constructions. Occupation of public space involves not only physical presence in squares, streets and buildings, but also the exercise of voice, visibility and influence in decisions that affect the community. The importance of the occupation of urban space for any social collective lies in the fact that it allows self-definition, the narration of one's own experience from within. The presence of all kinds of identities in a common space not only makes minority realities visible, but also normalizes and integrates them within other realities that are designed to highlight them. Building an inclusive community allows people who share certain features of their experience to find support and understanding. These safe spaces are also necessary for people who may be experiencing violence or discrimination. Having a voice and being heard from the centre of society allows people who, for one reason or another, fall outside the narrow confines of normativity to speak and to demand rules that are adapted to all kinds of experiences. However, throughout history there has been a tendency to exclude all those identities that do not fit the "white man" label, and this censorship in the public sphere has been one of its most powerful weapons. In the absence of a balanced presence of co-existing realities, hatred, fear of the unknown, prejudice, clichés... are encouraged. In this project, we will use the literary figure of the flaneur, or rather that of its female namesake, the flâneuse, as an argument to demonstrate both the process and the result of the public exclusion of women. Through this figure, we will address dualities such as the difference between "the man in the street" and "the woman in the street", or the narrative construction around prostitutes

Parental positive meaning-making when caregiving for children with asthma

Providing informal care to children/adolescents with chronic conditions has been associated with high levels of caregiving burden and impaired quality of life (QoL); however, parents can also experience uplifts which, by facilitating the attribution of positive meanings to caregiving, may contribute to better adaptation outcomes. The present study aimed at examining the direct and indirect links, via positive reframing as a coping strategy, between caregiving uplifts and quality of life (QoL) of parents who have a child/adolescent with asthma, as well as the invariance of the mediation model across children’s age groups and asthma severity levels. A total of 180 parents of children/adolescents aged 8-18 reported their experience of caregiving uplifts (Revised Burden Measure), the use of positive reframing coping (Brief Cope) and their QoL (WHOQOL-Bref). Structural equation modeling showed a good fit for the mediation model (χ2/df=1.74, CFI=.95, RMSEA=.06), which explained 14% of the variability of parents’ QoL. The caregiving uplifts were positively associated with positive reframing coping (β=.19, p=.02), which in turn was positively associated with QoL (β=.36, p<.01). No direct effect of uplifts on parents’ QoL was found, but the indirect effect via positive reframing coping was statistically significant (β=.07, BC95%CI=.01/.14). Multi-group analyses demonstrated the strong structural invariance of the model across age groups (Δχ2=.89, p=.35) and asthma severity levels (Δχ2=1.91, p=.17). These results suggest that psychological interventions focused on recognizing and valuing caregiving uplifts and on positive reappraisal of the stressful situation may support more adaptive coping processes and improve parents’ QoL

Quality of Life and Adjustment in Youths with Asthma: The Contributions of Family Rituals and the Family Environment

    Get PDF
This cross-sectional study explored the relationships among family ritual meaning, cohesion, conflict, and health-related quality of life (both specific to chronic health condi- tions and in general), and the emotional and behavioral problems reported by youths with asthma. Participants included 149 Portuguese children and adolescents between the ages of 8 and 18 who had been diagnosed with asthma and attended outpatient services at three public hospitals. The results showed that stronger family ritual meaning predicted a more positive family environment (i.e., higher cohesion levels and lower conflict levels), better health-related quality of life, and fewer emotional and behavior problems in youths. Fur- thermore, family cohesion and conflict mediated the links between family ritual meaning and health-related quality of life, and emotional and behavioral problems. These results did not change after controlling for participant age, gender, and asthma severity. The find- ings of this study suggest that family ritual meaning contributes to the adaptation of youths with asthma via its positive association with the family environment. The implica- tions for multicontextual interventions with families are briefly discussed with regard to the positive role of family rituals and of their potential as a modifiable factor in families with increased health challenges
