    She Left the Web, She Left the Loom : The Extent of Agency in The Lady of Shalott

    Alfred, Lord Tennyson began writing The Lady of Shalott in a time of tremendous social and political change for England. Ten years after it was written, in 1842, a new, heavily-revised version of the poem was published. The Lady\u27s agency (or lack of it) within the two versions of the poem fluctuates; in parts of the 1842 poem, she gains more control over herself, only to lose some of the agency she possessed in the 1832 poem. This paper shows that even after his major editing, Tennyson\u27s depiction of the Lady, while exhibiting some signs of power, perpetuates the lack of agency she possessed in the original poem; this idea is exhibited in the elements that Tennyson added to the original myth (the curse, the images of the mirror and the loom, the change in the Lady\u27s family, and the Lady\u27s use of song), as well as the figure of Lancelot

    Enhancing the First-year Experience Program for Community College Students: Creating a Cohort Model to Encourage Success, Engagement, and Sense of Belonging

    Community Colleges are facing significant challenges to enrollment due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impending enrollment cliff which will require higher education administration to adapt, get creative, and lead change in recruiting and retention strategies. Using the Sense of Community Theory (Serason, 1974) and the Involvement Theory (Astin, 1984), this study aims to evaluate student success, engagement, and sense of belonging. Through a qualitative comparative case study, students in a Men of Color (MOC) cohort, a pre nursing (NUR) cohort, and a baseline group of students in the standard college success seminar course enrollment were evaluated using in vivo, value and pattern coding of course assessments, reflections, and semi-structured focus groups. To provide more detailed and rich comparisons, course completion, course success, and student retention quantitative data were incorporated into each case analysis. The research findings indicate that the cohort model two-semester course format had a positive impact on student success, engagement, and sense of belonging. From this the researchers propose several recommendations for community colleges. First, it is recommended community colleges use a cohort model in assigning students to first year experience programs that are either career focused for students who identify a discipline of study or some other affinity for students who do not identify a discipline of study. Second, it is recommended that community colleges incorporate campus engagement activities within the first-year experience program and incentivize students to attend the activities. Third, it is recommended students receive ongoing follow-up not only during the first year at the college but through their credential completion to encourage retention. Fourth, it is recommended the instructors for the college success seminar course be well-trained, vetted, and highly engaging individuals to achieve the goals

    Tumor-associated and immunochemotherapy-dependent long-term alterations of the peripheral blood NK cell compartment in DLBCL patients

    Natural Killer (NK) cells are a key component of tumor immunosurveillance and thus play an important role in rituximab-dependent killing of lymphoma cells via an antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) mechanism. We evaluated the phenotypic and functional assets of peripheral blood NK cell subsets in 32 newly-diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients and in 27 healthy controls. We further monitored long-term modifications of patient NK cells for up to 12 months after rituximab-based immunochemotherapy. At diagnosis, patients showed a higher percentage of CD56dim and CD16C NK cells, and a higher frequency of GrzBC cells in CD56dim, CD56bright, and CD16C NK cell subsets than healthy controls. Conversely, DLBCL NK cell killing and interferon g (IFNg) production capability were comparable to those derived from healthy subjects. Notably, NK cells from refractory/relapsed patients exhibited a lower “natural” cytotoxicity. A marked and prolonged therapy-induced reduction of both “natural” and CD16- dependent NK cytotoxic activities was accompanied by the down-modulation of CD16 and NKG2D activating receptors, particularly in the CD56dim subset. However, reduced NK cell killing was not associated with defective lytic granule content or IFNg production capability. This study firstly describes tumor-associated and therapy-induced alterations of the systemic NK cell compartment in DLBCL patients. As these alterations may negatively impact rituximab-based therapy efficacy, our work may provide useful information for improving immunochemotherapeutic strategies

    The proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-lattice relaxation rate (R1) of hydrated sands is often used to determine porosity characteristics of near-surface aquifers using magnetic resonance sounding. Large variations in R1 have been reported in laboratory measurements on hydrated sands. To understand these variations, the R1 values of several fully hydrated sands were studied as a function of grain diameter (d) and magnetic field strength (BB0). We conclude the variations are a consequence of trace paramagnetic metals in the sand grains. R1 values from magnetic resonance sounding data should not be used to predict void size in aquifers unless the exact chemical composition of the grains is known

    M. tuberculosis Ser/Thr Protein Kinase D Phosphorylates an Anti-Anti–Sigma Factor Homolog

    Receptor Ser/Thr protein kinases are candidates for sensors that govern developmental changes and disease processes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), but the functions of these kinases are not established. Here, we show that Mtb protein kinase (Pkn) D overexpression alters transcription of numerous bacterial genes, including Rv0516c, a putative anti-anti–sigma factor, and genes regulated by sigma factor F. The PknD kinase domain directly phosphorylated Rv0516c, but no other sigma factor regulator, in vitro. In contrast, the purified PknB and PknE kinase domains phosphorylated distinct sigma regulators. Rather than modifying a consensus site, PknD phosphorylated Rv0516c in vitro and in vivo on Thr2 in a unique N-terminal extension. This phosphorylation inhibited Rv0516c binding in vitro to a homologous anti-anti–sigma factor, Rv2638. These results support a model in which signals transmitted through PknD alter the transcriptional program of Mtb by stimulating phosphorylation of a sigma factor regulator at an unprecedented control site

    Standardized image quality for 68Ga-DOTA-TATE PET/CT

    Background: Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with 68Gallium labeled somatostatin analogues (68Ga-DOTA-SSA) plays a key role in neuroendocrine tumor management. The impact of patient size on PET image quality is not well known for PET imaging with 68Ga-DOTA-SSA. The aim of this study is to propose a dose regimen based on patient size that optimizes image quality and yields sufficient image quality for diagnosis. Methods: Twenty-one patients (12 males, 9 females) were prospectively included for 68Gallium-DOTA-Tyr3-Octreotate (68Ga-DOTA-TATE) PET/CT, which was acquired in whole body list mode using 6 min per bed position (mbp). The list-mode events were randomly sampled to obtain 1 to 6 mbp PET reconstructions. For semi-quantitative assessment of image quality, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was measured in the liver.     First-in-Human Segmental Esophageal Reconstruction Using a Bioengineered Mesenchymal Stromal Cell-Seeded Implant

    INTRODUCTION: Resection and reconstruction of the esophagus remains fraught with morbidity and mortality. Recently, data from a porcine reconstruction model revealed that segmental esophageal reconstruction using an autologous mesenchymal stromal cell-seeded polyurethane graft (Cellspan esophageal implant [CEI]) can facilitate esophageal regrowth and regeneration. To this end, a patient requiring a full circumferential esophageal segmental reconstruction after a complex multiorgan tumor resection was approved for an investigational treatment under the Food and Drug Administration Expanded Access Use (Investigational New Drug 17402). METHODS: Autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (Ad-MSCs) were isolated from the Emergency Investigational New Drug patient approximately 4 weeks before surgery from an adipose tissue biopsy specimen. The Ad-MSCs were grown and expanded under current Good Manufacturing Practice manufacturing conditions. The cells were then seeded onto a polyurethane fiber mesh scaffold (Cellspan scaffold) and cultured in a custom bioreactor to manufacture the final CEI graft. The cell-seeded scaffold was then shipped to the surgical site for surgical implantation. After removal of a tumor mass and a full circumferential 4 cm segment of the esophagus that was invaded by the tumor, the CEI was implanted by suturing the tubular CEI graft to both ends of the remaining native esophagus using end-to-end anastomosis. RESULTS: In this case report, we found that a clinical-grade, tissue-engineered esophageal graft can be used for segmental esophageal reconstruction in a human patient. This report reveals that the graft supports regeneration of the esophageal conduit. Histologic analysis of the tissue postmortem, 7.5 months after the implantation procedure, revealed complete luminal epithelialization and partial esophageal tissue regeneration. CONCLUSIONS: Autologous Ad-MSC seeded onto a tubular CEI tissue-engineered graft stimulates tissue regeneration following implantation after a full circumferential esophageal resection

    Joint Statement on Pediatric Education at Schools of Pharmacy

    Providing health care for children is a unique specialty, and pediatric patients represent approximately 25% of the population. Education of pharmacy students on patients across the lifespan is required by current Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education standards and outcomes; thus, it is essential that pharmacy students gain a proficiency in caring for children. A collaborative panel of pediatric faculty members from schools and colleges of pharmacy was established to review the current literature regarding pediatric education in Doctor of Pharmacy curricula and establish updated recommendations for the provision of pediatric pharmacy education. This statement outlines five recommendations supporting inclusion of pediatric content and skills in Doctor of Pharmacy curricula

    NGC 2770 - a supernova Ib factory?

    NGC 2770 has been the host of three supernovae of Type Ib during the last 10 years, SN 1999eh, SN 2007uy and SN 2008D. SN 2008D attracted special attention due to the serendipitous discovery of an associated X-ray transient. In this paper, we study the properties of NGC 2770 and specifically the three SN sites to investigate whether this galaxy is in any way peculiar to cause a high frequency of SNe Ib. We model the global SED of the galaxy from broadband data and derive a star-formation and SN rate comparable to the values of the Milky Way. We further study the galaxy using longslit spectroscopy covering the major axis and the three SN sites. From the spectroscopic study we find subsolar metallicities for the SN sites, a high extinction and a moderate star-formation rate. In a high resolution spectrum, we also detect diffuse interstellar bands in the line-of-sight towards SN 2008. A comparison of NGC 2770 to the global properties of a galaxy sample with high SN occurance (at least 3 SN in the last 100 years) suggests that NGC 2770 is not particularly destined to produce such an enhancement of observed SNe observed. Its properties are also very different from gamma-ray burst host galaxies. Statistical considerations on SN Ib detection rates give a probability of ~1.5% to find a galaxy with three Ib SNe detected in 10 years. The high number of rare Ib SNe in this galaxy is therefore likely to be a coincidence rather than special properties of the galaxy itself. NGC 2770 has a small irregular companion, NGC 2770B, which is highly starforming, has a very low mass and one of the lowest metallicities detected in the nearby universe as derived from longslit spectroscopy.
