Dipole-active optical phonons in YTiO_3: ellipsometry study and lattice-dynamics calculations
The anisotropic complex dielectric response was accurately extracted from
spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements at phonon frequencies for the three
principal crystallographic directions of an orthorhombic (Pbnm) YTiO_3 single
crystal. We identify all twenty five infrared-active phonon modes allowed by
symmetry, 7B_1u, 9B_2u, and 9B_3u, polarized along the c-, b-, and a-axis,
respectively. From a classical dispersion analysis of the complex dielectric
functions \tilde\epsilon(\omega) and their inverses -1/\tilde\epsilon(\omega)
we define the resonant frequencies, widths, and oscillator strengths of the
transverse (TO) and longitudinal (LO) phonon modes. We calculate
eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors of B_1u, B_2u, and B_3u normal modes and
suggest assignments of the TO phonon modes observed in our ellipsometry spectra
by comparing their frequencies and oscillator strengths with those resulting
from the present lattice-dynamics study. Based on these assignments, we
estimate dynamical effective charges of the atoms in the YTiO_3 lattice. We
find that, in general, the dynamical effective charges in YTiO_3 lattice are
typical for a family of perovskite oxides. By contrast to a ferroelectric
BaTiO_3, the dynamical effective charge of oxygen related to a displacement
along the c-axis does not show the anomalously large value. At the same time,
the dynamical effective charges of Y and ab-plane oxygen exhibit anisotropy,
indicating strong hybridization along the a-axis.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Second-order nonlinear optical properties induced by thermal poling in photonic oxide glasses and transparent glass-ceramics
In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in oxide glasses due to advances in lasers for information transport. Oxide glasses combine low cost of fabrication and good compatibility with silica glass fibers, which offer the opportunity for developing structures with nonlinear optical properties in integrated optical devices. The creation of an axial symmetry under thermal poling is currently necessary to induce Second-Order NonLinear (SONL) optical properties in glasses. A description of theoretical models which have been proposed for charge migration during thermal poling is presented. A review of SONL efficiencies which have been obtained for different glass compositions by this method is reported. Correlations between SONL properties and structural modifications under poling are also presented. Finally, we focus on the challenging fabrication of transparent glass-ceramic composites, especially when they are obtained by the precipitation of ferroelectric nanoparticle phases in the glassy matrix which adds the advantageous SONL properties of ferroelectric crystals
Peripheral blood T-cell signatures from high-resolution immune phenotyping of γδ and αβ T-cells in younger and older subjects in the Berlin Aging Study II
Background Aging and latent infection with Cytomegalovirus (CMV) are thought
to be major factors driving the immune system towards immunosenescence,
primarily characterized by reduced amounts of naïve T-cells and increased
memory T-cells, potentially associated with higher morbidity and mortality.
The composition of both major compartments, γδ as well as αβ T-cells, is
altered by age and CMV, but detailed knowledge of changes to the γδ subset is
currently limited. Results Here, we have surveyed a population of 73 younger
(23–35 years) and 144 older (62–85 years) individuals drawn from the Berlin
Aging Study II, investigating the distribution of detailed differentiation
phenotypes of both γδ and αβ T-cells. Correlation of frequencies and absolute
counts of the identified phenotypes with age and the presence of CMV revealed
a lower abundance of Vδ2-positive and a higher amount of Vδ1-positive cells.
We found higher frequencies of late-differentiated and lower frequencies of
early-differentiated cells in the Vδ1+ and Vδ1-Vδ2-, but not in the Vδ2+
populations in elderly CMV-seropositive individuals confirming the association
of these Vδ2-negative cells with CMV-immunosurveillance. We identified the
highest Vδ1:Vδ2 ratios in the CMV-seropositive elderly. The observed increased
CD4:CD8 ratios in the elderly were significantly lower in CMV-seropositive
individuals, who also possessed a lower naïve and a larger late-differentiated
compartment of CD8+ αβ T-cells, reflecting the consensus in the literature.
Conclusions Our findings illustrate in detail the strong influence of CMV on
the abundance and differentiation pattern of γδ T-cells as well as αβ T-cells
in older and younger people. Mechanisms responsible for the phenotypic
alterations in the γδ T-cell compartment, associated both with the presence of
CMV and with age require further clarification
Band-width control in a perovskite-type 3d^1 correlated metal Ca_1-xSr_xVO_3. II. Optical spectroscopy investigation
Optical conductivity spectra of single crystals of Ca_1-xSr_xVO_3 have been
studied to elucidate how the electronic behavior depends on the strength of the
electron correlation without changing the nominal number of electrons per
vanadium atom. The effective mass deduced by the analysis of the Drude-like
contribution do not show critical enhancement, even though the system is close
to the Mott transition. Besides the Drude-like contribution, two anomalous
features were observed in the optical conductivity spectra of the intraband
transition within the 3d band. These features can be assigned to transitions
involving the incoherent and coherent bands near the Fermi level. The large
spectral weight redistribution in this system, however, does not involve a
large mass enhancement.Comment: 12 pages in a Phys. Rev. B camera-ready format with 16 EPS figures

Safety and efficacy of eculizumab for the prevention of antibody-mediated rejection after deceased-donor kidney transplantation in patients with preformed donor-specific antibodies
Abstract View references (47)
The presence of preformed donor-specific antibodies in transplant recipients increases the risk of acute antibody-mediated rejection (AMR). Results of an open-label single-arm trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of eculizumab in preventing acute AMR in recipients of deceased-donor kidney transplants with preformed donor-specific antibodies are reported. Participants received eculizumab as follows: 1200 mg immediately before reperfusion; 900 mg on posttransplant days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28; and 1200 mg at weeks 5, 7, and 9. All patients received thymoglobulin induction therapy and standard maintenance immunosuppression including steroids. The primary end point was treatment failure rate, a composite of biopsy-proved grade II/III AMR (Banff 2007 criteria), graft loss, death, or loss to follow-up, within 9 weeks posttransplant. Eighty patients received transplants (48 women); the median age was 52 years (range 24-70 years). Observed treatment failure rate (8.8%) was significantly lower than expected for standard care (40%; P <.001). By 9 weeks, 3 of 80 patients had experienced AMR, and 4 of 80 had experienced graft loss. At 36 months, graft and patient survival rates were 83.4% and 91.5%, respectively. Eculizumab was well tolerated and no new safety concerns were identified. Eculizumab has the potential to provide prophylaxis against injury caused by acute AMR in such patients (EudraCT 2010-019631-35). \ua9 2019 The Authors. High-flux sublimation of a 3D carbon/carbon composite: surface roughness patterns
3D carbon-fibre reinforced carbon composites (3D ) are used as thermal protection systems for atmospheric re-entry, where they are exposed to strong ablation. Particularly, sublimation of the carbonaceous material plays an important role during the re entry. To study this, an arc image furnace under controlled Argon flow is used, with heat fluxes of 8 MWm−2 to 10 MWm−2. The furnace and the sample thermal response have been numerically simulated prior to the experiments and match in-situ temperature measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and 3D profilometry with digital optical microscopy were used in order to characterise the epi-macro-structural and the epi-micro-structural roughness of the composite surface, evidencing a faster recession of the fibres as compared to the matrix. Carbon nanotextures have been assessed by using High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy and Polarised Light Optical Microscopy, showing that the matrix is more organised than the fibre. This can explain the “inverse” behaviour under sublimation as compared to oxidation. The results have been qualitatively interpreted using numerical simulation of differential surface recession
Clonal selection in the human Vδ1 T cell repertoire indicates γδ TCR-dependent adaptive immune surveillance
γδ T cells are considered to be innate-like lymphocytes that respond rapidly to stress without clonal selection and differentiation. Here we use next-generation sequencing to probe how this paradigm relates to human Vδ2neg T cells, implicated in responses to viral infection and cancer. The prevalent Vδ1 T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire is private and initially unfocused in cord blood, typically becoming strongly focused on a few high-frequency clonotypes by adulthood. Clonal expansions have differentiated from a naive to effector phenotype associated with CD27 downregulation, retaining proliferative capacity and TCR sensitivity, displaying increased cytotoxic markers and altered homing capabilities, and remaining relatively stable over time. Contrastingly, Vδ2+ T cells express semi-invariant TCRs, which are present at birth and shared between individuals. Human Vδ1+ T cells have therefore evolved a distinct biology from the Vδ2+ subset, involving a central, personalized role for the γδ TCR in directing a highly adaptive yet unconventional form of immune surveillance
Alcoholism and Strongyloides stercoralis: Daily Ethanol Ingestion Has a Positive Correlation with the Frequency of Strongyloides Larvae in the Stools
It has been reported that Strongyloides stercoralis infection is more prevalent in chronic alcoholic patients than in non alcoholics living in the same country. In a retrospective study on the prevalence of S. stercoralis infection in a large sample of alcoholic patients, we demonstrate that this prevalence is significantly higher than in non-alcoholic patients admitted at the same hospital. Moreover, the frequency of the parasite was in close relationship with the daily amount of ingested ethanol, even in the absence of liver cirrhosis, reinforcing the idea that chronic alcoholism is associated with increased susceptibility to Strongyloides infection. Beside the bad hygiene profile of alcoholic patients, which explains high risk for acquisition of the parasite, the high prevalence of S. stercoralis in alcoholics may be in relationship with other effects of ethanol on the intestinal motility, steroid metabolism and immune system, which could enhance the chance of autoinfection and the survival and fecundity of females in duodenum. In this way, the number of larvae in the stools is higher in alcoholic patients, increasing the chance of a positive result in a stool examination by sedimentation method
