Suits to Robes: A study of Free Jazz Fashion

This presentation examines the presence and significance of African-derived clothing styles among Jazz musicians in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The study primarily focuses on musicians associated with progressive strains of the musical form, such as Free Jazz. The publically expressed beliefs and cultural involvement of some musicians who performed in avant-garde styles during this politically and artistically tumultuous period indicate their support and promotion of the general mindset of African-American Cultural Nationalism with their choice of clothing. Using Wenger’s theory of Communities of Practice, a study of the discography of many free jazz artists shows how these musicians, working in a non-verbal form of expression, made a political statement through their choice of clothing in a show of solidarity with the African-American Cultural Nationalist movement

Tetrahedral and Triangular Deformations of Z=NZ=N Nuclei in Mass Region A∼60−80A \sim 60-80

We study static non-axial octupole deformations in proton-rich $Z=N$ nuclei, $^{64}$Ge, $^{68}$Se, $^{72}$Kr, $^{76}$Sr, $^{80}$Zr and $^{84}$Mo, by using the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS calculation with no restrictions on the nuclear shape. The calculation predicts that the oblate ground state in $^{68}$Se is extremely soft for the $Y_{33}$ triangular deformation, and that in $^{80}$Zr the low-lying local minimum state coexisting with the prolate ground state has the $Y_{32}$ tetrahedral deformation.Comment: 8 pages, 4 Postscript figures, REVTE

Extreme alpha-clustering in the 18O nucleus

The structure of the 18O nucleus at excitation energies above the alpha decay threshold was studied using 14C+alpha resonance elastic scattering. A number of states with large alpha reduced widths have been observed, indicating that the alpha-cluster degree of freedom plays an important role in this N not equal Z nucleus. However, the alpha-cluster structure of this nucleus is very different from the relatively simple pattern of strong alpha-cluster quasi-rotational bands in the neighboring 16O and 20Ne nuclei. A 0+ state with an alpha reduced width exceeding the single particle limit was identified at an excitation energy of 9.9+/-0.3 MeV. We discuss evidence that states of this kind are common in light nuclei and give possible explanations of this feature.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table.
