    Design and Tests of the Silicon Sensors for the ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector

    To fully exploit the HERA-II upgrade,the ZEUS experiment has installed a Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) using n-type, single-sided, silicon micro-strip sensors with capacitive charge division. The sensors have a readout pitch of 120 micrometers, with five intermediate strips (20 micrometer strip pitch). The designs of the silicon sensors and of the test structures used to verify the technological parameters, are presented. Results on the electrical measurements are discussed. A total of 1123 sensors with three different geometries have been produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. Irradiation tests with reactor neutrons and Co-60 photons have been performed for a small sample of sensors. The results on neutron irradiation (with a fluence of 1 x 10^{13} 1 MeV equivalent neutrons / cm^2) are well described by empirical formulae for bulk damage. The Co-60 photons (with doses up to 2.9 kGy) show the presence of generation currents in the SiO_2-Si interface, a large shift of the flatband voltage and a decrease of the hole mobility.Comment: 33 pages, 25 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in NIM

    The ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector

    During the HERA luminosity shutdown period 2000/01 the tracking system of the ZEUS experiment has been upgraded with a silicon Micro Vertex Detector (MVD). The barrel part of the detector consists of three layers of single sided silicon strip detectors, while the forward section is composed of four wheels. In this report we shortly present the assembly procedure and in more details the test beam results on the spatial resolution of half modules.     Cardiovascular impairment in Shiga-toxin-2-induced experimental hemolytic-uremic syndrome: a pilot study.

    INTRODUCTION: Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) can occur as a systemic complication of infection with Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Most well-known aspects of the pathophysiology are secondary to microthrombotic kidney disease including hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. However, extrarenal manifestations, such as cardiac impairment, have also been reported. We have investigated whether these cardiac abnormalities can be reproduced in a murine animal model, in which administration of Stx, the main virulence factor of STEC, is used to induce HUS. METHODS: Mice received either one high or multiple low doses of Stx to simulate the (clinically well-known) different disease courses. Cardiac function was evaluated by echocardiography and analyses of biomarkers in the plasma (troponin I and brain natriuretic peptide). RESULTS: All Stx-challenged mice showed reduced cardiac output and depletion of intravascular volume indicated by a reduced end-diastolic volume and a higher hematocrit. Some mice exhibited myocardial injury (measured as increases in cTNI levels). A subset of mice challenged with either dosage regimen showed hyperkalemia with typical electrocardiographic abnormalities. DISCUSSION: Myocardial injury, intravascular volume depletion, reduced cardiac output, and arrhythmias as a consequence of hyperkalemia may be prognosis-relevant disease manifestations of HUS, the significance of which should be further investigated in future preclinical and clinical studies

    Long-term analysis of GOME in-flight calibration parameters and instrument degradation

    Since 1995, the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) has measured solar and backscattered spectra in the ultraviolet and visible wavelength range. Now, the extensive data set of the most important calibration parameters has been investigated thoroughly in order to analyze the long-term stability and performance of the instrument. This study focuses on GOME in-flight calibration and degradation for the solar path. Monitoring the sensor degradation yields an intensity decrease of 70% to 90% in 240–316nm and 35% to 65% in 311–415 nm. The spectral calibration is very stable over the whole period, although a very complex interaction between predisperser temperature and wavelength was found. The leakage current and the pixel-to-pixel gain increased significantly during the mission, which requires an accurate correction of the measured radiance and irradiance signals using proper calibration parameters. Finally, several outliers in the data sets can be directly assigned to instrument and satellite anomalies

    The Role of Physical Activity in Nonalcoholic and Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Fatty Liver Disease

    Sedentary behavior constitutes a pandemic health threat contributing to the pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Sedentarism is further associated with liver disease and particularly with nonalcoholic/metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MAFLD). Insulin resistance (IR) represents an early pathophysiologic key element of NAFLD/MAFLD, prediabetes and T2D. Current treatment guidelines recommend regular physical activity. There is evidence, that physical exercise has impact on a variety of molecular pathways, such as AMP-activated protein kinase and insulin signaling as well as glucose transporter 4 translocation, modulating insulin action, cellular substrate flow and in particular ectopic lipid and glycogen storage in a positive manner. Therefore, physical exercise can lead to substantial clinical benefit in persons with diabetes and/or NAFLD/MAFLD. However, experience from long term observational studies shows that the patients’ motivation to exercise regularly appears to be a major limitation. Strategies to integrate everyday physical activity (i.e., nonexercise activity thermogenesis) in lifestyle treatment schedules might be a promising approach. This review aggregates evidence on the impact of regular physical activity on selected molecular mechanisms as well as clinical outcomes of patients suffering from IR and NAFLD/MAFLD

    Pole-to-pole validation of GOME WFDOAS total ozone with groundbased data

    International audienceThis paper summarises the validation of GOME total ozone retrieved using the Weighting Function Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (WFDOAS) algorithm Version 1.0. This algorithm has been described in detail in a companion paper by Coldewey-Egbers et al. (2005). Compared to the operational GDP (GOME Data Processor) V3, several improvements to the total ozone retrieval have been introduced that account for the varying ozone dependent contribution to rotational Raman scattering, includes a new cloud scheme, and uses the GOME measured effective albedo in the retrieval. In this paper the WFDOAS results have been compared with selected ground-based measurements from the WOUDC (World Ozone and UV Radiation Data Centre) that collects total ozone measurements from a global network of stations covering all seasons. From the global validation excellent agreement between WFDOAS and ground data was observed. The agreement lies within ±1%, and very little seasonal variations in the differences are found. In the polar regions and at high solar zenith angles, however, a positive bias varying between 5 and 8% is found near the polar night period. As a function of solar zenith angle as well as of the retrieved total ozone, the WFDOAS differences to ground polar data, however, show a much weaker dependence as compared to the operational GOME Data Processor Version 3 of GOME that represents a significant improvement. Very few stations carry out simultaneous measurements by Brewer and Dobson spectrometers over an extended period (three years or more). Simultaneous Brewer and Dobson measurements from Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic (50.2N, 15.8E) and Hohenpeissenberg, Germany (47.8N, 11.0E) covering the period 1996-1999 have been compared with our GOME results. Agreement with Brewers are generally better than with the simultaneous Dobson measurements and this may be explained by the neglect of stratospheric (ozone) temperature correction in the standard ozone retrieval from the ground

    Beam Test of Silicon Strip Sensors for the ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector

    For the HERA upgrade, the ZEUS experiment has designed and installed a high precision Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) using single sided micro-strip sensors with capacitive charge division. The sensors have a readout pitch of 120 microns, with five intermediate strips (20 micron strip pitch). An extensive test program has been carried out at the DESY-II testbeam facility. In this paper we describe the setup developed to test the ZEUS MVD sensors and the results obtained on both irradiated and non-irradiated single sided micro-strip detectors with rectangular and trapezoidal geometries. The performances of the sensors coupled to the readout electronics (HELIX chip, version 2.2) have been studied in detail, achieving a good description by a Monte Carlo simulation. Measurements of the position resolution as a function of the angle of incidence are presented, focusing in particular on the comparison between standard and newly developed reconstruction algorithms.Comment: 41 pages, 21 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in NIM
