Stellar escapers from M67 can reach solar-like Galactic orbits
We investigate the possibility that the Sun could have been born in M67 by
carrying out -body simulations of M67-like clusters in a time-varying
Galactic environment, and following the galactic orbits of stars that escape
from them. We find that model clusters that occupy similar orbits to M67 today
can be divided up into three groups. Hot clusters are born with a high initial
-velocity, depleted clusters are born on cold orbits but are destroyed by
GMC encounters in the Galactic disc, and scattered clusters are born on cold
orbits and survive with more than 1000 stars at an age of 4.6 Gyr. We find that
all cluster models in all three cluster groups have stellar escapers that are
kinematicaly similar to the Sun. Hot clusters having the lowest such fraction
%, whilst depleted clusters have the highest fraction,
%. We calculate that clusters that are destroyed in the
Galactic disc have a specific frequency of escapers that end up on solar-like
orbits that is 2 times that of escapers from clusters that survive their
journey
Developing a framework for the analysis of power through depotentia
Stakeholder participation in tourism policy-making is usually perceived as providing a means of empowerment. However participatory processes drawing upon stakeholders from traditionally empowered backgrounds may provide the means of removing empowerment from stakeholders. Such an outcome would be in contradiction to the claims that participatory processes improve both inclusivity and sustainability. In order to form an understanding of the sources through which empowerment may be removed, an analytical perspective has been developed deriving from Lukes�s views of power dating from 1974. This perspective considers the concept of depotentia as the removal of �power to� without speculating upon the underlying intent and also provides for the multidimensionality of power to be examined within a single study. The application of this analytical perspective has been tested upon findings of the government-commissioned report of the Countryside and Community Research Unit in 2005. The survey and report investigated the progress of Local Access Forums in England created in response to the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Consideration of the data from this perspective permits the classification of individual sources of depotentia which can each be addressed and potentially enable stakeholder groups to reverse loss of empowerment where it has occurred
Comparison of High-Intensity vs. High-Volume Resistance Training on the BDNF Response to Exercise
This study compared the acute and chronic response of circulating plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to high-intensity low-volume (HI) and low-intensity high volume (HV) resistance training. Twenty experienced resistance-trained men (23.5 ± 2.6 y, 1.79 ± 0.05 m, 75.7 ± 13.8 kg) volunteered for this study. Before the resistance training program (PRE), participants performed an acute bout of exercise using either the HI [3-5 reps; 90% of one repetition maximum (1RM)] or HV (10–12 reps; 70% 1RM) training paradigm. The acute exercise protocol was repeated after 7 wk of training (POST). Blood samples were obtained at rest (BL), immediately (IP), 30 min (30P), and 60 min (60P) post exercise at PRE and POST. A three-way repeated measure ANOVA was used to analyze acute changes in BDNF concentrations during HI and HV resistance exercise and the effect of 7 wk of training. No training × time × group interaction in BDNF was noted (P = 0.994). Significant main effects for training (P = 0.050) and time (P \u3c 0.001) in BDNF were observed. Significant elevations in BDNF concentrations were seen from BL at IP (P = 0.001), 30P (P \u3c 0.001), and 60P (P \u3c 0.001) in both HI and HV combined during PRE and POST. BDNF concentrations were also observed to increase from PRE to POST when collapsed across groups and time. No significant group × training interaction (P = 0.342), training (P = 0.105), or group (P = 0.238) effect were noted in the BDNF area under the curve response. Results indicate that BDNF concentrations are increased after an acute bout of resistance exercise, regardless of training paradigm, and are further increased during a 7-wk training program in experienced lifters
Limits on the Peculiar Velocities of Two Distant Clusters Using the Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect
We report millimeter-wavelength observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (S-Z)
effect in two distant galaxy clusters. A relativistically correct analysis of
the S-Z data is combined with the results of X-ray observations to determine
the radial peculiar velocities v_r of the clusters. We observed Abell 2163
(z=.201) in three mm-wavelength bands centered at 2.1, 1.4, and 1.1 mm. We
report a significant detection of the thermal component of the S-Z effect seen
as both a decrement in the brightness of the CMB at 2.1 mm, and as an increment
at 1.1 mm. Including uncertainties due to the calibration of the instrument,
distribution and temperature of the IC gas, and astrophysical confusion, a
simultaneous fit to the data in all three bands gives v_r=+490 +1370/-880 km/s
at 68% confidence. We observed Abell 1689 (z=.181) in the 2.1 and 1.4 mm bands.
Including the same detailed accounting of uncertainty, a simultaneous fit to
the data in both bands gives v_r=+170 +815/-630 km/s. The limits on the
peculiar velocities of A2163 and A1689 correspond to deviations from the

Significant abundance of cis configurations of coding variants in diploid human genomes
To fully understand human genetic variation and its functional consequences, the specific distribution of variants between the two chromosomal homologues of genes must be known. The 'phase' of variants can significantly impact gene function and phenotype. To assess patterns of phase at large scale, we have analyzed 18 121 autosomal genes in 1092 statistically phased genomes from the 1000 Genomes Project and 184 experimentally phased genomes from the Personal Genome Project. Here we show that genes with cis-configurations of coding variants are more frequent than genes with trans-configurations in a genome, with global cis/trans ratios of ∼60:40. Significant cis-abundance was observed in virtually all genomes in all populations. Moreover, we identified a large group of genes exhibiting cis-configurations of protein-changing variants in excess, so-called 'cis-abundant genes', and a smaller group of 'trans-abundant genes'. These two gene categories were functionally distinguishable, and exhibited strikingly different distributional patterns of protein-changing variants. Underlying these phenomena was a shared set of phase-sensitive genes of importance for adaptation and evolution. This work establishes common patterns of phase as key characteristics of diploid human exomes and provides evidence for their functional significance, highlighting the importance of phase for the interpretation of protein-coding genetic variation and gene function
ASMs and Operational Algorithmic Completeness of Lambda Calculus
We show that lambda calculus is a computation model which can step by step
simulate any sequential deterministic algorithm for any computable function
over integers or words or any datatype. More formally, given an algorithm above
a family of computable functions (taken as primitive tools, i.e., kind of
oracle functions for the algorithm), for every constant K big enough, each
computation step of the algorithm can be simulated by exactly K successive
reductions in a natural extension of lambda calculus with constants for
functions in the above considered family. The proof is based on a fixed point
technique in lambda calculus and on Gurevich sequential Thesis which allows to
identify sequential deterministic algorithms with Abstract State Machines. This
extends to algorithms for partial computable functions in such a way that
finite computations ending with exceptions are associated to finite reductions
leading to terms with a particular very simple feature.Comment: 37 page
New XMM-Newton analysis of three bright X-ray sources in M31 globular clusters, including a new black hole candidate
We present detailed analysis of three globular cluster X-ray sources in the
XMM-Newton extended survey of M31. The X-ray counterpart to the M31 globular
cluster Bo 45 (XBo 45) was observed with XMM-Newton on 2006 December 26. Its
combined pn+MOS 0.3--10 keV lightcurve exhibited a r.m.s variability of ~10%,
and its 0.3--7.0 keV emission spectrum was well described by an absorbed power
law with photon index 1.440.12. Its variability and emission is
characteristic of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the low-hard state,
whether the accretor is a neutron star or black hole. Such behaviour is
typically observed at luminosities \la10% Eddington. However, XBo 45
exhibited this behaviour at an unabsorbed, 0.3--10 keV luminosity of
2.5 erg s, or{~140%} Eddington for a 1.4
neutron star accreting hydrogen. Hence, we identify XBo 45 as a new
candidate black hole LMXB. XBo 45 appears to have been consistently bright for
~30 years, consistent with theoretical prediction for a globular cluster black
hole binary formed via tidal capture. Bo 375 was observed in the 2007, January
2 XMM-Newton observation, and has a two-component spectrum that is typical for
a bright neutron star LMXB. Bo 135 was observed in the same field as Bo 45, and

Distributed top-k aggregation queries at large
Top-k query processing is a fundamental building block for efficient ranking in a large number of applications. Efficiency is a central issue, especially for distributed settings, when the data is spread across different nodes in a network. This paper introduces novel optimization methods for top-k aggregation queries in such distributed environments. The optimizations can be applied to all algorithms that fall into the frameworks of the prior TPUT and KLEE methods. The optimizations address three degrees of freedom: 1) hierarchically grouping input lists into top-k operator trees and optimizing the tree structure, 2) computing data-adaptive scan depths for different input sources, and 3) data-adaptive sampling of a small subset of input sources in scenarios with hundreds or thousands of query-relevant network nodes. All optimizations are based on a statistical cost model that utilizes local synopses, e.g., in the form of histograms, efficiently computed convolutions, and estimators based on order statistics.
