Determinants of the Intention to Protect Personal Information among Facebook Users
This study aimed to examine predictors of the intention to protect personal information on Facebook. We conducted an online survey of 679 Facebook users in the Republic of Korea. The findings of this study showed that usefulness and ease of use had significant effects on attitudes toward protection behavior. The results also revealed that risk factors (privacy risk severity and vulnerability) had significant effects on protective behaviors. Based on our findings, we discussed the information protection of privacy on Faceboo
Facebook Addiction among Koreans : A Look at Communication-related Variables
As Facebook usage is surging at global levels, concern is growing over the addictive use of Facebook. This study seeks to explore the factors contributing to Facebook addiction among Koreans, a group living in one of the most wired countries in the world. This study tests the assumption that a person becomes addicted to Facebook due to his or her desire to maintain social relationships. It thus examines such influences on the tendency of Facebook addiction as quality of social relationship, communication motive, and number of Facebook friends. The results show that those who use Facebook for communication and information are more likely to be addicted to Facebook. Another factor influencing one s inclination to Facebook addiction is quality of relationship, which impacts one s motivation to make use of Facebook. The results also show that communication motive influenced both the number of Facebook friends and information-gathering habits via Facebook. The study finds that two determining factors of Facebook addiction are usage pattern of Facebook and communication motive. What does not explain a person s tendency towards Facebook addiction is that person s desire to maintain social relationships
Clustering Local Tastes in Global Culture: The Reception Structure of Hollywood Films
This paper describes the shared structure of Hollywood film consumption based on data obtained from the Variety International Film Guide (1995, 1998, 2000). It focuses on the consumption of the top 10 films in over 30 countries, using a longitudinal study to explain the structure of cultural consumption, how it has transformed over time, and how it is related to cultural factors. The results indicate that the structure of film consumption is comprised of three cultural clusters: local film-based, strong and weak homogenization clusters. The results suggest that countries consume the Hollywood films in different ways and have different selection for foreign films. Also, the results suggest that the film consumption pattern was significantly related to cultural zone network.Global Culture, Hollywood Films, Cultural Zones
The Structure of the Internet Flows in Cyberspace
This paper describes the structure of international Internet traffic based on data obtained from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development for July, 1998. It also describes the relationship between the structure of the Internet and international telecommunications, as well as telephone rates, language, physical location, trade blocs, international migration, student flows, and science and structural asynchrony. The results indicate that the structure of the Internet is significantly related to the structure of the international telecommunications, trade, science and student flow networks, as well language and asynchrony. In combination, only telecommunications, trade, science and asynchrony were significant, accounting for 49. 7% of the variance in the structure of the Internet.Barnett George A., Chon Bum-Soo, Rosen Devan. Effect of Au Nanorods on Potential Barrier Modulation in Morphologically Controlled Au@Cu2O Core–Shell Nanoreactors for Gas Sensor Applications
In this work, Au@Cu2O
core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by simple solution
route and applied for CO sensing applications. Au@Cu2O
core–shell NPs were formed by the deposition of 30–60
nm Cu2O shell layer on Au nanorods (NRs) having 10–15
nm width and 40–60 nm length. The morphology of Au@Cu2O core–shell NPs was tuned from brick to spherical shape by
tuning the pH of the solution. In the absence of Au NRs, cubelike
Cu2O NPs having ∼200 nm diameters were formed. The
sensor having Au@Cu2O core–shell layer exhibited
higher CO sensitivity compared to bare Cu2O NPs layer.
Tuning of morphology of Au@Cu2O core–shell NPs from
brick to spherical shape significantly lowered the air resistance.
Transition from p- to n-type response was observed for all devices
below 150 °C. It was demonstrated that performance of sensor
depends not only on the electronic sensitization of Au NRs but also
on the morphology of the Au@Cu2O core–shell NPs
Prevalence and clinical characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD) without depressed mood in Koreans with MDD: results from the CRESCEND study
Objective: We examined the prevalence and clinical characteristics of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) without depressed mood, using data from the Clinical Research Center for Depression (CRESCEND) study in South Korea. Methods: Using analysis of covariance for continuous variables and binary logistic regression analysis for discrete variables, the clinical characteristics of MDD patients with and without depressed mood were compared after controlling for the potential effects of gender. To represent the extent of group differences, we computed Cohen’s d statistics. Results: Of 1009 MDD patients, only 2.2% were without depressed mood. Compared with those with depressed mood, these patients were characterized by a significantly lower rate of current suicidal ideation (adjust odds ratio = 5.258, p = .003; d = 0.193), fewer depressive symptom profiles (F = 8.731, p = .003; d = −0.543) and lower severity scores for overall depression (F = 16.027, p < .0001; d = −0.853), core depressive symptoms (F = 14.233, p < .0001; d = −0.810), insomnia (F = 6.967, p = .008; d = −0.579), anxiety (F = 14.235, p < .0001; d = −0.810), and suicidal ideation (F = 9.034, p = .003; d = 0.531), as well as a higher level of social functioning (F = 6.862, p = .009; d = 0.531). Conclusions: MDD without depressed mood is associated with a lower illness burden than MDD with depressed mood, and may have the distinctive clinical characteristics of MDD
