The role of interchange fees in two-sided markets: An empirical investigation on payment cards

    Get PDF
We study the impact of reductions in interchange fees on payment card services. We find that consumer and merchant acceptance and transaction volumes increased when interchange fees were reduced. Our results suggest that a 10 percent reduction in the rate of decline per quarter in the average interchange fee by an acquirer resulted in a rate of increase in merchant acceptance per quarter of up to 1.4 percent. Additionally, a 10 percent increase in the rate of interaction of merchant acceptance and the total number of cards increased the rate of quarterly issuer transaction volumes up to 1.7 percent

EARTHQUAKE FORECASTING IN BANGLADESH AND ITS SURROUNDING REGIONS

Earthquake is one of the most dreadful natural disasters which have caused incalculable destruction of properties and human lives. An examination of the historical catalog of Bangladesh and its surrounding regions reveal that several earthquakes of large magnitude with epicenters within this region have occurred in the past. In this paper, we have analyzed the previous earthquake data up to 2008 of Bangladesh and its adjacent regions with spatial distribution and have tried to find out the probable earthquake risk with magnitude ( ms ≥ 6.0) in this region. Our goal is to forecast waiting times until the next earthquake in Bangladesh and its surrounding regions for a magnitude of earthquake ( ms ≥ 6.0). For the prediction of the next strong earthquake, we have used Weibull distribution which is the best way to carry out probabilistic hazard analysis of earthquake occurrences and compared this distribution with the log-normal distribution and exponential distribution for the occurrence of earthquake in Bangladesh and its surrounding regions

Time-frequency analysis of multiple fringe and nonsinusoidal signals obtained from a fiber-optic vibration sensor using an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer

In the case of multiple fringes and complex frequency measurements, the frequency of the output signal changes rapidly when the vibration changes and frequency breakdown takes place at the turning point. For a particular vibration signature containing many frequency components at different time intervals, it is often difficult to trace the direction of the vibration as well as individual frequency peaks. In such cases, advanced signal-processing scheme is necessary to decode the vibration signature. This paper investigates the data interrogation technique for multifrequency and complex signals of surface Vibration obtained from an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor. In this paper, wavelet transform (WT)-based signal processing methodology has been employed to count of optical fringes with special reference to signals having subfringes. A WT-based tool has also been developed for unambiguous identification of frequency components from a nonsinusoidal vibration. The results of such WT-based analyses are presented, and merits as well as demerits of the proposed methods are discussed

The Secret to Successful User Communities: An Analysis of Computer Associates’ User Groups

    Get PDF
This paper provides the first large scale study that examines the impact of both individual- and group-specific factors on the benefits users obtain from their user communities. By empirically analysing 924 survey responses from individuals in 161 Computer Associates' user groups, this paper aims to identify the determinants of successful user communities. To measure success, the amount of time individual members save through having access to their user networks is used. As firms can significantly profit from successful user communities, this study proposes four key implications of the empirical results for the management of user communities
