    Wakarusa Wetlands Survey: University of Kansas Undergraduates

    The Wakarusa Wetlands remain under threat of urban development by government and corporate interests. Projects such as the South Lawrence Trafficway, its recently proposed expansion, & the New Boston Crossing threaten to harm the wetlands and obscure their crucial historical significance to Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) and Indigenous peoples more broadly. Despite the troubled history of the wetlands and persisting contention regarding new development projects, less is known about local perceptions of these issues. This work takes a first step toward understanding what Lawrence, KS community members think about the idea of continued development into the Wakarusa Wetlands

    Giant juvenile fibroadenoma of the breast: a clinical case.

    Juvenile giant fibroadenoma is a benign breast tumor and rare variant of the fibroadenomas. Clinical presentation is usually a painless, solitary and unilateral breast mass. It accounts for 0.5%-2% of all fibroadenomas and exact etiology is not known; however, hormonal influences are thought to be contributing factors. We present a case of a 20 cm diameter giant juvenile fibroadenoma of the breast in a 14-year-old girl. The patient was suffering from a painless, progressively enlarging mass for 1 year. Ultrasound revealed fibroadenoma and total surgical excision was performed. The patient is doing well in ten months of follow up

    Thyroid Gland Metastasis from Cancer of the Uterine Cervix: An Extremely Rare Case Report

    The thyroid gland is a relatively uncommon site for a metastatic disease, although it is richly supplied with blood. The metastases may originate from various primary sites, mainly kidney, lung, head and neck, and breast. Thyroid metastasis from cervical carcinomas is extremely rare; and only a few cases have been previously reported in the literature. In patient with thyroid nodules and an oncological history, the possibility of thyroid metastasis should be seriously considered. Despite the rarity of the metastasis of cervical carcinoma to the thyroid, it is difficult to say appropriate treatment approach for these lesions. When managing such patients, decision-making should balance the possibility of gaining long-term survival against estimation of the aggressiveness of the disease and its possible complications. Here, a case of thyroid metastasis from a squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix presenting with cervical mass and difficulty in swallowing and its treatment is reported

    Characteristics of TI6AL4V powders recycled from turnings via the HDH technique

    The objective of this research is for Ti6Al4V alloy turnings, generated during the machining of implants, to produce powders for the fabrication of Ti base coating via the cold spray method. In order to decrease the cost of powder production and increase the recycling rate of the turnings, the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) process has been utilised. The HDH process consists of the following sequence: surface conditioning of the turnings, hydrogenation, ball milling (for powder production), and dehydrogenation. Afterwards, the properties of the recycled powder were analysed via phase, chemical, and morphological examinations, and size and flowability measurements. Usability of the powder in additive manufacturing applications has been evaluated via examining the characteristics of the deposit produced from this powder by the cold spray method. In short, promising results were obtained regarding the potential of the recycled powders in additive manufacturing after making minor adjustments in the HDH process

    Preparation of electrospun polycaprolactone nanofiber mats loaded with microalgal extracts

    WOS: 000483205600001Sustainable, ecological, and biocompatible materials are emerging for the development of novel components for tissue engineering. Microalgae being one of the unique organisms on Earth to provide various novel compounds with certain bioactivities are also a good source for the development of novel tissue scaffold materials. In this study, electrospinning technique was utilized to fabricate nanofibers from polycaprolactone loaded with microalgal extracts obtained from Haematococcus pluvialis (vegetative and carotenoid producing form) and Chlorella vulgaris. The FTIR results showed that, blending microalgae with polycaprolactone give unique bands rooted from microalgae and polycaprolactone structure. The samples were not diversified from each other, however stable bands were observed. SEM analysis revealed a uniform fiber fabrication with an average diameter of 810 +/- 55 nm independent from microalgal extracts. MTT assay was done on HUVEC cell lines and results showed that nanofiber mats helped cell proliferation with extended time. Biodegradation resulted with mineral accumulation on the surface of same samples however the fiber degradation was uniform. With slow but stable biodegradation characteristics, microalgal extract loaded nanofiber mats holds great potential to be novel tissue scaffold material

    Excessive daytime sleepiness is a common clinical application of Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome and narcolepsy patients. Although both medical conditions can be different in extensive daytime sleepiness features and accompanying symptomatology, distinctive features may be masked in some cases. In our four reported cases, there were obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and narcolepsy type 1 coexistence. We aimed to discuss the possibility of this condition being comorbidity, the possibility of masking the type clinics in their association or the possibility of causing each other's risk factors
