The discovery, monitoring and environment of SGR J1935+2154
We report on the discovery of a new member of the magnetar class, SGR
J1935+2154, and on its timing and spectral properties measured by an extensive
observational campaign carried out between July 2014 and March 2015 with
Chandra and XMM-Newton (11 pointings). We discovered the spin period of SGR
J1935+2154 through the detection of coherent pulsations at a period of about
3.24s. The magnetar is slowing-down at a rate of 1.43(1)x10^{-11} s/s and with
a decreasing trend due to a negative second period derivative of
-3.5(7)x10^{-19} s/s^2. This implies a surface dipolar magnetic field strength
of about 2.2x10^{14} G, a characteristic age of about 3.6kyr and, a spin-down
luminosity L_{sd} of about 1.7x10^{34} erg/s. The source spectrum is well
modelled by a blackbody with temperature of about 500eV plus a power-law
component with photon index of about 2. The source showed a moderate long-term
variability, with a flux decay of about 25\% during the first four months since
its discovery, and a re-brightening of the same amount during the second four
months. The X-ray data were also used to study the source environment. In
particular, we discovered a diffuse emission extending on spatial scales from
about 1" up to at least 1' around SGR J1935+2154 both in Chandra and XMM-Newton
data. This component is constant in flux (at least within uncertainties) and
its spectrum is well modelled by a power-law spectrum steeper than that of the
pulsar. Though a scattering halo origin seems to be more probable we cannot
exclude that part, or all, of the diffuse emission is due to a pulsar wind

Recurring adaptive introgression of a supergene variant that determines social organization
Introgression has been proposed as an essential source of adaptive genetic variation. However, a key barrier to adaptive introgression is that recombination can break down combinations of alleles that underpin many traits. This barrier might be overcome in supergene regions, where suppressed recombination leads to joint inheritance across many loci. Here, we study the evolution of a large supergene region that determines a major social and ecological trait in Solenopsis fire ants: whether colonies have one queen or multiple queens. Using coalescent-based phylogenies built from the genomes of 365 haploid fire ant males, we show that the supergene variant responsible for multiple-queen colonies evolved in one species and repeatedly spread to other species through introgressive hybridization. This finding highlights how supergene architecture can enable a complex adaptive phenotype to recurrently permeate species boundaries
Evaluación de Quassia amara como tratamiento contra la varroosis en tres apiarios del municipio de León, Nicaragua
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5377/universitas.v5i1.1482 UNIVERSITAS (León): Revista Científica de la UNAN León Vol.5(1) 2014, pp 100-106Se realizó un estudio experimental en tres apiarios con las mismas condiciones físicas y ambientales con el fin de evaluar la eficacia del extracto acuoso Quassia amara como tratamiento contra Varroa destructor utilizando para esto cinco grupos de tratamiento: Colmena ST: Sin tratamiento, es el control y cuatro colmenas a las que se les aplicó el extracto de Quassia amara en diferentes concentraciones: Colmena A: solución madre (M) 100% (1 kg materia bruta/10 l de agua); Colmena B: dilución I = Una parte de solución M más 4 partes de agua (20%); Colmena C: dilución II = Una parte de la dilución I más una parte de agua (10%); Colmena D: dilución III = Una parte de dilución II más una parte de agua (5%). Se realizaron seis aplicaciones mediante aspersión con intervalo de cuatro días. Los índices de infestación fueron valorados mediante conteos de la carga parasitaria en abejas adultas de cada colmena y las muestras se recolectaron en los siguientes momentos: Al realizar la primera, tercera y última aplicaciones, y 21 días después de la última. La extensión de invasión en crías se determinó en la primera y última aplicaciones y 21 días después. En total se trabajaron 60 muestras de abejas adultas de 150 a 200 especímenes y 45 fragmentos de panales de cría operculada de 10x10 cm. Se encontró que la dilución I fue la más efectiva sobre el ácaro en abejas adultas, con el mejor resultado a la cuarta semana del inicio de la aplicación (eficacia = 62%) mientras que en crías la más efectiva fue la dilución IV (eficacia = 23,10%). La planta Quassia amara brinda una alternativa prometedora de posible futura integración a las medidas con que los productores enfrentan el problema de la varroosis. La información recopilada contribuirá a la elaboración de un programa de control de esta enfermedad. Vibration reduction for vision systems on board unmanned aerial vehicles using a neuro-fuzzy controller
In this paper, an intelligent control approach based on neuro-fuzzy systems performance is presented, with the objective of counteracting the vibrations that affect the low-cost vision platform onboard an unmanned aerial system of rotating nature. A scaled dynamical model of a helicopter is used to simulate vibrations on its fuselage. The impact of these vibrations on the low-cost vision system will be assessed and an intelligent control approach will be derived in order to reduce its detrimental influence. Different trials that consider a neuro-fuzzy approach as a fundamental part of an intelligent semi-active control strategy have been carried out. Satisfactory results have been achieved compared to those obtained by means of vibration reduction passive techniques
Transmutations and spectral parameter power series in eigenvalue problems
We give an overview of recent developments in Sturm-Liouville theory
concerning operators of transmutation (transformation) and spectral parameter
power series (SPPS). The possibility to write down the dispersion
(characteristic) equations corresponding to a variety of spectral problems
related to Sturm-Liouville equations in an analytic form is an attractive
feature of the SPPS method. It is based on a computation of certain systems of
recursive integrals. Considered as families of functions these systems are
complete in the -space and result to be the images of the nonnegative
integer powers of the independent variable under the action of a corresponding
transmutation operator. This recently revealed property of the Delsarte
transmutations opens the way to apply the transmutation operator even when its
integral kernel is unknown and gives the possibility to obtain further
interesting properties concerning the Darboux transformed Schr\"{o}dinger
operators.
We introduce the systems of recursive integrals and the SPPS approach,
explain some of its applications to spectral problems with numerical
illustrations, give the definition and basic properties of transmutation
operators, introduce a parametrized family of transmutation operators, study
their mapping properties and construct the transmutation operators for Darboux

Evaluation of fluoride release from experimental TiF4 and NaF varnishes in vitro
Fluoride varnishes play an important role in the prevention of dental caries, promoting the inhibition of demineralization and the increase of remineralization. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the amount of fluoride released into water and artificial saliva from experimental TiF(4 )and NaF varnishes, with different concentrations, for 12 h. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fluoride varnishes were applied on acrylic blocks and then immersed in 10 ml of deionized water and artificial saliva in polystyrene bottles. The acrylic blocks were divided in seven groups (n=10): 1.55% TiF(4 )varnish (0.95% F, pH 1.0); 3.10% TiF(4 )varnish (1.90% F, pH 1.0); 3.10% and 4% TiF(4 )varnish (2.45% F, pH 1.0); 2.10% NaF varnish (0.95% F, pH 5.0); 4.20% NaF varnish (1.90% F, pH 5.0); 5.42% NaF varnish (2.45% F, pH 5.0) and control (no treatment, n=5). The fluoride release was analyzed after 1/2, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 h of exposure. The analysis was performed using an ion-specific electrode coupled to a potentiometer. Two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's test were applied for the statistical analysis (p<0.05). RESULTS: TiF(4 )varnishes released larger amounts of fluoride than NaF varnishes during the first 1/2 h, regardless of their concentration; 4% TiF(4) varnish released more fluoride than NaF varnishes for the first 6 h. The peak of fluoride release occurred at 3 h. There was a better dose-response relationship among the varnishes exposed to water than to artificial saliva. CONCLUSIONS: The 3.10% and 4% TiF(4 )-based varnishes have greater ability to release fluoride into water and artificial saliva compared to NaF varnish; however, more studies must be conducted to elucidate the mechanism of action of TiF(4 )varnish on tooth surface
A Very Young Radio-loud Magnetar
The magnetar Swift J1818.0–1607 was discovered in 2020 March when Swift detected a 9 ms hard X-ray burst and a long-lived outburst. Prompt X-ray observations revealed a spin period of 1.36 s, soon confirmed by the discovery of radio pulsations. We report here on the analysis of the Swift burst and follow-up X-ray and radio observations. The burst average luminosity was L burst ~ 2 × 1039 erg s−1 (at 4.8 kpc). Simultaneous observations with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR three days after the burst provided a source spectrum well fit by an absorbed blackbody ( = (1.13 ± 0.03) × 1023 cm−2 and kT = 1.16 ± 0.03 keV) plus a power law (Γ = 0.0 ± 1.3) in the 1–20 keV band, with a luminosity of ~8 × 1034 erg s−1, dominated by the blackbody emission. From our timing analysis, we derive a dipolar magnetic field B ~ 7 × 1014 G, spin-down luminosity erg s−1, and characteristic age of 240 yr, the shortest currently known. Archival observations led to an upper limit on the quiescent luminosity <5.5 × 1033 erg s−1, lower than the value expected from magnetar cooling models at the source characteristic age. A 1 hr radio observation with the Sardinia Radio Telescope taken about 1 week after the X-ray burst detected a number of strong and short radio pulses at 1.5 GHz, in addition to regular pulsed emission; they were emitted at an average rate 0.9 min−1 and accounted for ~50% of the total pulsed radio fluence. We conclude that Swift J1818.0–1607 is a peculiar magnetar belonging to the small, diverse group of young neutron stars with properties straddling those of rotationally and magnetically powered pulsars. Future observations will make a better estimation of the age possible by measuring the spin-down rate in quiescence
Strongly magnetized pulsars: explosive events and evolution
Well before the radio discovery of pulsars offered the first observational
confirmation for their existence (Hewish et al., 1968), it had been suggested
that neutron stars might be endowed with very strong magnetic fields of
-G (Hoyle et al., 1964; Pacini, 1967). It is because of their
magnetic fields that these otherwise small ed inert, cooling dead stars emit
radio pulses and shine in various part of the electromagnetic spectrum. But the
presence of a strong magnetic field has more subtle and sometimes dramatic
consequences: In the last decades of observations indeed, evidence mounted that
it is likely the magnetic field that makes of an isolated neutron star what it
is among the different observational manifestations in which they come. The
contribution of the magnetic field to the energy budget of the neutron star can
be comparable or even exceed the available kinetic energy. The most magnetised
neutron stars in particular, the magnetars, exhibit an amazing assortment of
explosive events, underlining the importance of their magnetic field in their
lives. In this chapter we review the recent observational and theoretical
achievements, which not only confirmed the importance of the magnetic field in
the evolution of neutron stars, but also provide a promising unification scheme
for the different observational manifestations in which they appear. We focus
on the role of their magnetic field as an energy source behind their persistent

Quasi-radial growth of metal tube on si nanowires template
It is reported in this article that Si nanowires can be employed as a positive template for the controllable electrochemical deposition of noble metal tube. The deposited tube exhibits good crystallinity. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope characterizations are conducted to reveal the growth process of metal tube, showing that the metal tube grows quasi-radially on the wall of Si nanowire. The quasi-radial growth of metal enables the fabrication of thickness-defined metal tube via changing deposition time. Inner-diameter-defined metal tube is achieved by choosing Si nanowires with desired diameter as a template. Metal tubes with inner diameters ranging from 1 μm to sub-50 nm are fabricated
