Free recall test experience potentiates strategy-driven effects of value on memory.

People tend to show better memory for information that is deemed valuable or important. By one mechanism, individuals selectively engage deeper, semantic encoding strategies for high value items (Cohen, Rissman, Suthana, Castel, & Knowlton, 2014). By another mechanism, information paired with value or reward is automatically strengthened in memory via dopaminergic projections from midbrain to hippocampus (Shohamy & Adcock, 2010). We hypothesized that the latter mechanism would primarily enhance recollection-based memory, while the former mechanism would strengthen both recollection and familiarity. We also hypothesized that providing interspersed tests during study is a key to encouraging selective engagement of strategies. To test these hypotheses, we presented participants with sets of words, and each word was associated with a high or low point value. In some experiments, free recall tests were given after each list. In all experiments, a recognition test was administered 5 minutes after the final word list. Process dissociation was accomplished via remember/know judgments at recognition, a recall test probing both item memory and memory for a contextual detail (word plurality), and a task dissociation combining a recognition test for plurality (intended to probe recollection) with a speeded item recognition test (to probe familiarity). When recall tests were administered after study lists, high value strengthened both recollection and familiarity. When memory was not tested after each study list, but rather only at the end, value increased recollection but not familiarity. These dual process dissociations suggest that interspersed recall tests guide learners' use of metacognitive control to selectively apply effective encoding strategies. (PsycINFO Database Recor

Vine and soil-based measures of water status in a Tempranillo vineyard

Seasonal changes of leaf and stem water potential and midday stomatal conductance (gs) of Tempranillo grapevines were determined in irrigated and non-irrigated vines in 2003 and 2004. Leaf water potential was measured at pre-dawn (Ψpd) and at midday (Ψlmd), while stem water potential was measured in the early morning (Ψsem) and at midday (Ψsmd). At Ψpd to -0.54 MPa rain-fed and irrigated vines had similar midday Ψl and Ψs. This was due to both, stomatal closure and reduction of leaf area. Under these conditions, Ψpd and Ψsem were better water stress indicators than midday Ψ. In both years a close correlation was found between Ψpd and Ψsem. However, for a given Ψpd, Ψsem of vines was lower in 2004 than in 2003. This was probably due to the larger leaf area developed by vines in 2004. Stomatal conductance reflected reasonably well differences in the vine water status but its variability was much higher than that of Ψ. Moreover, the afternoon depression of stomatal conductance observed even in irrigated plots, indicates that measuring gs early in the morning is more convenient when assessing different treatments.

A Pilot Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Treatments in Newly Diagnosed High-Grade Gliomas: The Example of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid Compared With White-Light Surgery

BACKGROUND: High-grade gliomas are aggressive, incurable tumors characterized by extensive diffuse invasion of the normal brain parenchyma. Novel therapies at best prolong survival; their costs are formidable and benefit is marginal. Economic restrictions thus require knowledge of the cost-effectiveness of treatments. Here, we show the cost-effectiveness of enhanced resections in malignant glioma surgery using a well-characterized tool for intraoperative tumor visualization, 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of 5-ALA fluorescence-guided neurosurgery compared with white-light surgery in adult patients with newly diagnosed high-grade glioma, adopting the perspective of the Portuguese National Health Service. METHODS: We used a Markov model (cohort simulation). Transition probabilities were estimated with the use of data from 1 randomized clinical trial and 1 noninterventional prospective study. Utility values and resource use were obtained from published literature and expert opinion. Unit costs were taken from official Portuguese reimbursement lists (2012 values). The health outcomes considered were quality-adjusted life-years, lifeyears, and progression-free life-years. Extensive 1-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed. RESULTS: The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios are below €10 000 in all evaluated outcomes, being around €9100 per quality-adjusted life-year gained, €6700 per life-year gained, and €8800 per progression-free life-year gained. The probability of 5-ALA fluorescence-guided surgery cost-effectiveness at a threshold of €20000 is 96.0% for quality-adjusted life-year, 99.6% for life-year, and 98.8% for progression-free life-year. CONCLUSION: 5-ALA fluorescence-guided surgery appears to be cost-effective in newly diagnosed high-grade gliomas compared with white-light surgery. This example demonstrates cost-effectiveness analyses for malignant glioma surgery to be feasible on the basis of existing data

Dominant g(9/2)^2 neutron configuration in the 4+1 state of 68Zn based on new g factor measurements

The gg factor of the 41+4_1^+ state in 68^{68}Zn has been remeasured with improved energy resolution of the detectors used. The value obtained is consistent with the previous result of a negative gg factor thus confirming the dominant 0g9/20g_{9/2} neutron nature of the 41+4_1^+ state. In addition, the accuracy of the gg factors of the 21+2_1^+, 22+2_2^+ and 313_1^- states has been improved an d their lifetimes were well reproduced. New large-scale shell model calculations based on a 56^{56}Ni core and an 0f5/21pg9/20f_{5/2}1pg_{9/2} model space yield a theoretical value, g(41+)=+0.008g(4_1^+) = +0.008. Although the calculated value is small, it cannot fully explain the experimental value, g(41+)=0.37(17)g(4_1^+) = -0.37(17). The magnitude of the deduced B(E2) of the 41+4_1^+ and 21+2_1^+ transition is, however, rather well described. These results demonstrate again the importance of gg factor measurements for nuclear structure determination s due to their specific sensitivity to detailed proton and neutron components in the nuclear wave functions.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figs, submitted to PL

TREX-DM: a low background Micromegas-based TPC for low-mass WIMP detection

    Get PDF
Dark Matter experiments are recently focusing their detection techniques in low-mass WIMPs, which requires the use of light elements and low energy threshold. In this context, we describe the TREX-DM experiment, a low background Micromegas-based TPC for low-mass WIMP detection. Its main goal is the operation of an active detection mass \sim0.3 kg, with an energy threshold below 0.4 keVee and fully built with previously selected radiopure materials. This work describes the commissioning of the actual setup situated in a laboratory on surface and the updates needed for a possible physics run at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in 2016. A preliminary background model of TREX-DM is also presented, based on a Geant4 simulation, the simulation of the detector's response and two discrimination methods: a conservative muon/electron and one based on a neutron source. Based on this background model, TREX-DM could be competitive in the search for low-mass WIMPs. In particular it could be sensitive, e.g., to the low-mass WIMP interpretation of the DAMA/LIBRA and other hints in a conservative scenario.Comment: Proceedings of the XIV International Conference on Topics in Astroparticle and Underground Physics (TAUP 2015), 7-11 September 2015, Torino, Ital

High Precision CTE-Measurement of SiC-100 for Cryogenic Space-Telescopes

We present the results of high precision measurements of the thermal expansion of the sintered SiC, SiC-100, intended for use in cryogenic space-telescopes, in which minimization of thermal deformation of the mirror is critical and precise information of the thermal expansion is needed for the telescope design. The temperature range of the measurements extends from room temperature down to \sim 10 K. Three samples, #1, #2, and #3 were manufactured from blocks of SiC produced in different lots. The thermal expansion of the samples was measured with a cryogenic dilatometer, consisting of a laser interferometer, a cryostat, and a mechanical cooler. The typical thermal expansion curve is presented using the 8th order polynomial of the temperature. For the three samples, the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE), \bar{\alpha}_{#1}, \bar{\alpha}_{#2}, and \bar{\alpha}_{#3} were derived for temperatures between 293 K and 10 K. The average and the dispersion (1 σ\sigma rms) of these three CTEs are 0.816 and 0.002 (×106\times 10^{-6}/K), respectively. No significant difference was detected in the CTE of the three samples from the different lots. Neither inhomogeneity nor anisotropy of the CTE was observed. Based on the obtained CTE dispersion, we performed an finite-element-method (FEM) analysis of the thermal deformation of a 3.5 m diameter cryogenic mirror made of six SiC-100 segments. It was shown that the present CTE measurement has a sufficient accuracy well enough for the design of the 3.5 m cryogenic infrared telescope mission, the Space Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA).Comment: in press, PASP. 21 pages, 4 figure
