Optimizing Care Teams from the Start

    Get PDF
Traditionally, the onboarding plan for a new provider is focused on the new employee. But what happens when the success of your role is largely impacted by the relationships you have with others on the interdisciplinary care team? Interprofessional relationships are a key element of Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) success in their role and the earlier they can start being developed the better. This presentation will identify strategies to help management teams create effective onboarding plans for the BHC that facilitate smooth adoption of integrated principles and launch successful interdisciplinary collaboration across the care team

From overload to Overlord: reducing cognitive load in a post app-pocalyptic world

Mobile phones are ever-present and undoubtedly beneficial and useful devices, however the amount of information available can be at times overwhelming. Despite all of the benefits and conveniences they offer, the mobile computing environment has not entirely delivered on the promise of easy and simplified access to information. Approaching this problem space using a design science approach, this study addresses information overload of the mobile user as a result of duplicate application functionality and unnecessary screen transitions. Building on the myriad approaches to this problem, this research proposes a novel block-by-default GUI interface that performs automated data classification and aggregation in the background. Subscription functionality will hopefully evolve mobile computing into an attention-based revenue model where apps are rewarded for providing user utility as opposed to maximizing user time on app

The Relationship between Narcotic Administration and Emergency Department Recidivism

The present study investigated the impact of narcotic administration on quantity and frequency of recidivism by patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) with a primary complaint of chronic pain. This study explored the relationship between narcotic administration, gender, prescribing physician and subsequent ED visits. We analyzed the data from the twelve months of medical records for 80 patients (278 visits) who presented at the ED of a general medical center in a rural area. Results indicated that the number of visits by those who received narcotics was significantly higher than for those who did not receive narcotics. There was also a significant difference in prescribing patterns, with females being more likely than males to receive a narcotic. Observable differences were found between the frequency of days between visits for those who received narcotics vs. those who did not, and the differential pattern of narcotic administration between providers. These findings raise the question that the receipt of a narcotic may reinforce visits to the ED. This study concluded that an established protocol for treating patients with chronic pain who present in the ED may be useful

JKST6, a novel multikinase modulator of the BCR-ABL1/STAT5 signaling pathway that potentiates direct BCR-ABL1 inhibition and overcomes imatinib resistance in chronic myelogenous leukemia

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a hematological malignancy that highly depends on the BCR-ABL1/STAT5 signaling pathway for cell survival. First-line treatments for CML consist of tyrosine kinase inhibitors that efficiently target BCR-ABL1 activity. However, drug resistance and intolerance are still therapeutic limitations in Ph+ cells. Therefore, the development of new anti-CML drugs that exhibit alternative mechanisms to overcome these limitations is a desirable goal. In this work, the antitumoral activity of JKST6, a naphthoquinone-pyrone hybrid, was assessed in imatinib-sensitive and imatinib-resistant human CML cells. Live-cell imaging analysis revealed JKST6 potent antiproliferative activity in 2D and 3D CML cultures. JKST6 provoked cell increase in the subG1 phase along with a reduction in the G0/G1 phase and altered the expression of key proteins involved in the control of mitosis and DNA damage. Rapid increases in Annexin V staining and activation/cleavage of caspases 8, 9 and 3 were observed after JKST6 treatment in CML cells. Of interest, JKST6 inhibited BCR-ABL1/STAT5 signaling through oncokinase downregulation that was preceded by rapid polyubiquitination. In addition, JKST6 caused a transient increase in JNK and AKT phosphorylation, whereas the phosphorylation of P38-MAPK and Src was reduced. Combinatory treatment unveiled synergistic effects between imatinib and JKST6. Notably, JKST6 maintained its antitumor efficacy in BCR-ABL1-T315I-positive cells and CML cells that overexpress BCR-ABL and even restored imatinib efficacy after a short exposure time. These findings, together with the observed low toxicity of JKST6, reveal a novel multikinase modulator that might overcome the limitations of BCR-ABL1 inhibitors in CML therapy. This research has been funded by Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness - MINECO - (SAF 2015–65113-C2–1-R and RTI2018–094356-B-C21 to AEB, SAF2015–65113-C2–2 to LFP, SAF2017–88026-R to JL) with the co-funding of European Regional Development Fund (EU-ERDF), Canary Islands Government (CEI2018–23/ACIISI to BG, CEI2019–08/ACIISI to BG and LFP, ProID2021010037 to AEB, LFP and BG) and "Juan de la Cierva Incorporacion" Grant Program from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (IJC2018-035193-I to CR).

Outside the Bean Belt: A Study on the Suitability and Sustainability of Coffee Plants in Southern California due to Climate Change using GIS

California has a unique climate that is suitable for growing a variety of agricultural crops. As stated by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, California’s agricultural abundance includes more than 400 commodities, and of these, over a third of the vegetables and three-quarters of the fruits and nuts consumed in the United States, are grown in California. Mark Gaskell, Ph.D., a California Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor, recently began an experiment to grow coffee plants; he believed that due to changing climatic conditions, California farmers could begin to grow coffee plants in their fields. Several farmers agreed to experiment as well and found that the plants did indeed grow. The issue, however, is that farmers would like to know if they can reliably plant coffee on their farms and sustain coffee production for years to come. As a result, this study will utilize the maximum entropy approach, a well-established algorithm for modeling habitat suitability over geographical domains, to measure the impact of future climate change on the sustainability of growing coffee plants in California in the years ahead. Layers of worldwide climate data, that represent 19 bioclimatic variables, will be utilized in this study. WorldClim is an online repository that contains historic, monthly, meteorological data averaged across 30 years (1970–2000) as well as climate data representing possible future conditions based on various climate prediction models. While this study is focusing on the impact of climate change on coffee plants, it is expected the methodological processes developed, and the resultant findings will be applicable to a wide variety of agricultural crops
