Evaluation of indoor environment and energy performance of dwellings in heritage buildings. The case of hot summers in historic cities in Mediterranean Europe

    Get PDF
he potential benefits for making the historic buildings of heritage cities non-polluting and energy efficient have only recently stirred the interest of researchers and policy makers in facing the necessary challenges. In southern Europe, most of these buildings are residential and are mainly listed at low grades of protection, allowing for significant transformation. This article quantitatively evaluates the indoor environment and energy performance of the residential heritage building stock under the severe summer conditions characteristic of the Mediterranean climate zone. The historic centre of Seville (Andalusia, Spain) is used as a case study. Three dwellings located in representative listed buildings within its conservation area were monitored and analysed taking occupant behaviour into account. The findings show that many dwellings may lack thermal comfort conditions, which cannot always be guaranteed by passive strategies alone. In addition, these buildings are more polluting than recently constructed ones because they depend entirely for their energy supply on the public electricity grid. Interestingly, in most cases reducing the mechanical cooling demand would not require intrusive physical interventions, but would largely rely on suitable window shading and nightly natural ventilation when outdoor conditions allow

However, experimental research on the processes involved in the creation of AD is still scarce. More specifically, the study of describers’ psychological traits has so far been a rather unexplored area in the field. The present study focuses on creativity as one of the main professional competencies required for AD. In order to study the relationship between creativity, accuracy and experience, we recruited 10 professional describers and measured their creativity through a validated creativity test. They were then asked to create AD scripts for four highly poetic scenes. Their performance was analysed in terms of the accuracy and subjectivity of the texts. Our results show that more experienced describers are more creative, less subjective and more accurate when creating their descriptions

The impact of translators’ ideology on the translation process: a reaction time experiment

This paper presents an experiment designed to measure the influence that a translator’s political stance may exert on the time needed to find a translation solution when working with ideologically loaded concepts. To this purpose, a reaction time experiment (with positive and negative prompting conditions) was designed to evaluate whether words and expressions that are contrary to the translator’s ideology may slow down the translation process, making translators take longer to find an adequate translation. Our hypothesis predicted that the reaction time of translators would be bigger when the English word was presented with a negative “prompt”, that is, with a word they would feel contrary to their political views. Differences in reaction times between two groups of translators with different ideological viewpoints would provide empirical support for the claim that translators may be influenced by their ideological views. The results will contribute to increase translators’ awareness of the impact that issues such as ideology and power may have on their work.

Are the dwellings of historic Mediterranean cities cold in winter? A field assessment on their indoor environment and energy performance

Although European heritage buildings are excluded from energy efficiency targets, it would be beneficial to include the largest group, that of listed housing, in energy retrofit plans, in order to encourage its occupation and contributing to the sustainable maintenance of historic cities. This requires reliable experimental studies, which have been rare so far, in order to establish energy rehabilitation plans that do not jeopardize the conservation of their values. This paper aims to contribute to addressing this gap. It evaluates the energy performance and indoor environmental quality of dwellings within listed buildings of the conservation area of Seville, Spain, in the Mediterranean climate zone, under actual winter use and occupation conditions. An experimental campaign was conducted, generating energy models and measuring rates of indoor air temperature to validate them. The findings highlight important health and environmental issues: despite the mild winters of southern Spain, intensive use of the heating system is needed to maintain thermal comfort indoors, increasing polluting emissions; CO2 concentration in bedrooms is usually excessive overnight and, regularly, indoor relative humidity remains too high; heat losses depend entirely on the physical condition of the constructive elements (walls, roofs, air leakage and glazing) which occupants cannot easily improve

Although the musical film can be considered as a typically American genre, many cinematographies from all over the world have dealt with this type of films. As a result, the features of the musical films from Hollywood have evolved and been reinterpreted. This article reflects on the contemporary Japanese musical film through the in-depth analysis of the aesthetic and narrative characteristics of three recent productions: The happiness of the Katakuris, Princess Raccoon and Memories of Matsuko. We will study the semantic and syntactic components of this genre, along with other aesthetic and discursive elements in order to understand the contemporary Japanese musical film and place it within the global context of that genre

The research is started by means of a normative review and a pilot study in the field where different interviews are carried out with indigenous women and semi-structured interviews with key agents linked to cooperation project and within the institutional process to the gender violence. Among the conclusions, it is identified how the prohibition of female mutilation has brought positive, but also negative, consequences, such as the increased risk to the health of minors who are still being practiced this mutilation

Analysis of the risk factors of gender-based violence and resilence strategies of women in Lamu, Kenya

According to the World Health Organization (2018), gender-based violence is a global phenomenon that affects more than a quarter of women around the world. Despite the promulgation of a multitude of regulations against gender-based violence, it is estimated that more than 40% of women who suffer violence do not report it (ONU, 1979, 2017; Unión Africana, 2005). This study aims to identify and encourage strategies to counter gender-based violence in Indigenous women od Lamu, Kenya. In this work, we adopt the social justice perspective developed by Young (1990) to ask how the gender-based violence legislative reforms of the last few years in Kenya have affected indigenous women, what resilience strategies they have developed, and whether these strategies could be integrated into institutional actions. To this end, a field study was developed in Lamu (Kenya), where we conducted in-depth interviews with indigenous women and key agents. We concluded by establishing a relationship between the lack of female participation and the barriers that still exist in gender-based violence administration that silence and revictimize indigenous women (Maqueda, 2008).
